Both responses seem perfectly polite to me, what's the problem?

That being said, I just started playing league for the first time and "good luck" seems to be the common pre-match salutation.

like I said I'm old school in every sport I played which basicly is all of them you told the guy good luck ,, I feel telling a guy play well means don't play good or have luck
What I have found this happens at the higher level

I can't ever remember a time when I asked a pool player how they were doing that they didn't say , I can't make a ball , or I'm playing terrible.

Times change. Words mean different things to different people now.
Just the other day a young girl comes into our pool room and sits down at one of the tables. I walk by, stop, and before I can open my mouth she says. "Don't even think about it, creep."
I say. "I was only going to say that you look like a million bucks."
"You think so?" She demurely replies.
"Yeah." I say. "All green and freakin' wrinkled."
You gotta be able to think on your feet, one stroke. :)

As I said I'm old school that's just how we did it , what's funny is if you get a few rolls then it's not you played well you got luckey

You just answered your own question.

Players today would rather you beat them with skill.

13...tough time for everybody.

Does she walk far ahead, or behind or on the other side of the street when you are out in public together?:embarrassed2::embarrassed2:

not old school enough

Everyone I knew at the Cotton Palace, Times Square or wherever
in Dallas didn't say anything except flip it. I damn sure didn't want
them to get lucky or play well. I wanted them to play like s### and
get every bad roll possible. The only thing I wanted to here afterward
was you got the time ? and can I get a little walking around money

I'm with you on this one stroke. I always say good luck. Around the mid to late 90s it started to be popular for people to say "play well" because they didn't want people to get lucky on them.

Of course nobody wants someone to beat them with luck, but by saying "good luck" you are really saying that you hope they don't get terrible rolls because you don't want to beat them with the rolls either. It's more of a 'let's have an even playing field and let skill determine the winner' kind of sentiment.

The 'play well' thing is a solution to a problem that never existed IMO.

So I say 'good luck' and if someone says 'play well' I try and manufacture as much luck as I possibly can during the match. Because I'm an a*hole. :D

The young punks who say "play well" obviously have no idea that pool has one of highest luck% amongst individual sports
I would say "good riddance" who say "play well"
:)

I always just tell people, "Lets have some fun".

To be honest, I dont want any opponent of mine to win, so wishing him well in the outcome of the match or suggesting that he 'play well', which IMO is akin to saying 'good luck, youre going to need it.....', just seems disingenuous bordering on rude to me. I would rather lighten the mood and make people feel that Im wishing them well, when Im really just uttering a meaningless pleasantry before we play.

I get more put off by bad winners and sore losers, than I do if someone doesnt wish me luck. Because as you know..... for some players.... luck itself is an art......:grin:

I want to win. It's much more fun to win a good match than to clobber an opponent. Good luck, play well. If I say it to you I'm being sincere, I guess it's 1984 and words mean the reverse for some.

I don't say "good luck" because I wouldn't mean it. I do not want my opponent to get lucky.
I say "play well" because I do mean that, I would like for him to play well (and lose). If he plays
well and wins then at least he played well.

gr. Dave

I guess it all depends on the inflection of the voice on delivery. Even though I always say "good luck", a friendly handshake and mild delivery of "play well" isn't offensive to me before a match. However... I have had opponents who would say "Play Well" with an inflection to their words that sounded as if they were arrogantly trying to psych me out or intimidate me... or sometimes even say nothing and ignore me when I'd tell them "good luck".
Some people just have to have their Lee Brett (own the perimeter of the table) game face on when they shoot, while others mean well when they say anything other than "good luck".
If you watch golf tournaments on TV, usually the guy announcing each starting group will close by saying "Play well gentlemen".

I don't mind either way because I've won by luck... but I've also won games, matches and runs that were so perfectly executed that I knew... that's why I love this game... that's what I want to do all of the time.
So don't let your opponent get into your head with words (or anything else). Just be friendly and try to make them a spectator. Do as they suggest... Play Well... and keep them comfortably seated.

ok im old but where did good luck go

HI Been watching snooker on the Internet which comes from England

I heard the referee of the match say to the player play well
