OB Cues break cue and shaft

Rayjay,

There are a few small differences.

First, the taper is different. Yes, it is 13mm at the tip, but the taper does grow a little faster over the first 10". Not so much that it jams in your bridge, but enough to be noticeably stiffer.

Second, the core on the inside is the smaller core used in the OB-2. Again, this adds stiffness.

The Break shaft has slightly more squirt than the stock OB-1, but it is still extremely low for a break shaft. Considering that the break shot is usually at the center of the cue ball the slight miss hit will still produce very little to no squirt and allow you to still hit the rack very square.

Thanks!

Hello Royce,

I was wondering if the shaft could be used as a player if the tip/pad were changed? I emailed you a while back regarding if an OB-1 could be made to custom specs. Unfortunately you were no longer accepting these requests due to the busy launch of the OB-2. The OB Break Shaft seems to meet what I was looking for; 13mm, slightly stiffer and still low deflection.

Also is there a wrap option for the Break Stick and would you say the low deflection is around that of the BK2?

Thanks Royce.

I've heard that high deflection is good for jumping too. However, I had my BK2 cut into a jump break and it jumps very well. Mine also does not have the phenolic tip, I put on a very hard soaked and pressed water buffalo tip and it still jumps great. From what I've experienced, you just really need a stiff shaft, hard ferrule and hard tip to jump?

definitely agree with you on LD for breaking, it helps so much!

did you start a thread about that about 4 years ago? i think i remember it. you ended with a story of you having to use it to jump a ball and make the 8 during league night?

McChen,

Currently our cue is a Break Cue only. Our testing found that Break/Jump cues are a compromise. They are good at one or the other, not both.

Low Squirt, or deflection, is huge on the break. The cue ball doesn't jump up as much, and you hit the front of the pack more full a higher percentage of the time. Most jump break combos are high deflection, which makes them jump very well, but makes them hard to control on the break. Don't get me wrong, when you hit them perfect, they break great. The problem is how often do you hit them perfect?

We do have a jump cue in the prototype stages and it works very well. Oddly enough we have a method of making it Low Deflection or squirt, and it still jumps very easily. However, I don't think we can use those same methods in a break cue.

Thanks!

Hi Royce,

I'm still loving the Break Cue....... please let me know if you do get a jump cue into production!!!!!!

i think i did post something about having my bk2 cut down into a j/b and that it jumped very well. can't remember now a particular story about jumping and making the 8 for the win, but it sounds good, so i'll assume it is true, haha :)

looking forward to the ob break cue/shaft, it sounds like it will a winner. i am seriously considering getting one.

you know what would be really awesome...putting the ob break shaft on a mezz powerbreak II butt. I've really liked the PB2 for awhile now and with a LD shaft I think it would be awesome. a standard 5/16x14 should fit, but would be much cooler if they could make it in a United Joint!

Jaw,

Yes, the OB Break shaft can be used as a player. Actually, you can play with it with the Samsara tip! Its too hard for me, but you can draw the ball the length of the table with it if you really want to!

The Break shaft is 13mm, so it does have more deflection, or squirt than the OB-1, but if you want a stiff, lower than normal deflection cue shaft it would be great at it.

Dave,

Thanks! I will let you know!

The prototypes are a big hit. I just have to figure out a way to build them in production.

McChen,

The united joint is actually build around the 5/16x14 thread with a different minor diameter. Our inserts are a little smaller than most, so they actually fit the United joint very well. You just might have to try one on the PB2!

Mezz is actually our Distributor in Japan. They build a few models exclusively with the OB Shafts. I have a copy of the "Cues" magazine from over there. It reads backwards! The back is the front, and the front is the back! Mezz put some very nice OB/Mezz ads in it.

Thanks!

Yeah, I've used 5/16x14 shafts on my united joint and it fits, though just not quite with that awesome precision that i love about the united joint. I did see on the Mezz website about the Mode series with OB-1 shafts, a very nice partnership! I think there would be some opportunity to extend that to the break cues, they don't really have an LD shaft for their Powerbreaks. Would be great to see the OB Break shaft with a united joint, though I suppose I can live with the 5/16x14 fit. Do you know if they will eventually make OB-1/2 shafts for United or Wavy joints with the matching ringwork?

Folks,

I've said this before in previous threads, but this shaft rocks! It's a super solid hit and feels very good when you hit the cue ball. Playing on a team, I have let all my previous team mates and some friends break with the stick and nearly all of the had great things to say and most are going to buy it when it goes production.

I know you don't know me outside of the forums, but you will not be disappointed with this break stick/shaft.

Cheers,

Dan

You ever use it to play with?
