Off the stack break shots

Thanks for yet again taking the time to make the video and post this. Your contributions are always much appreciated.

Great Job David,

i had to play a shot similar the other day. i fell bad on a breakshot and my cut angle was way to steep and even if i cut it in i would of missed the stack. so instead i pull out one of these doosie's and add on about another 20 some odd balls to the run.

Thanks for sharing !

Steve

Thanks

Great videos.
On the 2nd break shot, did you hit the cue ball with Center?

It seems like for me. I end up with break shots off the rack when the object ball is slightly higher then the rack, with the cue on an angle. I make the shot 40% of the time which is too low of a % in my opinion. It is something that I need to practice or better yet to ovoid those situations.

It depends on the angle. I have another video of the same exact shot -

Incredible Straight Pool Break Shot

in that video I use center follow. I just look to see the tangent line where the ball will come off the stack, and fire through it.

If you try it, you'll see that this shot is not half as incredible as I think it is.

:)

Thanks

Thanks David.
I do remember watching that clip a time back but it is always good to refresh one's gray matter. You are a big help here on AZ and it is appreciated.

PS: Being a big time Yankee Fan..... Bill Buckner is one of my Hero's even if it was for the Mets.

I kind of miss seeing your photo of when you were a weslter...... LOL

the English tips are good but how are you aiming the ball off the other ones..like a full ball hit 1/2 ball etc

David, do you think a safety would be the better play what with these shots being such low pct.?
that's kind of what I should have said the first time.

If I was sitting on 98 looking for my first 100 I don't think I would play any of these shots, sorry. I don't want it like that. the correct shot is a safety. These are 25% shots at best, even with practice.
Maybe if I wanted to totally disrespect my opponent...
steven

The intention of the video was to point out other options, options that may be low percentage, but they are still options.

If you take your time with these and learn how to "work" the ball off of another ball, you will see that they are more than 25%.

Disrespect? LOL! You lost me on that one. I learned most of these shots from Cowboy Jimmy Moore. He was infamous for calling kisses and caroms like these shots, and they were hangers for him.

Agreed. I learned these shots and lots of kiss shots when I was learning to play. With practice, they are better than 25%.

Nice work, David!

I said disrespect because I had a guy shoot one off the rack and that is what I felt at the time.
He did make the shot though.

Don't feel bad

Don't feel bad about those shots off the rack. They take a lot of skill & practice to get them down. They are a part of the game and they do come up once in a while. I have played balls off other balls during a game when my opponent thought I was completely dead with no shot. They are great to see & make. They come up in 9 ball & 8 ball too.
Practicing those shots are a Good Thing.

Playing a guy in an in-house-league many years ago, I called the six ball in the stack. {Straight Pool} I hit the cue ball and he picked up his cue and started for the table. The six ball came out of the pile and slowly made its way to the corner pocket. When it fell, I thought he was going to faint, he just didn't see the shot and I did, when he played safe.

I agree carom shots are a big part of the game, I play them often enough. I believe what bj says about Jimmy M. He must have really owned these shots.
Maybe at my level some players might have at it but I don't see John or Thorsten playing the off the rack breakshot in the world championship.

Maybe you never seen John or Thorsten take those shots off the rack b/c those shots have never come up. That does not mean the shot is no good to try.
I am sure there are plenty of other Pros pass & present who have taken those shots and made them during a match. But if you feel that playing a safety is the proper call for you when that shot comes up. I say Great. Stick with what you feel is the best for you. but you should not feel disrespected, if your opponent does it to you. It is his or hers feeling toward that shot.

I was joking around in my basement yesterday with some equal offense and I dogged position and remembered this shot. It laid pretty good and I tried to hit about half of the corner ball with the billiard. It's not a good run but does show the shot. Another 14.1 shot is revealed there if you notice where the corner ball goes. Not a shot you would normally play in competition but when trying to continue a run the corner ball up table is a viable shot.

Thanks for starting this thread. Amidst all the other stuff on this website there is some excellent knowledge if you look for it.
