Getting straight to the point..

I've been playing on this McDermott Cue for about a year and have been thinking about upgrading the shaft to a OB2.

However..

I am able to buy this Meucci cue w/ Black dot shaft for about $185

The question..

Which would serve me better (aka better buy)?

-The new shaft would be around $230
-I have never played with a Muecci so I am going purely off of reputation
-I can't play it before I buy. It's new.
-I like how my MD cue plays and the OB2 would be a great addition

I am 20 y/o and I am looking for the best combination to aid me in the future.. What would you advise?

I would go with the OB2. It is made in a america and Roy stands behind his products. The meucci, honestly, is fire wood. Newer meucci's have had so many quality control issues.

thanks for the advice guys.

While waiting on replies I managed to find the OB2's for $189 with a discount code from seyberts.

I'll wait until the morning (for me) and if the comments and poll keep going the way they are I'll have my decision made.

Thanks again for the help.

Please, keep posting..

I voted for the OB2, The Meucci's of today are very poorly made, and in my opinion the black dot shafts are terrible (I have owned about 7-10 Meucci's when I was younger, never again). The OB Shafts are a fine product and unlike Meucci Quality IS important to them.

Up in the air

As for the Meucci vs the OB2 hard to say because I myself have never played with an OB shaft

I have heard that meucci quality has been headed downhill fast for the past few years and here is my personal experiance

I own 3 meucci cues , a low end Meucci original from 1986 white maple black lenin wrap no bells no whistles great playing cue have owned it for 24 years , also I have a O-1 from 1989 or 90 first year that they changed to the meucci scripted signature again plays pretty well was my Dads cue alot of sentimental value also have had it nearley 20 years . and then there is the HOF-1 from 2004 that i have had for 6 years only hit a few balls with becuse it feels terrible its a beauty but i would sooner play with a house cue but it was a gift from the Other half so i keep it around and tell her how glad i am she bought for me and that i dont want to wear it out or scratch it up is why i dont use it ( SHHHHHH) lol

Right now meucci is a crap shoot and if you cant play it before you lay down your hard earned money I woud say steer clear of them. From what i see of Meucci now a days is 90 dollar cue quality with a 400 dollar + price tag on most models trying to get by on a past reputation that is quickly fading

I`d say that the OB2 would be your best bet. IMO it`s more suitable to get a new shaft on an old cue, than buying an new cue that you never have tried before.

There`s also a better change of reselling the OB2 with its good reputation, if you possibly don`t like it. But on the Meuccis side, the new models aren`t so popular when it comes to buying, as you can see from the earlier posts.

I myself play with an Meucci MTC-3 (with a Predator 314 shaft) and I think it`s the best cue I`ve ever played with.

I bought a brand new Muecci hof 4 with the black dot shaft ... Shot with it a time or two... I was attracted to the cue for the infamous gambler design... The shaft was so wimpy I just did not like it ,not fond of the small pin either. I had a friend who played good pool and played on my league team. I paid 300.00 for the cue but my friend was shooting with a sleeper Players cue that someone gave him. The end of the butt was broken off and he would get splinters in his hand when grabbing near the end of the cue. I figured what the heck I have this cue I paid 300.00 for and will never use... So I gave the HOF4 to him to help him out. He treats the cue like it was gold and loves it ... He could not believe I just up and gave him the cue... It was the best 300.00 I ever spent just to see the joy on his face.

My point is that I did not like how the cue shot mostly because of the black dot shaft .... But my friend loves it so maybe you should try both shafts out before you choose... I have shot and owned the OB and predetor shafts and liked both of them....

I started out playing with a meucci black dot. It was my dad's old stick, he didn't like it as much as his old brunswick so he gave it to me. personally I wasn't a big fan of the black dot so i changed the shaft to a 314-2 which i'm very happy with, but since that's not a choice i voted for the ob2. I've only hit with an ob2 shaft a couple of times but I did like the hit.

You asked for advice .....

I'm a weekend player these days touching on the big 60, so I don't know too much about those things. I've heard of OBwonkanobi or something like that but not OB 2.

Anyway I run a lot of 40's 50's and some 60's. I've run a high of 78 on this shaft

http://cgi.ebay.com/29-99-PANTHER-1...496?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item483d2e72a8

But ... I've never run 79. Sooo .... I can only suggest that if you want to run 79 or more, don't get one of these.

What my attempt at humor is really saying, is, I think it's all a bunch of bull and there's nothing wrong with a good, straight piece of wood with a good $1 tip on it.

Save your money and buy a nice dinner.

Why not get a OB Classic or Classic Pro (and not have to look at that funny looking ferrule)? You can get an unfinished one for about $140 and get it matched up to your McD (probably for another $40 or $50). I have a black dot, a red dot and a Classic Pro. I like them in this order--- Classic Pro, red dot and then black dot.

Ob2

I've actually had both shafts and for me, there is no comparison. The OB2 shaft is a far superior shaft in playability.

Like a great pool player once told me, it's all about getting used to your equipment. That being said if I have to get used to a playing shaft, so far it is OB2, every time.

I still try other shafts from time to time and will continue to search for other equipment to improve my game but for right now, I like the "power" that the conical tapered OB2 provides as well as the lower cue ball deflection. The tip and ferrule are narrow. I have used the standard tip with the OB2 for a long while but am now enjoying a new pair of shoes with Kamui, along with their Gator Grip tip conditioner.

I no longer pay attention to the color of the ferrule or the sound that the ferrule makes or doesn't make. It's all about performance for me.

I have both types of cues. I have had the mcdermott for 8 years. It is a solid cue,and I got a lot better with it. I think they are great cues for the money they are. I also have a meucci that i've had around 3 years.About 2 years,5 months the cue hasnt even came back out of the case. I have no interest in buying another meucci. If you pick up a good shaft for your mcdermott it will give you a chance to expand your game. I know a lot of people who buy meucci's based on yesteryear. Don't be fooled.

In my personal experience, Meucci's product quality and customer service these days are both terrible.

And, IMHO, you have to go back to their glory days when their logo was non-cursive and included the word "originals" to get a great cue.

I played exclusively with a Meucci Original for close to 20 years and enjoyed it immensely. I've tried out some of the newer models and and they are unimpressive.

Add to all this, the fact that Royce at OB is a great guy dedicated to manufacturing high quality, innovative products, it should be an easy decision.

GL!

Best,
Brian kc

I love Seybert's! Best I've been able to find in the way of price, fast/free shipping, customer service, and the Seybert bucks! (and no, I don't work there or own it, lol)

There are some of the cursive Meucci cues that shoot well. But anything new is simply JUNK! I've shot with all 3 shafts (black dot, red dot, and pre dot) and the red dot and black dot are simply junk.

Dont know enough about the OB's though.

Thanks for all of the advice. I decided to go with the OB2 after seeing all of the negative comments relating to the Meucci. It's really a shame that their quality is no longer matching their reputation.

Thanks again. :)
