Nick Varner won the NC Senior 9 Ball Tournament at Babineau's Billiards this past weekend. After the Tournament he mentioned that he had just completed the deal to represent the USA as Mosconi Cup Captain. I haven't seen this posted so I thought I might leak it out. Nick Varner is a class act and ambassador of all that it good about pool. I heard it first hand from an 8 time World Champion and living Hall of Famer. He deserves this honor as much as any American alive.

Kentucky Boy

Nick's hails from Owensboro, KY and he's a fantastic representative for our sport. I know his Dad would have been very proud to here this news. Looks like his brother Steve will get to go, I know he's happy.

Good for Nick. That's a pick I agree with. Two of this years picks I don't. Johnnyt

I love Nick-Always root for him though i dont always watch. Im happy with this pick and here it comes BUT Could he please stop with the gum chewing during the event? It just doesnt look good or highly professional.

PS-I dont think this will be most rep garnering post._

A great choice. Nick is a fine representative of American pool.

Great news! Nick Varner has so much fight in him, and all the heart in the world. One of the nicest men you'll ever find off the table. One of the fiercest competitors ever on the table. Wonderful selection!

And while we're waxing eloquent with all these glowing accolades on Nick, let me also say that to this day he is the ONLY player in history to win world championships in all 5 of the major pocket billiards disciplines. He has won the World 14.1 Championship twice, the World 9 Ball Championship 3 times, the World 8 Ball Championship twice, the World One Pocket Championship and the World Bank Pool Championship. And something else very special is on Nick's impressive credentials...he's the only player to ever win the U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship back to back (1989-1990).

Nick is sometimes overlooked among the all-around champions, but IMO he deserves to be mentioned right up there with Reyes, Sigel, Lassiter, and Worst as one of the greatest all-around players ever.

He was also the ACUI collegiate champion twice at Purdue.

Awesome pick for captain! Nick Varner is a class act and defines the word "heart." He was the player I always tryed to pattern my game after as I was coming up as a young player.

Good Luck Nick! Bring home a title for U.S.A.

It's always been a toss up between him and Johnny for me. I'm glad that Nick is in there, a nicer guy couldn't have gotten it.

A real nice guy, heart of a champion, plays like a champion. That's what I'm talking about! Someone that deserves to be there-

Is it going to a playing or non-playing Captain position this time? I remember chatting briefly with Mr. Varner at the 2003 Mosconi in Vegas when he was non-playing Captain. IIRC at the time he said this was a lot stress just organizing the rest of the team and was relieved he didn't have to play too. He was very personable to talk to and very understated about his own exceptional talents.

Congrats to Nick. I can't think of a more deserving fit to captain this year's team. Nick is a great player, great person and great competitor. I am glad that he is getting the opportunity to lead our team.

Go USA.

I know the Varners well. Steve will be very happy and after reading this I feel bad I did not answer when he called yesterday as I'm sure it was to give me the news, however, he likes to talk for about 2 hours per phone call.

I'm wondering the same thing. I remember when he was the non-playing Captain.
