As someone brand new to the forum.. and the world of pool in general, wondering if this is the right forum for me.
Have played the odd game, always wanted a table.. and now due to some renovations.. will soon have a 19x16 area to place a table.
Live in Central Alberta, Canada.. and have just started looking. Never expect to be a pro...
Came across a used Black Crown available locally for what seems like a decent price.
Any advice appreciated.. even if it is to direct me to a forum for newbies.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum!:) There's a few fellow Canadians on here as well. Hopefully some of them chime in here.

If you're just getting into the game, you're in the right place. The wealth of knowledge here will astound you. There's trolls and *****s here like there are everywhere but for the most part this forum is full of good people with a real passion for this game. Welcome aboard!

The Black Crown is made by Canada Billiards in Quebec
http://canadabillard.com/english/indexa.html

A commercial table, Le Spot in Toronto has some. More likely to be found in northern Ontario or in Quebec. Don't know how popular it is in the west.

Significantly less robustly constructed than Brunswick's Gold Crown, Diamond's Professional or ProAm, or Gabriels' Signature Pro, by about 300 lbs.

You might find used Brunswick, highly unlikely you will find the other three.

Sold with Simonis 860 cloth.
Don't know the source of cushions.
If you were having the table overhauled, get Artemis cushions installed (German - used on the Professional, ProAm and Signature Pro)

Some issues, the newest version improved.

The west is Dufferin country.
Look for a Dufferin Challenger or Titan.
They are comparable to the Brunswick Gold Crown.

..and welcome to the forum...this place is like a library...
..all the bad stuff is here....and all the good stuff also.

Welcome fellow westerner ! Al has a couple of Black Crowns at the Snooker Shack, I think they play a little better than the Dufferin Titans that make up most of his 9'ers. If you need a mechanic perhaps Jerry (Gerry ? Someone correct me please) from Pockets Billiards Supplies & Services in Calgary can help, he gave me a good price on cloth and rubber.

Dave <-- a few hundred km east

Black Crowns are great tables for the price. Is that table in Sylvan Lake by chance? I noticed a used one for sale there recently and it is the nicest table to come up for sale in Alberta in a while at that price range.

There was someone in one of the FB groups (Alberta Billiards and Calgary Pool Action bringing Diamond Tables up from the US a few months ago, but I don't recall whom it was.

The Diamond is definitely the best table, but you might find the pockets a little unforgiving if you're not a seriously competitive player. That doesn't make for a fun family game night, it's more of a players table compared to the Dufferin's. Because of the way they cut the facings on Dufferin's though, you might find it spits balls out fairly often.

You could ask around for some used commercial tables, there are a few poolhalls that have closed down. Also, if you can, grabbing a Gold Crown (Brunswick) from the US might be a great option. Definitely the best-looking table, they play great, and are a good investment.

I agree with you on Diamonds and Gold Crowns.
But although a Dufferin Titan plays too tight (and really unfairly tight),
that is easily remedied by a table mechanic.
And the Titan looks as good as any table, especially the ones with the
champagne colored rails that remind me of Lemachers.

you are right, for sure!! if your not accurate or hit a little hard with the corner pockets, those balls will not drop lol i play almost all my pool on dufferin titans,

here is another video of me shooting on a dufferin titan using cte/pro1.

I don't find the Titans play "tight", they just reject balls that hit the facings too much. It's the angle the cushions are cut at that causes it. The Black Crowns the OP was referring to don't do this, they are both wide at the mouth and cut more like a Diamond so they take balls easier. It's not a bad thing if what you're interested in is family fun without the seriousness of competition.

The Black Crown is never going to measure up to even the $10K base model Gold Crown V. That would be like pretending your Chevette is a Corvette. But that doesn't mean it's a terrible table either, you just get what you pay for.

Unless the OP gives more detail I'd lean more toward finding a used GC for a family table. They're nicer on the eyes to most people than a Diamond and are far more family friendly. For me personally, I'd rather have a Diamond, but then again I'm not interested in seeing Uncle Bob run out with a fist-bridge and a crooked stroke.

greenaw...Welcome to the forums! There is a wealth of information here, just waiting for you. You might post in the "ask a mechanic" forum for answers to your table questions. Otherwise, ask away and there are many here who will try and help you!

Clive Alberta. That must be somewhere in Cowboy country between Cowtown and that other city that wishes it was like Cowtown.
Oh, they do have a big mall there.

Welcome Cowboy and enjoy your stay. I am from 500 miles east of you.
