New update-Denver poolrooms

This makes me laugh, because the sign on West 38th Avenue reads "Paradise Billiards" except that a couple of the letters have blown off and iit's more or less illegible. Over the back door, you're got an awning that says "Family Fun Center" -- one of the great euphemisms or all time. Families my arse.

Anyway, I guess Hank can't afford his own dang sign. But last time I was there, a 5x10 billiards table was under construction, so who knows. This is the pool hall with the history in Denver, and I'd hate like hell to lose it. The best players from both coasts cruised through here, and I was lucky enough to see them way back in the '60s.

The last time I was there I looked for anything that was 'history related"
like a bulletine board or a trophy case with info on days gone by. I did not see anything but I could feel the ghosts of the greats that had cruised that room at one time.

I have read your post for a few years now Paul and you have a great memory and a way of putting your thoughts into text:cool:.

I am sure there are a few old timers back in the corner that remember a few stories of that place back in the day and it would be cool to write a few of these down before they swept under the rug for good.

Cuebuddy,

You are stirring some memories...I remember (from my days, late 50's early 60's ) At the Fam. Fun Center, and Downtown. Such names as Red, Parking Lot Johnny, Watermellon, and Billy Stroud... Later on, it was Frank Burgess and Table Steaks...Lots of good times, and good action, especially at golf and one pocket...Lots of names I can't recall. Good times. Medina had not yet reached his prime...(probably lucky for me..;)

I'm sure you and Paul have better recall than I do, of those days.

As far as pool rooms names go, I really enjoyed the names of the pool rooms in Denver, very unique. Match up's, Table Stakes, really good names. I play at Bananas, what the hell, but the owners knickname was Bananas. Clicks is ok. Fast Eddies is sort of ok, if you are a pool player and knew who Fast Eddie was. Felt, I don't think it will be a problem if they have a good pool room. When I travel I look for kewl pool hall names, I would to to a place that is called Action billiards over a Felt place because I would be looking for action, to match up or play for table stakes.

How about naming the pool room "Antoinette"? ... as she is one of the pool room owners. :)

I'm hoping that they resume their Sunday 9-ball and 1 Pocket events sometime soon.
The question of the old tournament schedule was asked and the answer was "on hold for now".

I know Paul remembers names and stories of Denver's pool scene but I was not in the area until 1978. Those are some cool nick names that you gave us and yes the golf game has been going on in the back corner as long as I have been going to the FFC.
Some of the players on the golf table look to be well into their 80's and I am sure they must have some great tales if a guy could gain their trust enough to get them to talk.

I play at the Elks lodge on North Nevada

I've heard that they have some decent tables over there. At one time Chris Morgan offered to sponser me over there. Sounds like a nice place to get some inexpensive table time. I might have been introduced to you one time....you don't do cue work perchance?

A couple years ago I spent a bunch of mornings just watching the game, trying to strike up conversations, and reading he newspaper, the whole while with a cue case at my side. Alas, I was pretty much ignored. My questions about Andy Hudson were mostly met with blank stares. I rented tables several times and played solo, looking as much as possible like a guy who wanted some competition. Nothing doing.

I still drop by once in a while, but without any expectations. I think the room is surviving on bar business and night leagues. The corner golf game is a sliver of Denver pool history. Never seen Medina there, though I hear he pops up at Felts.

I'll be putting on a national Golden Tee tournament in August at a place call Jackson's right next to Coors Field. I know it is not a pool room but since this a thread with a whole bunch of Denver guys hanging out in, I thought I would ask your opinion of the place.

That's Jackson's Hole sports bar.
I've only eaten lunch there before day games and have never played there.
Definitely your classic sports bar, never heard anyone ever mention playing there, but I don't go to Lodo much anymore.

Ony a couple of blocks from the Wynkoop, Melissa Littles home pool hall.

Felt

Hi all, just wanted to hop in here. My name's Joseph, I'm the owner of Felt, located at 101 W Floyd in Englewood. Sorry some don't care for the name...we wanted something with a bit of an edge that of course referenced billiards. Our vibe is to have some attractive waitstaff so that sort of tied into the name.

I'm happy to answer any questions, and I welcome your feedback and suggestions.

A few tidbits:
- We're doing $6.00 "all you can play" pool from 10am to 4pm weekdays
- $2.00 drafts and well drinks from 10-4 weekdays
- Happy hour from 4pm to 6pm, with half-price appetizers, $6 pitchers, and $3 cuervo margaritas

We've got a full menu with amazing food, 10 beers on tap, and nightly drink specials. 10 large tables, 8 bar tables, one billiards, and one snooker table.

We'll be doing a Sunday tournament starting probably May 29th. Thursday tournament is in the works as well. We're working out details, but they'll be handicapped and will have money added. We'll also be starting league nights very soon.

Right now we're just getting rolling, getting some feedback and getting our feet wet. Things will get kicked up a few notches in the coming weeks. We appreciate everyone's business and feedback, and look forward to seeing you soon!

I'm encouraged. I'll be there soon. And greens for you.

Hey get Chisolm to play. If you play Golden Tee nationally, you probably know him.

What kind of leagues? I stop by every now and again hoping to see some one pocket, but haven't seen it yet.

Good luck, I hope you build it back up as it's the closest place to me with 9' tables.

Also, Greenfields is a nice place if you like bar tables, I go there Wednesdays when I can as it's 5 mins from where i live.

I think it would really be a shame to have ONLY handicapped tournaments on the 9 footers. Sure you want to level out the playing field and make it fun for everybody, but the best should always win.

Good thought. But handicapped tournaments might bring out a bigger field. And that's what this place needs to get going. I played in some of the old tournaments and it was no fun beating up on a "b" player. But when I got to play Bill Skinner-Rick Fields-Nicole Keeney-Jackie Carol- Richie Cunningham it got intense. So maybe both formats on different days.

I agree that both formats is a good idea. "Handis" are always great for getting otherwise homebodys to get out and play. However, there still needs to be a completely open tournament. Once a week is nice, but even a seasonal thing done 4 times a year without a handicap. I wanna win.......................and I wanna lose on a level playing field.
