I got an alert from Norton anti-virus today ref AZB. It said "Drive-by Download" alert. Anyone know what this is or means?

Here is the definition it gave...no further names, etc given.

Drive-by Downloads
A drive-by download is computer code that takes advantage of a software bug in a Web browser to make it do something that the attacker wants—such as run malicious code, crash the browser, or read data from the computer. Software bugs that are open to browser attacks are also known as vulnerabilities.

Norton is more of a virus than the viruses these days. I only recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, supported and updated by Microsoft.

I think it's a false alarm. Norton's got some issues and is overall not a great AV product. MSE isn't either unfortunately, but it at least it doesn't hassle you with false alarms and is fairly quiet. Not pool related but if anyone wants to get the scoop on which AV programs really do the job, they should check out this site:

http://www.av-comparatives.org/

It does independent testing on several products. Some of these offer free versions that are better than many paid AV programs. I like Avira personally.

That's what I was thinking......I struggled with Norton for a while before
They gave up on me.....cleaned them out of my PC at least 5 times.

Joe,

Despite the amazing security analysis that others have provided, I took a little bit of time and looked at the issue already and it's a real threat. It's not a virus related issue, but a drive-by attack. Such an attack would either try to run a malicoius script which would attempt to do one of several things (modify a Web page, hijack your browser, drop some malware on your computer). I'd do a full analysis on it, but it appears it's not worth it as others have already reported the issue and it hasn't been fixed.

Considering the issue has been persistent here for a long time, seems like it's not going to get fixed anytime soon. If you want to increase your level of browser security, you may want to download the Firefox browser (if you haven't already) and download an add-on called NoScript which blocks scripts from automatically running (requires your express permission). It's a pain at first, but it's safer. Besides, there are plenty of other Web sites out there that have far worse issues where it would help. If you don't like Firefox, Google's Chrome with the NoScripts add-on is similar.

What a pain, right?

I've avoided Norton since Windows 3.1. Every time I've tried something from Norton it's been a minor to major disaster.

Hi Joe. This is addressed in a recent thread that JAM started. For the moment it is nothing to worry about (if you read JAM's thread).

Stick with your Norton anti-virus (you should have Norton 360 btw). Most of these posters who like to shoot down Norton do not know what they are talking about and are at best computer illiterates. I have used all of the top anti-virus products. Norton is ranked #1 most of the time.

Computer illiterate here.....
I just don't like their aggressive selling technique.....
...like having a door-to-door salesman stick his foot in the door when
you're trying to close it......
..I don't care what he's selling.

Norton kept burying itself deeper into my system....
..like an un-wanted relative you can't get rid of as a house guest.
...maybe they should call themselves 'aunty-viris'

Avast free AV is the best I have used for a while. it works great! I use it on all of my computers. Free at Download.com. I work on computers, and use a lot of different computers all the time. Malware Bytes is good for malware.
