What's the spindle travel distance & what's the spindle nose thread? Basically, can it be equipped with a drill chuck & used as a drilling tailstock? If so, it's friggin the nuts & I want one. Very cool idea.

I am pretty sure that Lee is at the US Open. I am not sure if he has internet access there.

While at the open, I took a gander at the tailstock and it appears to travel 1.5"

Thank you much for giving your thoughts. Did you notice whether or not it had a threaded spindle nose? Again, I appreciate your post.

It didn't have a threaded spindle nose. It does seem to be a #0 Morse taper, so I imagine that it could be rigged most any way.

I'm still wondering if this 40" bed can be used as a turner for a cnc gantry to taper shafts and butts.

Joey if your wanting to do that could you get one of the taig dovetails get a taig head stock and tail stock and add a motor I have just about all the parts to make a fixed gantry for tapering. Its on hold till I get my primary cnc completed.

K, thnx.
.

Joey, I have tried using the long dovetail bed to make a taper machine, but the aluminim beds are too fragile & flexy, IMO. I'd like to find a hardened steel bed to fit taig type parts, though!!! That would be a bed. I wouldn't mind paying a good dime for it, either.

I bought some linear rails & bearings & rests. They are sturdy & super smooth. I think for a continuous back & forth operation like tapering would be cheese with these things. All I need now is a leadscrew. I'll be using taig parts for everything else.

Thank you Eric for the heads up

This may save me some headaches. I am having some linear rails installed on Lees 40" cue fixture he sells to be able to slide the fixture in my taig mill the lock it back in position with ease I figure I will use the same for my taper machine. I bought my lead screws on ebay they are 1/2"x10tpi acme they were ordered with brass nuts but I will be getting some anti backlash nuts. I am considering using 8020 extrusion for the frame construction.
Anyhow I am sold on linear bearing blocks and rail. Can be a bit pricey but you pay for what you get.

Yeah, my rails & bearings were $400. I need a feedscrew & the anti-backlash nuts sound nice but not sure i'd need them as mine won't be CNC. I probably should just make it CNC & save myself the future mod.

Thats about what paid for my fiest set I ran accross a auction for the 40" for my taig project and won the bid for $220 for a pair brand new in box both rails with 2 blocks each. I lucked in tot hat deal. you can get a lot of great ideas over at cnczone.com :) if you decide to cnc it
