No USA Players at 2009 World Games

It is pretty fuggin ridiculous that the entire COUNTRY isn't represented because of TWO people not being able to commit for whatever reason, of course there are other factors at play but at least send SOMEONE.

Either way, we have 5 more years to think about how to send someone to this event and I hope history doesn't repeat itself. Hell I think I could get backing for that trip and I play like poo.

On a side note: Corey did you get my email? I sent it and got an auto-reply that you were out of the office, just making sure you received what you needed from me.

Since the grapevine  hasn't exactly been a reliable source of information on this so far I'm intrigued enough to be prompted to ask which "European Associations" will get hundreds of thousands if their player wins and who will they get it from?

The German Pocket Billiards Federation , not sure exactly their title. That was what has been passed onto the German pros such as Ralf Souquet. Doesnt mean the players will get the money, but the association will if the players gold medal.

I dont think any of the male players did get an invite, I think they would have found sponsors for somthing like this I know I would have.
Its events like this that might put pool back on the map so yes this is a disaster if the ball was dropped even more so now if there are no World Pool Championships.

Yup, got your email. Thanks!

Agreed, I would have gone. Looks like Tony would have gone. Neil as well.

Some of us take pride in the sport and competition. Not just about the $$$. And like I was pointing out before, it's an investment anyway - just longer term than normal.

Travesty. Again, and again, and again!

The European Pocket billiards Federation (EPBF) is the body responsible for pool in Europe and affiliated to the WPA.

Who is going to give the EPBF hundreds of thousands (dollars/euros/whatever?) if "one of their players wins a gold medal"? It certainly won't be coming from the organisers of The World Games. Do you perhaps mean that because the Govt of the European country which the winning player comes from will be so pleased and proud that one of their players has won that the EPBF willl in the future get hundreds of thousands in funding from that Govt?

........What does "if the players gold medal " even mean when it boils down to it? There are several individual and team events in different disciplines and they all involve gold medals. Does the EPBF get hundreds of thousands if any one of the many different European countries players players wins any one of the gold medals in those several events?

Sorry Poolgrapevine but this smacks of widely exaggerated or distorted bar stool nonsense, just like most of the rest of your first post has unfortunately already proved to be (perhaps through no fault of yours).

When exactly are the World Games? Is it too late now to get someone there? If anyone has the answers to these questions please let me know, thanks,

Again, I'm not really sure where everyone is getting this information. At the beginning of this thread it was "No USA Players" at the World Games. Then the WPBA assured you that there are female players going. So now it's "No Male Players"...ALL of this information is not true so no one needs to be so upset about it.

I spoke to Shane to see if he was going to this and he said that he IS invited and would like to go but that he will probably need to find sponsors for it. But he HAS NOT told them no yet. Part of why he has been waiting to give them a definite answer is because the World 8-Ball that was scheduled in Dubai in April is supposed to be postponed until later in the year so he wants to make sure they will not be on conflicting dates.

I am pretty sure that the list of players had to be turned in already. Maybe Shane is thinking about another event.

Hi Cris. At the outset will make it clear I'm not involved in organising the World 8 Ball which was due to be held as usual in Fujairah which is actually an adjacent emirate to Dubai within the same country (UAE) but you are certainly correct in saying that it is already "postponed".

However I do live/work in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and unfortunately as relevant background information I can confirm that Dubai is having severe problems due to the global credit crunch crisis. Massive multi billion dollar construction projects are being cancelled/postponed right, left and centre. Several thousand expatriate professional engineers etc have lost their jobs in the last few months (including at least 'hundreds' of USA nationals) and every week brings more bad news on that front. Abu Dhabi is actually a hugely richer emirate than Dubai but they too are also suffering badly, albeit to a lesser degreee.

Even the prestigious European PGA Tour which normally has sponsors coming out of their ears have for the first time ever had to cancel one of their events (originally scheduled to be held in India this coming weekend) because the Dubai sponsors and others could not fulfil their planned input.

Whilst again making it absolutely clear that I have nothing whatsoever to do with any of the organisation of pool events here I would have to say as a fairly alert commercially experienced person in this region that realistically the chances of pool finding a sponsor here willing to inject sizeable cash sums into any type of world competition in this current climate are probably about as remote as me running 10 consecutive racks.
Companies which are not already bleeding profusely are certainly booked for the intensive care unit later.

The usual organisers of the World 8 Ball are admirable and the nicest most upstanding people you could wish to meet and nobody could be more honest than they are, but frankly if they can pull off the task of finding a sponsor this year in the current business environment it would be one of the achievements of the decade.

So whatever other definitely scheduled events Shane may be swithering over later in the year in my opinion he might be well advised to make sure that in the meantime he doesn't lose the option of taking part in them solely over any expectations of a big money event out here, unless and until someone from the UAE organisers says it is definitely being rearranged.

Being held July 16-26 at Kaohsiung Taiwan.

Don't know the other answer.

We are trying to find out if there are still spots open. The names were supposed to be given to the organizers months ago.
