Not Pool, But Super Important

Small children and pools - a bad combination. I continually get on people about pool covers or fences.

Great Story! They're a lot better when they have a happy ending.

I had two children, and could lose tract of them, in an instant. You need a hundred eyes to watch one child.

I am glad it turned out good for you! That was always my biggest fear while my children were growing up. I have always thought one of the biggest favors you could ever do for your child was to teach them to swim.

more true words have NEVER BEEN SPOKEN!

I started teaching my daughter to swim as soon as she could get wet. We are around pools and water quite frequently, and while watching them closely is ok to a point, it's that one second that you turn your back, take a quick phone call, or tend to another child that the bad stuff happens. I figure if she knows HOW to swim she's that much safer, even if an "accident" should happen.

He is a little miracle

Dan -

I remember you telling me this story and it is amazing and miraculous for sure.

I'm so glad that everything turned out great. Your family is beautiful.

You and Tish look pretty good on camera! See you next week.

Glad to hear that everything turned out ok in the end. When I was looking at buying a house 4 years ago I looked at a few with pools at the time my son was 2 years old, This was my main concern with getting a house with a pool. So we decided on a house with out one.

You can teach them to be pool safe at a very young age, maybe two years old. Pool safe means they know how to swim to the edge of a pool in case they fall in. I've seen too many tragedies in my life already. The parents never get over it and frequently it leads to divorce.

I'm very happy for your good fortune. My heart goes out to you. I'm also impressed with your concern for others.:angel2:

Younger than that, Jay.

They start with kids 6 months old....We brought the Granddaughter to class a little after she turned 1 yr old.

Thsy start teaching them to roll over on their back, then breathe. It's quite natural for them. Don't get me wrong, they kick, and scream, and holler for the first few lessons, but recover.

It's amazing...she literally never choked on water throughout the lessons. It's time comsuming....a lesson is a total of 10 minutes, daily. 5 days a week.

The instructors are finely tuned...they monitor breathing, so that the child never sucks in any water. They submerse them in between screams, and all the holllering.

It's one of my best moves...she's now 9, and a fish. She snorkels in Mexico in the ocean, and has been for a few years. She will be scuba dving next year along side us.

I have a friend that lost his 5 yr old boy due to drowning. It's a heartbreaker for sure....you'll never get over it. DON'T take the chance....

Here is the organization's website that does the 'Infant Swim' classes....they have classes all over the country.

Life jackets aren't the best thing for kids....gives them a false sense of security in the water. If something fails, and the air comes out.....big trouble.

Parents also feel a little safer when their kids wear them...but shouldn't. That alone is enough to make you not pay quite the same amount of attention you normally would.

And I have read about kids that jumped right into the water, forgetting they didn't have their vest-jacket on.

So glad you got lucky.....
