New joint design... Decreased deflection?

I'll try to say it another way, just to be sure for myself and maybe for others who might want to understand this better.

Often when you hit the cue ball faster/harder/with more speed, it just looks like there is more squirt than when you hit the cue ball at a slower speed.

So the actual amount of squirt is not reduced when the cue ball is traveling at a slower speed but the swerve curves the cue ball in the opposite direction of the squirt, thereby making it appear that there is less squirt because the cue ball attempts to swerve earlier rather than later, when it slows down.

Exactly, this is another example of what happens "actually" vs the scientific approach, so from functional point of view this has to be taken into consideration when practicing long shots with increased speed, practically it's impossible to aim the same as in using slow speed.
That is why a "medium" speed stroke is advised in most cases, in order to "balance" deflection/squirt and swerve effects, thus obtaining a more regular aiming approach, still all this from practical point of view.

Definitely not. Neither a joint design nor a razor can affect squirt (AKA "cue ball deflection") ... unless the "joint" is from Colorado. :grin:

The only thing known to reduce squirt is reduced "end mass."

Everybody is always looking for the newest shaft/cue which doesn't deflect. That's a good thing keeping Predator and OB in business selling low deflection shafts. Hell they got me too and it did help a little. Pool is a guessing game on where to hit the ball. You may think you have good hand eye coordination but few possess that innate quality. Just like golf, if I get the latest and greatest club, then I'm going to break 75. Really? If you really think about it, it's all about the back hand and the muscle memory and the practice and learning to CONSISTENTLY hit the ball in the right spot. Why did players of yesteryear which we talk about here all the time play so well? They devoted themselves to the game. I don't think Efren, Buddy, Mike Sigel, Earl, and many others needed Low Deflection Shafts to play great pool.

Petros, you're right about the "medium stroke" and I know that some people teach that using the same amount of side spin on each shot is a way to help remember how the cue ball squirts and swerves on different length shots, except where more or less is absolutely needed.

Moving that cue tip across the horizontal axis in different positions on the cue ball is done at each player's peril. Until a player has "MASTERED" side spin (and the properties of the cue) , it is probably best to hit the cue ball in the same spot for side spin on all shots.

It must be tough to plan for a good break-out shot though; but I guess if you are high, it doesn't matter anyway. Maybe straight pool should be the new official pool game of Colorado.

Fortunately, all shaft/cues deflect. The cue ball will always squirt and swerve when side spin is applied. The happy medium is where the shaft/cue's squirt and swerve cancel one another out. That depends on a lot of things other than how much the shaft deflects off of the cue ball.

What if the "wiggle" took place in the ferrule or some point ahead of the bridge-hand?

"Wiggle in the ferrule" does reduce squirt. That's the Meucci de-coupled ferrule concept. The ferrule collapses during the tip/ball contact time which keep the endmass of the shaft partially de-coupled from the overall collision equation.

So, it's still about effective endmass during the tip/ball contact.

Wiggling ahead of the bridge hand but behind the ferrule doesn't reduce squirt, as far as the current best understood model of squirt reduction is concerned.

Squirt does not vary with speed if cue is leveled, like top right or left, shooting fast alters stroke at times, to prove it shoot left and right hand cut, you can see inconsistency with cb direction which provides some evedence.
 
No. In many shots, the joint would move to the inside or outside, depending on the amount of English used and probably stay on the cue ball longer than you want.

As much as it could work, in theory, it would also work against you more times than none, in theory also.

Besides, there are so many things that Cue Makers do think about and try, there ain't no maker thats going to mess with that anyway.

Yeah, I use the Gillette as I shave my head along with my face. The only thing that will do is now I have to buy one. An 8 pack of Gillette blades are over 40 bucks in Canada.

No Generics out yet. I wonder why.
 
So you can smoke it anywhere ? :rolleyes:
You'd want the opposite.
You want a solid joint so the front end can deflect more off the cueball.
Straightest shooting cues I've shot with have stiff forearm.

My fault. Nobody said we were talking about THAT kind of joint.;)
