I am a confirmed APA basher on several levels but for the good of the sport's future I have to admit league play is the last bastion for growth...

With that said I rejoined the APA Masters League last night... While I played poorly from layers of rust it did not get in the way of the social aspect of team play. I enjoyed meeting the players on the other team and seeing faces that I only see when the league is playing....

So the evil APA got me out of the house, on the tables and I had a great time... I think in the last 19 months I may have played 5 times for more than an hour outside of some drills I was doing a year or so ago at home..

Maybe league on Tuesdays will be enough to get me to move practice up the list of priorities..... I'm sure I'll have more to comment on next week.. but for now last night was great =)

Its works

APA and BCA are the only hopes for pool. They both have a good following and bring more business to the pool hall than anything else. I have gambled all my pool life, but I also joined a league last year just to support the room.

If we the players dont get the people involved that are not players, the sport wont last. The Pro's cant do it, its got to be, for lack of a better term, grass roots, A- to b players pulling the c and d players along.

Renfro,

Started the same way nearly two years ago. Relish the time I spend with my team mates. Liked it so much, I play APA two days a week. Was hesitant at first because of the "slop" factor. If I see it happen once a month, its a lot.

Still enjoy playing with my Rochester 4 person BCAPL team on Wednesday nights. Just got moved to a 10.5 ! Lose half a point even when I win! Better that than have players quit the league.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! Don't take it too seriously. It's only a game!

Don't forget TAP, VNEA and ACS. They also help bring players out. Several of the pool rooms I frequent also offer "in house" league play. Lots of folks don't care if they go to Vegas for a "National" tournament. Or pay extra for the priviledge.

League

TAP league is pretty good. Always gripes about handicap, but I guess that's unavoidable.

I really enjoy the Masters format. Everyone is there to play pool. It eliminates a lot of the hucklebuck aspect of league night with people who don't know the rule, think they know the rules and want to call everything a foul, drunks punks and chicken necks...

Although I feel like the league whipping boy at the moment, winning a meager 20% and losing to guys I feel I should be beating, my losses are close and the wins hard fought and satisfying.

It's a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon

I agree. The guys who do nothing but gamble are the ones who say leagues are shit but your right....if not for leagues like apa and bca this game would be dead. Pool halls are closing ...bar leagues are the only place most people can go and compete. I was against apa but now that I joined a 9 ball league I really see the benefit of it. There are a few annoying things but the truth Is it's nice to see people who can barely put 3 balls together who may have no interest in getting better then that coming out and contributing to the game because they feel they have a chance to compete and have some fun. I know it's a crazy thought but to some people pool isn't the end all be all like it is for us lol and thats okay!!!! With apa they can still enjoy the game!

Welcome back! I just came back to APA this session after 5 years away, and almost as long being away from pool. I am enjoying it. Now I am playing 3 different leagues.

Some people I know in VNEA don't like the slop-factor in APA and won't play, but how many do you really see slopped in during the course of a night? I don't see that many.

Are four was playing a 3 nine ball. They needed 3 balls to win. He missed his shot but slopped in 3 balls in other pockets to win. It was actually pretty amazing to watch lol.

I too just returned to the APA after a 4 or 5 year hiatus. Loving it so far! Playing APA one night a week and BCA one night, wife won't let me out more than that :(

But again, loving a chance to play and enjoying the social aspect.

A couple of my friends play, and they're home bar for league is right around the corner from where I live so I've went and hung out a couple times. It looks pretty fun. I don't dig the slop aspect, but I could get over that. I'd like to join their team next session, but we probably all can't be on the team because of the total handicap limit.

I know I frequently gripe about the APA but I think leagues are good for pool. My biggest issue with the APA is I think the national organization should run it more like a franchise and enforce consistent rules and consistent behavior from their LO's. Just IMO.

Good post!

The picture in your avatar, is that the look on your face after your wife told you that two nights-a-week of pool is all that you're getting ???

Yeah :( she made me a sad puppy.....

that's actually the look my basset gives me whenever I have to leave the house and not be paying specific attention to him....he may be a bit spoiled.

Kudos!!! Many do not understand the importance of doing this. I usually buy a drink or two even if I don't necessarily want them. If the poolhall/bar that I play out of ain't making money, it ain't gonna stay in business very long. Heck, I've seen players come in two hours early on league night, get their free rack of balls and never buy anything all night (just drink water). These people are putting some serious hurt on the establishment.

The slop factor is not a big deal once you get used to it. I just have to remember I played 9 ball for years with allowing slop, so I figure why not in 8 ball too. In my last 5 or 6 matches, I think I've only had one situation where a guy dogged in a ball on me. Come to think of it, it did cost me the game!

I take it you're a straight pool player though...so I guess it would be harder to swallow coming from the discipline.

My BCA league I play in has call the ball and pocket rules, that may be an option if there is one in your area?
