Not seeing the shots correctly??

Some days I can walk up to the table and pin point the exact spot on the ball I need to hit, and other days I just know what side of the ball to hit. What do you guys do to see the shots better?

Develop a sound, complete pre-shot routine. What do you include in your current routine?

Welcome to the gang! I have never figured out how to fix this. If I watch videos or streams I almost always see the correct ways to run out. One thing that kinda works for me is to step back from the table to get a further view. Taking a little more time to analyze the problems sometimes helps also. I play fast and has seemed to work fine for the first 30 years but now......not so much.

Current routine is walking over to the shot in question and trying to see the shot in my head, then I walk back over to the cb without trying to take my eye off the object ball, chalk, pre-stroke and shoot.

How long have you been playing and what's the most balls you've ever made in a row?

Almost 2 years, ran 40 balls in straight pool once and If I'm seeing the table right I can sometimes run out in 8 ball.

Actually sometimes I'm like that too. So I stopped playing for about 9 years and just came back to playing pool, then I realized sometimes I'm doing great and sometimes I can't see the shot. It turns out my stroke had deteriorated so bad that I wasn't shooting straight. So back to fundamentals for me. Once my fundamentals were ok, my shots all started going in. And when I say fundamentals it can mean how you stand, which muscles you're using to stroke the cue, and even having the cue lined up with the correct portion of your head. I also realized that on most shots when I lined up the shot under my left eye (I'm cross dominant, meaning right handed but left eye dominant) I could "see" the shot, but somehow or rather when it's a thin cut to the left, anything quarter ball or lesser, I had to line it up with the middle of my chin. I've no idea why but it works that way for me. Hopefully this helps. My 2 cents.

Cheers,

full ball - 3/4 ball - 1/2 ball - 1/4 ball etc most shots are this anyway and it's a simple method to get your sighting back on track.

I think everybody experiences this at one time or another.

My eyes have gone wacky over the years and I only play once a week, so my eyes may not be "tuned" when I get a chance to play. I have a couple shots that I set up exactly the same way when I first get to the table and I "tune" my stance, angle of view, height of eyes over cue, bridge and stroke length before I ever play the first game.

From playing so many years, I know when I am pretty close to what I play my best at. I fine tune it from there when I start playing.

Wow. I'm at almost 3 years of playing and starting to believe that I'm going to perpetually be going through down cycles, so to hear that you fight it sometimes is, I guess, kinda affirming. But then again, what you say terrifies me. I guess I'm still clinging to a Pollyanna ish belief that "it" can be owned and mastered.

I was at my best through the summer and thought I'd broken through to the next level but am now having a real crisis of confidence. Care to share details of your initials synching routine? What you do and what you're thinking, assessing, refining as you tune in/up. Knowing how much you've shot, I'd think for you it's as easy as flicking on the switch.

Last night in league I felt confident and loose in warmup and was sharp the first four racks. Then "lost" that edge the next 3. Still confident and positive but a couple of ez peasies didn't go down. And almost got back to that initial state to win at the end. Reflecting this morning I'm ok with what happened. And thinking its 6 more days until the next test. But that middle period of losing it is.... well you know (enough of the negative thoughts).

(After everyone left and the millennials started showing up I stayed to play solo 14.1 and was significantly better than normal. Positive thoughts)

Backsliding keeps me vigilant and I always say to myself that I wouldn't like this game in so much if it were easy. But my learning techniques need to evolve to go further. And I'm now probing the minds of all the players I encounter to hear how they cope and see what I can steal/incorporate.

lol, welcome to Dante's First Ring of Hell.

Over my pool playing career, this is something I've always battle with. Somedays I get down on a shot and can see in my mind's eye exactly how the shot will unfold and can play the OB to different sides of the pocket and lay the CB down with considerable precision. Other days I struggle to get the OB in the general vicinity of the hole and am happy to position the CB "somewhere over there."

The trick, of course, is as others have mentioned: to become absolutely precise and consistent in you PSR from the moment you leave the chair and approach the table. There are some naturals out there that don't need to do that but for mere mortals that is your wisest path.

It could be a problem with your eyesight. You might have that checked just to eliminate one of the possibilities.
Another could be your skill level. Are you a good enough player to expect a high percentage of ball making?
I have always thought that a good indicator of shot making prowess was the spot shot. See how many of them you can make in a row, out of ten.
Is your personal life in order? Believe it, or not, an unfauthful wife can bring about stress that can have a huge impact on how you see the object ball.
Are you using an aiming system such as CTE? If you are then abandon it as quickly as you can and never speak of it again.
Do you drink adult beverages? More pool players have lost a good game to alcohol than for any other reason, other than women.
Is your underwear too tight? Statistics show that nine out of ten pool players can't hit the broad side of a pool hall if their briefs are overly snug. Switch to boxers, or like me, go commando.
There are other reasons for poor performance, such as: Leprosy, old age, a prostate the size of a Cantelope, gun shot wounds, you name it.
The important thing is not to give up. We've all been there. I'm glad I could help.

Yep, I have this problem too. Some days I see the shot lines great and other days it's a struggle.

For me, consistency is the key. That is both in playing regularly and in my pre-shot routine and setup. The more often I play the more consistent my aiming seems to be. When I take a few extra days off it can sometimes cause me some problems. Also, getting into the right position is a big help. For me my head position is crucial. And that is not only the position over the cue but also the angle. Sometimes I've found I have a tendency to tilt my head a little such that my eyes are not on a perfectly horizontal plane and this causes me issue with aiming. When I can recognize that and correct it it will often help on my bad aiming days, though it's not a silver bullet fix and I can still have struggles.

I try to align myself the same every time and I aim at the outside of the object ball every time. Most of the time instead of thinking about where to aim I'm thinking about moving the cue ball where I need it.

Welcome to the club.... we all have problems with that.

I sometimes use my cue tip to visualize the center of my cue ball, at impact, factor in variables from experience, then aim at that point. Voila, it's magic.

Another trick was to visualize the pocket moving closer to the object ball (like a hanger)... that sometimes helps too.

Good Luck...

When I start having a hard time pocketing balls consistently its usually because I am moving my eyes instead of focusing on the object ball, something to consider.

More than a great question. I believe eye sight control will be one of the greatest discoveries since Mosconi's red book.
