I've been reading some cool stories, and every once in a while someone
mentions the term "Firing and air-barrel" or "Air Barreling" I've been thinking
about it and cannot figure out exactly what that term means. Could you
guys help me out please? Thanks in advance guys (and Gals)

Air Barrel... placing a bet without the money to back it up if you lose

Don't feel stupid--I didn't know what it was until a little bit ago either. My initial impression, until someone explained it, was that it might be shooting and missing everything. Sort of like shooting an air ball in basketball.

When you are gambling take the amount you have and divide it by the amount you want to gamble for. Say you have $100 and you want to play $10 a game. You have ten bullets to fire at someone.

If you run out of bullets then you only have air left in your gun, hence the term firing an air barrel.

Some people start out with nothing more than an air barrel.

This is why people prefer to have the opponent post the money, to avoid being air barreled. If you play "on the wire" meaning you are just marking games and not paying off each game then you stand a good chance to be air barreled for some or all of the amount you are up when the session ends.

If you are paying by the game or set without posting then it's likely that the last game your opponent plays before they quit is on air. A lot of opponents will fire the air barrel hoping to win and get back on the winning side.

So would it be accurate to say that AIG, a few investment banks, the subprime mortgage industry and possibly GM have recently fired an air barrel because they've been gambling with money that they don't have? LOL. Maybe that one should have been NPR.

An AAir Barrell is: Well put it this way, Would you like to play some?

It's OK to ask. No stupid questions here.

If it makes you feel better, here's a story from my youth.

When I was a kid, I would watch baseball on TV and wonder how they got the balls that were hit into the crowd back down onto the field so fast.

It never dawned on me that the umpire had a huge pocket of baseballs at his disposal.

My cash must be in my other golf bag

Lee Trevino was being interviewed by a golf reporter once. The question was, "How do you compete in major PGA tournaments with the immense pressure of hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money?" Trevino said, "Playing in Tourneys for someone else's money is no pressure whatsoever, real pressure was playing a local hotshot for $100's per ball when you only have $16 to your name!" <---- that's airbarreling:wink:
