Hello All,

I'm fresh off the plane from London and Mosconi Cup and about to watch the matches with commentary.

Just one thing...
If someone tells me a car goes 0 to 60 in 5 seconds, I want to see the specs and test drive it out.
This provides proof that the car performs the way it's being touted.

Unless EVERY player that calls himself PRO can pass The IPAT
(International Playing Ability Test which now lives as Checkbilliard)

We will not improve our confidence or our game.

You want to know what the gauge was for training the Europeans?

This test!

This test was one of the cornerstones of training for Thorsten and most others throughout the EPBF.

Here's the tools- use 'em!!

There's an APP for Pete's sake!
Go find a basement and workout workin' it out!

I, personally, want to know, where we place against everyone else who has taken and passed the test.
Don't you?

the idea of ratings standardization in the us is a big step in the right direction.

a little further out of an idea is a "drills" league system or tournaments.

There is a many of player that does not do well in test yet performed well. Under the lights happens in football draft combine all the time they test out high and can't perform on the field , perfect excample in this yrs 2 Qbs the second guy is far out performing the first guy then you have Tom Brady a 6th round guy ,, we know what he's done
The only true test is playing against competition period

However that's the not the only way information and skill are attained

As I mentioned, this is only one gauge.
It should be used in conjunction with competitive play.

It's no minor test.
6 or 7 contributing European coaches developed this test.
(probably more, I'll ask 'em later)

And whitey don't lie.
Either your stroke is straight or it ain't.

Good thread. Plus, I enjoy reading anything Ralph Eckert-related.

He's definitely a good teacher. :)

One anomaly, like Brady, does not prove your point.

Let me know when the HOF is full of 6th round quarterbacks.

Fantastic perspective.

Good post Angel, me and the lads will give this a whirl, maybe bet a few beers on the outcome!

I've downloaded the app, looking forward to finding out how high we rate on the shit-stroke-ometer ;)

EDIT: The app doesn't work hahaha!!

EDIT2: The app started after about 3 minutes...

EDIT3: Nope, the app is proper ****ed, doesn't work on iPhone :(

Drills are good and I do believe they really help but does it really make a player better or does it just help them be good at drills?

At one tournament I seen a player doing the L drill. He was really great and could have made a video showing how to do it. Smart money would have chose him to be one of the favorites. Problem was he couldn't or didn't know how to play. He was terrible and was knocked out very early.

🎱

I didn't know-

What about Dr. Daves Billiard University Exams? Aren't they similar to this?
He already has a little competition going:

Thank you for telling me this was going on!

I may have passed the thread on to someone else not realizing that I didn't pay it the attention I should have.

Outstanding Dr. Dave!

Part of my point for mentioning the IPAT so fully, was to show the rest of us their
tools and how they came to develop regimines, and eventually a system, after being trounced by the Americans for the first years of the Mosconi Cup.

Onward!

The American test/drill/qualifying procedure for being a pro player for ages has been one thing.

Get in your car, travel to every place in the country that has action, bring back shoe boxes full of Benjamins.

It's great to be able to clear all the drills in the world, but the player needs to connect what they've learned from the drill to real world scenarios. They need to find and identify the shots they've practised in the drill and execute them during their match.

I also would say if this player is executing the L drill perfectly, he needs to move on to something new to improve. It doesn't really do you any good to just execute the same drills perfectly each day.

Only one problem with that scenario Robin. You'll go out hoping for Benjamins...but the likelihood of returning with them is very small. More likely the box will be empty...or possibly filled with ones! LOL

Not quite the same thing. You have several outside factors that directly contribute to your success or failure on the field. The only thing stopping you from succeeding in pool is you and your ability to execute the drills.

Happy New Year Grant!

Hi Grant,
Happy New Year!

I hope after having spoke with Ralph Eckert or Robert Windl, you were able to resolve any uploading issues you may have had.

How's it going now?

Hey Angel,

Happy New Year to you too!

The issues with the app are resolved on the iPhone, I am happy to say :)

I think it's pretty good idea.

Currently going through the college application process with my son, and it's quite an eye opener.

You want to go to certain schools, you need to produce a certain ACT/SAT and very high GPA.

If you want scholarship money, same deal. You have to show them what you are capable of, and what you have done already. Not to mention any leadership qualities that may differentiate yourself from someone else that has the same scores as you.

Bottom line, if a higher profile school is going to accept you, that want to be pretty sure you can handle the rigorous academic work, as they tout Freshman retention rates, graduation rates, number of graduates who go on to graduate studies, etc. etc.

So, yeah, there could be outliers with lower scores who could turn it on in college, and kick arse. maybe they don't do well on tests because of nerves, anxiety, whatever. But for the top private and public universities, they don't have to "roll the dice" as they have more then enough applicants with high scores.

You have to be willing to try something new to move ahead. So, lets see who can handle the "truth".

I still enjoy MC, and eventually, like all things, it will turn around eventually. It only took the Cubs 108 years ;)
