Nitty or not?

The guys got back problems and unscrewed to walk out the door, not to play on a different table.

As Bill Hicks said you got a pair so big you got to carry them in a wheelbarrow Ray to say he's a nit. And who's to say that he will ever see this guy again to say when I see you again we will start off up 20 the way pool players exaggerate stories it would be 100 and be on a bar table instead of 20 on a 9ft.

If he took the $20 he's a nit. If he said, " we'll play again sometime and I'll start off up $20" His excuse was valid.

My guess is he thought he was stealing and had no money. When it became apparent he was in a tougher game than he thought, he made up a quick excuse and bailed.

should have been a hint playing by the game . . .

I'm of the school you have no whine coming when he quit you when y'all were playing by the game. Every time a game is over the "contract" is complete. A real nit would have quit you with no warning, but I agree more warning would have been nice. I also note that you knew going in that you had no intention of losing more than a hundred however I don't read that you mentioned this to him. Nothing wrong with that, just pointing out that neither of you felt the need to say more than let's play a few for ten a game.

People with bad backs don't know what the next five minutes are going to be like. Most nits make an excuse to quit and then do something else at the pool hall if they don't like the game. The fact that he left the hall after only 45 minutes there is a strong indication that he really did have a problem.

I'd give him the benefit of any doubt for now. Notice if this is common for him or was an unusual event. Seems like he struck you as a good guy until he bailed on you unexpectedly. If this is common for him and you still want to play him lock up at least half of the most you are willing to play for before you hit a ball if it is just a hundred or so.

Excuse

The back thing was just an excuse to quit. Who's back hasn't hurt after playing so long. Besides you did not play that many games. He just saw that you were a better player than what he wanted you to be.

He may not be an actual nit, but he was scared of getting beat.

i dont think he was a nit for several reasons.

1. if he had quit when he was up by 3 , he might be.

2. if he had quit when he was up by 1, over 10.00 ? doubt it.

3. he gave you notice his back was starting to hurt but was willing to play 1 more giving you a chance to break even . you had just run a 2 pack on him and was likely to win the third. if his back was hurting he was being a gentleman giving you a chance to break even imo.

some of you posters got me to laughing.

some of you called him a nit and brought up instances of matches you have been in where your opponent pulled up without warning. THIS GUY DID NOT DO THAT.

some of you called him a nit for taking the 20.00. who in their right mind is going to play an agreed upon game ,walk out a winner giving a loser their money back ? NOBODY !

Well, seems nitty to me. If he was really in so much pain he would have done just what you said, unscrewed to walk out the door. Instead he pulled the double or nothing proposition and got it. Then left.

Like many eluded to, it wasn't a big amount and it was basically just for fun. Obviously Woof felt something was wrong with the deal enough to post it up for our amusement.

Either way, I believe this thread is good discussion for pool players. It gives some good insight into pool and action etiquette and how many different people look at it.

I think some pool players somewhere will have a more enjoyable time matching up because of this thread and the many very good posts here on both sides of this topic.

I get something in my back sometimes and it aint gradual. When it comes, it tightens up and hurts real bad real fast. Its only happened one time but I dont see how anyone can play with back problems. If that guys is anything like what happened to me he did you a favor even playing one more.

If he's lying hes a roach

Hey I remember that time when ur back when out. That was a joke! You gonna be back at all over the holidays? bring your table if u r.

You know a lot about it for someone who knows little about it...

I have a herniated disk being able to play comes and go's,sometimes I can play for hours other times a few racks I never know what my back will let me do. I have had to drop out of tournaments, some when I'm deep in the winners bracket!!!
FT: herniated disk spine for young heathly spine PM if interested

I have not read all the replies to see hat everyone else said, but I think it is kind of nitty to quit when you are up no matter what. If the guys back was really hurting, maybe he could have quit, and he is up one game next time you play. Of course that might not have worked, because he might have just been trying to get out of the game.

When there are threads like this, some usually say you can quit whenever you want, and compare it to poker or the casino. Not the same thing. Lets see how someone would like it, if the casino decide to quit on you after one hand of blackjack. Also, if someone hits and runs in poker, they are usually considered a nit also.

Its not like you can't quit when you are up, but it is just common courtesy not to,if possible. The best thing you can do is keep your 'customers', and you will run out of action if it gets around that you often quit when you are ahead.

Well said, ross. Tap...tap...tap.

You got action--be happy. Ask him next time to play same as before. His answer will tell you everything you need to know. Consider it a compliment if he doesnt want to play you anymore. If he does the same move with you another time thats just the type of player he is. Just sounds like the type of player you can win a bet or two, probably nothing more. Its still gambling, you just have to get ahead because that person will never loose money once they get up on you.

No! ask him to jack the bet and play races. His answer to that will tell you all you need to know. This was just a 20 dollar lesson in setting a few ground rules before we start. I really dont think it was about the 20 bucks. It was the principal of the matter. I read from a few people that a person can quit anytime he feels like it up or down, and technically thats true, but it doesnt make it right. Many are just shortstoppers anyway. Just nickle and dime players trying to scape up a few bugs from some unsespecting locals. If he did have a sudden back flare up, he could have said hey cover the table time and we will do this again when I see you around. I know thats expecting way too much these days, but I guess im just hard headed. Just my humble opinion.

6 pages about a guy who's fired up over losing $20. Really, if $20 bothers you that much, STOP GAMBLING. There's no whining, crying, or filling sorry for yourself in gambling or pool. Grow a pair, man up, and learn how to gamble. People are going to quite winners, that's just part of it. If it bothers you that much, I don't know brother, go back to the APA I guess.

10 a game is a friendly wager. He was up one and gave you the chance to break even, after you b&r 2 on him. He did nothing wrong.
