Official Desert Shootout Updates

You know, I had my doubts when the tournament was moved from the Sheraton, but I have to admit, they've done a real good job and I'm not so sure that being at the Sheraton would have been any better. There is plenty of seating on those bleachers, the tables are playing fine (at least the ones I played on did), and it's brought a ton of excitement to a local pool room.

Speaking about those bleachers, they moved all of their bar tables and brought the bleachers in on a one-day notice. They found out they were hosting the tournament on Tuesday around 4:00PM, and stayed up all night, until 6:00AM from what I hear, moving tables and bringing in bleachers. Everyone involved in this tournament definitely deserves a ton of credit for all the work they did to salvage the event after the venue fell through. And, unlike what seems to be standard practice of adding money based on a minimum number of players, Chuck added the entire $25,000 despite getting only half of the 128 that he was hoping for! To say that I'm impressed with the way the tournament has gone, despite the issues with the Sheraton, would be an understatement.

Of course, I don't have to say anything about the tournament directors (Jay and Bull) since they always do a great job. :) Jay has tons of experience directing large tournaments and is always a good guy to have at the helm. I believe this is Bull's first crack at running an event of this magnitude and he's done a great job so far.

I'll be back to sweat some matches this weekend if I can get off diaper duty long enough.

hello all,

I just wanted to say thank you for all the updates and posts for this event. I can't believe that no one is covering this event online, no brackets are available or anything. You guys have been the only lifeline of communication and I really appreciate it! I had family go out to watch TR play and they said the event was so cool to watch (they don't know anything about 10-ball. Asked if whoever pockets the most balls is the winner!! LOL) But they loved the seating and the players there and they just had a great time. Better than the Sheraton!

Great job guys!!

What is the story on the second chance event?

Is that still going to happen? What is the enrty?

I think there was supposed to be one at Metro, but I am not sure it that is still on.

I was amazed at how good the venue at Kolbys turned out...I kind of worked out perfect...some practice tables in the back for the players and bleachers on the opposite side. The only way it would have been better was to have switched out the GCs for the Daimonds... but that was not really necessary...:)

Great Job Chuck, Jay, Bull

1:00 today at Metro for the 2nd chance tourny....don't know the details.

Rick S.

I can't say enough about the way Kolby's has stepped up big for this tourny. Maybe it will open some eyes and we can have more big events like this in PHX.

After the matches last night. I was about to leave but decided to try out the new tip Dale put on for me. (thanks Dale, it hits much better) Anyway, we ended up staying until they closed at 3:00am!

I can't wait for today's matches.

I was in Metro yesterday, and spoke with Al one of the owners. I will try and fill you in on what he told me, and what was in the Arizona Billiards Info April 2008.

Info say ?12 NOON Start?, so I assume that means you need to sign up before NOON to be in.

Info says ?$125.00/Player Entree Fee + $25.00/Player Registration?

Info says ?$3,000.00 add, 64 player limit, First Shootout players, than stand ins?

I believe the tournament is the same 10 ball format as the Shootout, with a $3,000.00 Ad.

Al told me and I saw with my eyes all the Gold Crown were re done last week, by Dave Clayton. The table are in GREAT SHAPE

Entree Fee now is a Flat $75.00/Player

Tournament is not limited to 64, but as many as want to play.

Metro Sport Bar Phone # is 602-997-5717 They are in Metro Center Near the intersection of Interstate 17, and Peoria Ave.

Hope this info helps.

I know a couple of the pros who do not have cars with them. Is anyone going up to Metro today who has a car and willing to give a ride to 1 or 2 players from Kolby's?

Thanks for the updates, Jay. Wow, what a stellar playing field.

Oscar is definitely on the rise. I hope to keep seeing him at upcoming events. I've been watching his progress since several U.S. Opens ago, and I am impressed.

What are you still doing awake a 4:00 a.m.? Too much coffee, I'll bet! :p

Hmmm....Let me see if I get this right. There is a Pro Tournament in the Phoenix area and it is being held in a local poolroom. Another local poolroom holds a 2nd Chance event to hopefully draw 64 players from the Pro Tournament thus reducing the support from the local pool community to the first local poolroom hosting the Pro Event.

And you wonder why pool will never have the same appeal as golf, tennis or other sports. I would think that the 64 players that may go over to the 2nd chance event would be there to watch the last two days of the Pro Tournament AND add support to the local poolroom that worked so hard to put this event together at the last minute.

Many pool players want to be catered to but should remember that business owners cater to customers and to hold a tournament the same weekend and draw many customers away from the first event will greatly reduce gate/food/drink revenues from the establishment that worked their butts off to do something for the great Arizona Pool Community.

Nice job on the 2nd Chance event, hope it goes well. I would like to see how Metro would feel if someone was INTENTIONALLY drawing from their revenues after they worked so hard to bring something of value to the community.

The poolrooms all worked together to bring 3 tournaments. The Qualifier at Alexander's, the Shootout, and the 2nd Chance $3000 added tourney at Metro. The 2nd chance was already planned before the venue change so I think you are off base on this one Gum9Ball.

There is nothing negative taking place here. The tournament was originally scheduled at the Sheraton, which is right across the street from Metro. The 2nd chance tournament was coordinated with the main event and, unless I'm mistaken, Chuck is putting up money for the 2nd chance tournament as well. It just so happens that the tournament was moved to a local pool room across town, so now it appears the rooms are competing when they really are not.

I believe the ?Second Chance Event? was planned to give those players who were (2) and out by Saturday a second chance to cash in on a $3,000.00 add Tournament while in the Valley for the Shootout.

Think it was wonderful that the Owners of Metro Sports Bar, dropped the entree fee from $150.00 total to $75.00 as I was told Saturday.
