Noobie Help?

Question: I have soooooo many questions and the search function on this website is like my ski website.......sorely lacking. I frequent http://www.epicski.comand was instrumental in creating a beginner section where all of this information was gathered for the noob who didn't know all the lingo and had basic questions.

Is there a beginner section where I can find out things like:

acronyms......help! (you all know them, I have to guess)
cue care and repair
how does a tournament work?
what do you look for when buying equipment (cues, tables)
cloth types (what is Simonis?)

...ad nauseum

I have books and I've read a lot of stuff, but you can only get so much from a book. Doing a search on 'Simonis' here gets the name mentioned and I still have no idea what it is compared to anything else. I don't know what I'm playing on most of the time and it would be nice to have a name for the different types of cloth I've encountered instead of calling it 'that rough green felt' or 'smooth and fast and looks like silk'.

I don't want to start a bunch of threads on the same old stuff, but it's not easy to catch up.

Whine off.:help:

Which acronyms?
cue care and repair
Hunt around the forums. Anything in particular you need to know?
how does a tournament work?
Most tournaments are double elimination
what do you look for when buying equipment (cues, tables)
Again, hunt in the AzB forums.
cloth types (what is Simonis?)
Simonis is the most popular brand of cloth on the market.

...ad nauseum

Hope that gets you started.

Just ask in the thread you have questions about and someone will explain. A lot of this can be confusing to beginners. But most of the folks on this board are nice people and don't mind elaborating.

There are no silly questions

Start a new thread whenever you have the need, yes your gonna ask the same questions I and hundreds of others have, and yes.....your gonna get the occasional testosterone laden member whose sole response is " Do A Search " but mostly what you'll get is clear and consise info from knowledgeable sources. Yup.....sometimes it is conflicting advice and opinions vary. You will sometimes be forced to select what you may consider the lesser of two evils.......but you will have the ability to make an informed choice.......Dan

Buy all the books you can find, as well dvds. Practice all the basics you find in the information you purchase; grip, stance, bridge, stroke, aim, etc., and if something has you stumped, get on AZ and ask. This place has the biggest bunch of know-it-alls you've ever seen, and I mean that in a good way. Oh yea, and learn One Pocket as soon as possible. You'll thank me later.

I will be glad to help you, when you make it clean what you need help with what is NOOBIE, is this a growth your having trouble with or are you talking about some kind of tire?

I have no clue what a NOOBIE is?

a newbie (aka-newb, noob or noobie) is someone who is new to a web forum or (in the old days) usenet news group.

Manwon, this is just the kind of thing that I get to scratching my lil head about. I know what a noob is, but you didn't, and you guys all know what double elimination is, and I didn't. Until Double D explained it, I didn't have a clue. Just telling me that 'tournaments are double elimination' doesn't really tell me anything (no offense, TimKrazyMon) because I've never been in a sport that has that concept.

Thanks for all the answers. I'm just going to start asking questions and try to keep them in this thread.

So......Simonis is a really smooth worsted wool cloth, and very fast, I assume. Are there varying kinds of Simonis? Or just 'This is Simonis, and that other stuff that's shiny and smooth is called BLANK'. I've seen really fuzzy, pilly, smooth, really smooth, and Glasslike.

Another question I have is on kinds of games. A local bar here that has weekly tournaments has a Tuesday night 'Torture' tournament. What is that?

glossary

Here is a glossary of both proper and slang pool terms which is pretty
close to complete . Of course there is always localized jargon that you pick up in any pool room.

http://billiards.colostate.edu/resources/glossary.pdf

To reiterate what others have said, don't be shy about starting a thread about a question that has been asked and answered before. We all , on the forum like to blab. Check out the Forums index of forums too. They're
pretty diverse.

Why in the world , if you ski, would you want to start playing pool?

Have patience with yourself . It is more involved than it looks and takes time and practice to learn. :welcome:

Well, I love to ski, but it's really tough to ski when it's 95 outside and the crickets are chirping. Ski season is pretty short where I've been living lately unless you skin up and hike for your turns (although, now that I'm here, Mt. Hood is not that far a drive, hmmmmmm).

I'm not a fan of hot summer weather at all, so being in a cool pool hall/bar sounds fantastic to me. I love the precision of pool and how the game changes if the ball moves even a fraction of an inch. What's not to love?

Thanks for the link to the glossary! I will read tonight and hopefully my old pea brain will assimilate some terms.

Yes there are varying kinds of Simonis, there is 760 & 860, both very fast.

As for "torture", you might want to as someone at the bar.

A valuable tip

When you do a search, first click on "advanced". More filters will be offered and your results will better suit your wants.

Is that your cat in your avatar? Does he always let his appetizers take a stroll before chow time?

Welcome to the forum!

I never advanced beyond intermediate so I can't imagine hiking up a mountain to ski down it. Give me corduroy and six man hi-speed lifts.
I have no warm feelings for powder, bumps, or trees. But what I do
I love more than anything.:woot:

I do believe the girl has the fever...

Enjoy your time here at AZB. It's a great destination for all of us pool addicts.

As one who is in favor of doing searches.. I don't usually do a search here on AZ. Too much to sift through.

However.. a clear question on google (or your search engine of choice) can usually narrow down things fairly quickly. The key to this is in the question.

Example: Simonis will get you anything and everything that has the word simonis in it.
However, if you do, types of pool table cloth, you get things like This.
If you're wanting info on different types of cloth, do something like 'Billiard cloth reviews' or 'pool cloth reviews' and you can come up with something like this.

Now.. this is not to dissuade you from asking questions. By all means, ask. There are plenty of us here that will be happy to pass on info, or supply ways to get the info you're looking for.
As you read some posts, I think you'll find that is fairly common.

Welcome and enjoy.. and you don't have to learn it all right now. We'll give you a least a week :) maybe more.

Sonny Bono was a big fan of skiing.

Is there a beginner section
My website has an introductory tutorial I've catered to beginners. Here it is:

where I can find out things like:

acronyms......help!
My online glossary (32 pages) has most pool terms and phrases known to man. Here it is:

cue care and repair
how does a tournament work?
what do you look for when buying equipment (cues, tables)
cloth types
I have answers to FAQs on almost all pool topics here:

Check it out.

I shot my first game of One Pocket tonight.

I can't bank or kick. I found that out. If I played this all the time, I would get GOOD. I'll try to add at least 3 games of this each session.
