Ok, I've had enough, finally Part 1

A friend of mine told me a story about how he loaned Ronnie $1500, and Ronnie gave him a bad or fake check (i dont remember which) to pay it back. I've got another friend that loaned Ronnie $500 in Vegas a few years ago, same thing. I guess Ronnie is known for this sort of thing. Thats a shame. And for him to keep coming back to you Grady, it seems like Ronnie doesn't have any shame. Is he still an alcoholic? He got 86ed from a PH out here because of the way he was acting when he was drunk.

Hey it could be worse. Hollywood Jack beat Ferrell out of a lot of money and when it came time to pay Ferrell was broke. He gave Jack his saxaphone and his car as collateral. The saxaphone was broken and the car was stolen and Jack got arrested.

All right, but if you screw me this time I'm really, really going to be angry and I'm gonna turn your account over to a mob collector to get my money."
So now I'm $300 out of pocket and in less than an hour back he comes. He notices that, as usual, I'm threatening to win decent money at craps.
That's another story, which, if asked I'll relate. There are several good reasons why I win more than anyone else at dice.
"Since I'm getting $5,000 to gamble with tomorrow, why don't we each take a little of the other guy's action?," says Ronnie. This I firmly say no to but he hangs around anyway, probably because I'm the only chance he has to get more money. Finally I get rid of him by glaring at him with obvious distaste.
The next morning, at breakfast with R, I mention, "Ronnie said you were going to give him a thousand dollars and $5,000 more to gamble with." Well, dear readers, R breaks out into almost uncontrollable laughter and he proceeds to tell how Ronnie has screwed him.
I got home $4,700 winners at craps, which wasn't easy because of circumstances not germane to this story. So the trip was ok for me but there are many other places I'd rather have spent that $300.
I feel better getting that off my chest. If some in internet land want to light into me for this post, have at it. I don't care anymore. Thanks,
Grady

Here is the way you handle these type of characters if you don't want to get hit up anymore. When you see them approaching you have to know with certainty that they are going to give you a story and try to hit you up (again). Before they can start, you have to tell them how glad you are to see them because you are short on cash and can they pay you some of what they owe you. Stops them dead.

Unfortunately, a lot of us still really like these characters (because they are characters) and are willing to give them another "loan" knowing full well we are never going to get paid back.

MY,MY,MY I was always told if Your a sucker be a quite one!!!SHHHHHHHHHH Grady Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhnext people will call you a Knocker. He could-have got the $$$$ and paid you and had money left,Lol,lol Ronnie is Pure Entertainment.Worth thr Risk!!! After "ALL" He IS RONNIE ALLEN !!!

First of all to what ends do you tell a story like this, and second if you won 4700 and that's a big IF then why bring it up? maybe Karma of the loan helped in the craps score. Maybe instead of having a big ego you should have told him you didn't have $300. Maybe you'd be smarter and learn from the past and just say "sorry you've already burned that bridge".
All in all I like you G but your story just screams "I'm a big Dumb Dumb" and I somehow doubt that was your intent.

Jim

Jimbob, All pool players/gamblers have been busted at some point and asked for a little help to get in action. It's a little easier to give the money away when you've been tapped out yourself before. Nobody gives money away expecting to be paid back, they hope to be paid back 1/5 of what's been given away. Hell, even a beer or two down the line would work, which I'm sure RA is good for. He lives the (Miller) High Life.

What I would like to see out of RA before his time, take one of the great younger players under his wing (like Hubert Cokes did for Varner) and teach him the special "one hOle" that only Ronnie new. His style of play in one hOle was as special as Efren's style of play period. I just wonder who would be able to play in the air, bank and read the whole rack as "only" RA could, it'll be a sad day when his type game is gone. Without straight pool I wonder if its possible to see his "whole rack movement" style from the players in the future.

Interesting that you mention that. I talked a while back with a guy who used to own a pool room here and went to Johnston City many times. He told me he saw Ronnie Allen playing a shortstop one handed air one pocket and the shortshop didn't stand a chance.

If there was a line to get paid by R.A., it would stretch from Vegas to L.A.
6 months ago he made a move on me with a cocamemi story.I told him that he is very old and can`t make a ball anymore. He felt insulted and walked away from with a dirty look on his face. That is what exactly I wanted.
Since you and Grady knew him closely for many years ,I believe ,you can`t refuse and at the end yield to the pressure. In my case I and RA were not friends, ran into each other only few times.First time I ran into him was nearly 10 years ago in Olathe,KS at shooters. He made a move on me.I told him that he is wasting his breath & time and he can try that move on some body else.He sneered at me and walked away.

Great story Grady & sorry, but you know you're not alone.

Ronnie must be one of the, if not thee, best "pinchers" of all time. I have a friend that used to run w/Ronnie at pool & the track back in the day. Every time Ronnie sees him he pinches him for $50 or $100. Like Grady, he started talking to me about never getting paid back & why do I do it? I guess it's just RA tax. But it continues and everyone's OK with it. Now for the story & why I think RA may be the best ever:

My friend & I have a mutual friend who loves to be around pool and good players although he doesn't play that well himself. He is a very nice, generous & unsuspecting person. One day Ronnie pulled the $300 check for cash scam on him and of course it bounced. Once my friend learned of this he immediately told Ronnie that if he didn't make it right, and never pinch him again, he would never give him another nickel. And he meant it! One year later I asked if RA made the bounced check right and his reply was: well, no. In fact Ronnie's got him for about $3500-$4000 by now and I'm still donating. Our mutual friend knows that he's getting screwed but really likes hanging with the great one when it comes to: one-pocket & pinching.

Losers

I never loan money to a gambler..I will loan money to a moneyplayer though.. What makes a guy like Ronnie think he is better then the rest of us and just because he is "RA" were should be honored to loan (give) him money..I dont think so..Bill Cress frequents the pool halls in Portland an i have given him a few bucks..The key word is "give".. I work for my money and if you dont give me the respect to pay me back on a loan then shame on you...The world is full of Ronnie's..We just have to tread softly...
