Octagonal Chalk...Why?

Haha weird! I have a distinct inability to play with low deflection 8 spliced chalk, I'm moving back to my square Masters, more "feel" and BHE works a charm with it :)

Octagonal chalk allows you to get more fingers on the cube for ease of chalking.
It is twice as easy to chalk when you can get 8-fingers in the octagon at one time.
Traditional cube chalk limits your chalkability to one hand, 4-fingers, which is hard for some people to coordinate.
I guess you could chalk with two fingers on each hand with a traditional cube, but that would be stupid>>

Could you post up a video to explain this. I would love to see exactly what you are talking about:thumbup:

Wouldn't we all? if he gets time to film it he's a genius, hands are pretty tied up I reckon.

I used to play with some people that would put the cue on the floor at a 60 degree angle, grab the chalk and tip with one hand, place their foot on the butt plate of the cue, move their foot back and forth to make the cue "roll" on the floor and chalk without movement in the hand. He could do it like this. Hope that made sense.

That could possibly be the future of chalking right there!

Post

Ever been so deep in to a game of pool and grabbed the chalk naturally without looking especially during a thought out shot and chalked with the side of a piece of masters you might ask yourself for another shape.

It had to be octagonal or the name 1080 wouldn't work.

1080 degrees is the sum of all internal angles in an octagon.

And here I was thinking it was named after a Poison.
Many years ago, they made round chalk that was not much bigger than that of a cue tip.
But square chalk is easier and cheaper to make.

I'm speaking about the Predator 1080 Pure. Does anyone know why Predator have made it octagonal? If I didn't know better I would say its Blue Diamond, but not square. Colour, texture and feel are almost identical. Doesn't leave a mess on the CB as much as BD though.

Interesting you found less mess on the CB than Blue Diamond. I like the chalk, however, I found just the opposite (Pred leaves much more chalk on the CB than Blue Diamond) especially on the Aramith Measles.

Yeah I get almost no chalk spots on my measles CB. Even when I hammer the break I get a faint spot, with a few specs of chalk around the spot. Blue Diamond covered my CB every 2 or 3 racks. If I go 6 or so racks without wiping the CB then wiping alone won't get the chalk spots off, I'd have to use water. No such problem with Predator. It is quite dry here compared to some places in the US so that has a part to play. I'm going to try baking one in the oven to dry it out more. Works with Masters and Blue Diamon really well, and lessens the mess it leaves on the cloth, hands and CB.

I just wish it was square, I honestly don't mind calling it Predator 360 Pure :)

They dropped the price to 3 bucks for a sleeve of 12 of them and put them out in an email "blow out prices" advertisement. I'm not surprised they are out of stock now. I bought them just to have around my game room as a joke, they look cool and give people a chuckle with the name.

I can't understand why it isn't a cube. I chalk towards the corners of a cube of chalk which leaves a nice 'X' shape that fits my tip perfectly and doesn't make as much mess as if I rubbed it randomly in any direction
I do the same with traditional cubes and actually you will find out that with octagonal Predator you have two Xs instead of one. And they overlap so that you actually have a neat round-shaped divot inside the piece of chalk. Octagon is easier to hold with fingers, like mentioned, and it rolls farther under the table if dropped (like mentioned before in previous Predator chalk threads:wink:)

They'll eventually sell octagonal chalk holders, which forces you to buy more predator chalk to fill them
as nothing else will :P

Out of stock. Typical.

I don't think it's being made any longer. It was called Pyramid Chalk and was 'made' by Elephant Balls.

Out of curiosity, I just purchased a tube of the Predator 1080 chalk from cheapcues.com on eBay. If I like it, I'll make my own chalk holder, cuz I'm crafty like that.

Corey @Crown City Billiards in Pasadena, CA recommended some of this but I haven't had a chance to try it.

I think he also said it will fit in a normal square chalk holder, no need to reinvent the square so to speak.

Seriously who give a crap about the shape?? I found the shape nice to look at and made chalking easier. I own a tube of 5 and I went back to Masters after the first cube, er... Whatever piece

I love the feel and playability of Predator chalk is great but its way messy. I can't believe most people haven't said anything about it being messy. I cleaned my shafts and the table before playing one night and within the first 5 racks I noticed that my bridge hand was full of chalk residue and started to become sticky. I constantly had to wash my hands and wipe down my shafts so it wouldn't build up on me or the table.

I switched back to Masters the next time out and I didn't notice any difference. I may play with Predator in a match but never for practice again.
