Nomination vs Submission - BCA Hall of Fame

Just I guess for informational purposes...

Through some discussion, my SO had a potential client last year that claimed that he (the client) was "Pulitzer Nominated" for 2016. Now, this carries quite some significance to many people, and of course as a writer, it means an awful lot. However, I'm skeptical when someone claims they are "Pullitzer Nominated," so I did a quick check.

The reality is, like many awards of this type, the Pulitizer nominations aren't disclosed until the Pulitzer itself is disclosed as I understand the process. It's pretty prestigious just being named as a nominee. However, this particular person was claiming to be nominated many months before the nominees and winners were announced.

He wasn't nominated; somebody "submitted" his name. Folks, that's a whole different thing, and to portray and present yourself as a Pullitzer-nominated author based on someone submitting your name is deceitful.

Okay, to make this pool related, I have now heard of three names in the pool industry that were "nominated" for the BCA Hall of Fame, names that never even cross the ballots. I assume someone out there is making a case to submit their names to the Hall of Fame committee, but that's a whole lot different than actually being nominated.

The Hall of Fame committee gets together in the summer or so to hash out eligible players for Greatest Players. Just like other sports, there are requirements to even be considered (years of professional play, minimum age, significant accomplishments, etc.).

The HoF also does Veterans Category and Meritorious Service every other year. Those categories are nominated by committee members at the same time (summer or so). So you wouldn't know who's "nominated" until that time. For sure, those nominees that didn't win have a high chance of being nominated again in later years down the road.

I guess there's a message here as well as some information. Take it as you will.

There are a lot of threads about "Joe should really be in the HOF -- it's a crime he's not," but those posters seem never to follow through and make a solid, documented case about why Joe belongs.

If anyone has a "Joe" in mind, they might consider actually doing something this year. From the USBMA website:

To be eligible for consideration in the Greatest Players category, a player a) must be 40 years old by Jan. 1 of the year of their induction; b) must have a professional playing career of at least 10 years; and c) must have recorded significant achievements in U.S.-based events.

So........I guess I'm out

Thanks, Bob. That should have been part of my message, but I wasn't very explicit.

By all means, if people think someone is worthy of consideration for Greatest Player category, Veterans Category, or Meritorious, then submit their name with whatever good backup they've got.

For Veterans Player, the list Bob Jewett shared is pretty much the same except the players has to have reached 60. Danny D and Jose' got in through Veterans. I think they should have gotten in earlier, but they didn't. Fortunately, the Veterans category exists to help cases like these two. Kim Davenport for example would be a nice submission and nominee as he's now in his 60's.

For Meritorious Service, there is no age criteria, but the candidate should have a listing of significant contribution to be pool and billiard industry. Consider all the greats that are in for Meritorious: John Wesley Hyatt, Rudolph Wanderone, George Balabushka, Robert Byrne, Mike Massey, etc.

Submissions can be given to any of the USBMA members.

Keith McCready. No matter what tournament he competes in, he draws the largest crowd. His charisma and charm coupled with his shooting style is attractive. Even the pros come to watch Keith play and surround his table because they know he's not only a strong player, but he's entertaining.

Even today, he gets asked about his famous line, "It's like a nightmare, isn't it?" in "The Color of Money" movie. It wasn't just this cameo role, however, that is memorable; it's the fact that the boorish hustler in that movie was Keith at one time in his life.

When he joined Facebook, he accumulated 5,000 friends within 2 weeks from around the world. He's not just known in the United States, but his persona is a favorite to many who have seen him on the few videos that exist of him playing pool.

He's won several major events in his lifetime, but that is not where he shines the brightest. I think his contribution to pool is his colorful personality and no-fear attitude when it comes to competition. He's played Willie, Fats, and all the greats. And what happened in those match-ups are the things books are written about. He truly loves pool and its fans. Just recently, he wanted to thin out his T-shirt stock of small sizes and sent them free of charge to youngsters and smaller-build people who contacted him on FB. He paid the shipping and did it because he wanted to spread a little pool joy to others.

Make no mistake about it, he's one of pool's funniest and popular players, even today in the autumn of his life. Keith will be 60 years old in 7 days, April 9th.

Speaking of the Hall of Fame...I have a question...

I routinely see people complain about who they feel should be in the hall of fame but aren't...as well as complain that the Hall of Fame is joke, rigged, etc., etc. blah, blah, blah.

So...having said that, I have a dumb question...maybe two.

How many players are/can be inducted into the Hall of Fame each year?

I'm guessing one male player, one female player and one person who has had a great impact on the industry. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

If there is in fact a sort of annual limit, I would be curious to hear from those who think that certain players who aren't in the HOF and should be, who they think that player should have been voted in over?

You know, since "there can be only one"...maybe.

Similar to the Hall of Fame in Major League Baseball, any nominee that is named on over 75% of the ballots gets in. So once in a while, more than one get it. There are no men/women divisions.

For Meritorious and Veterans Category, they alternate every year, and only one gets in.
