Man, That Alot Of Typing Using One Finger (and guess WHICH finger)
Someone once wrote here (I think it was JB) that "there's an ass for every seat" and I subscribe to that thought as well.
I, like many, have been here at AZB for a looooong time and this avatar subject comes up alot. If you go to the Search box above and type in 'Avatar', you will get 1,000 threads.
I like the fact that even though moderated, AZB is self policed in most instances and I'd like to discuss this avatar use from every angle in this thread and maybe finally put it to rest. In the future, when avatar posts are brought up once again, perhaps we could link THIS thread as repy. We could make THIS thread the definitive general consensus on the proper use of avatars and how to turn them Off & On for viewing.
Beauty, ugliness, vulgarity, obscenity, humor, appropriateness, etc. differ to each individual. I have received PM's from offended parties asking me to remove my avatars of:
Michael Jackson's nose falling off
The person smoking a crack pipe
The obese man in his bed
The obese girl wearing American flags
The stickman leapfrog
Hillary Clinton standing at a urinal
When I posted these (and other) avatars, I thought that they were funny or pertinent to the thread/post to which I was replying. Others disagreed.
I understand that some avatars may be too graphic for the workplace, but the person worried about that could simply turn them OFF at work. I understand that some members feel that some avatars are unsuitable for young viewers, but I would guess that 99% of AZB's readers/viewers are adults (or young adults).
Imo, almost all of the children of today have access to and use of a computer and the language & avatars of AZB's members are mild, compared to what is available and easily accessible by today's youth online.
As members here, let's try to sort this avatar issue out. I don't like the idea of reporting individuals to the Moderators and I feel that a truly offensive avatar may be dealt with by all of the offended parties PMing the poster. Surely, there is some agreeable solution to just how far we as adults should be allowed to go.
I'm on the vB3 skin for viewing threads and at the top of each page is a link titled RATE THIS THREAD. Perhaps we could rate a thread for inappropriate avatars or images.
The warning NSFW (Not Suitable For Workplace) in a thread's title is a good idea, but we all know that someone will certainly forget to insert it in their title. One problem (at least for me) is that when I reply to certain posts, I will post an avatar pertinent to that thread and my reply, but it changes your avatar in EVERY post that you have in the Forums.
What's appropriate or funny in one thread, may be highly offensive in another thread with a totally different subject. Someone may have a thread asking for prayers for a loved one or mentioning a loved one's passing. You may have replied to their post with an avatar of a wreath or vase of flowers and the next day, you now have a busty naked girl eating a hotdog as your avatar.
I hope that we can ask and answer all (or most) avatar concerns in this thread and refer to it in the future, instead of having an entirely new thread put up every week or two. What say ye ?
My Stickman Leapfrog avatar is a good case example. It has nothing depicting body parts or the sex of either stick person, yet some will certainly find it offensive and sexually suggestive. Others will not. Noone can dictate or say what's in a reader's 'minds eye'. We probably need to draw the line somewhere, but WHERE ? Each individuals 'line' is unique to that individual.
Is there an answer ? I hope so, or else Mr. Wilson will be left deciding what's appropriate and whether or not to remove the offending avatar (AND, perhaps the the poster as well). Whatever he decides, he will catch hell as usual and become the topic of threads on other sites.... imo
