Why not?

We have the "clap" thread, the "confessional" thread, and the "bad pro handicap" threads going so why not the "mandatory stupid nickname" thread?

Where I grew up, we had "Frenchy" because he was French, we had "The Hat" because he always wore a hat, and "Spanky" was built like Spanky from Our Gang - always a reason.

So why all the nicknames in pool, especially the women? Some of them seem as though they "had" to pick one and all the good ones were taken.

"The Irish Invader": invaded by an alien from Ireland? "The Duchess of Doom": scary, spooky, royalty? "The Sledgehammer": good break, but by no means earthshattering.

Are the players forced into picking a nickname? Or are they assigned?

No disrespect to any players, only to some of their nicknames.

If a player doesnt have one, the WPBA seems to assign them. Sometimes a player gives themselves one. Ive never heard anyone but the Gremlin refer to Sarah Ellerby as 'Velvet' but her press releases are calling her that now. IMHO it doesn't fit well at all.

The worst nickname though has to be IMHO 'The Oyster'. (non WPBA)

I think Vivian Villareal's is appropriate, 'The Texas Tornado', she is a bit of a whirling dervish...lol.

Ewa Laurence's is very appropriate, 'The Striking Viking'.

But I agree, some just don't seem to fit at all.

the wpba's got the worse nicknames and they do feel 'assigned'. nicknames should be easy, usually one word, and roll off the tongue. they instead give you tongue twisters.
 
I've been thinking about this same topic for a couple week ever since i read a article about Reno or something, and every player they mention'd they put thier nickname in BOLD capped letters, Even guys I'd never heard of.

Now some guys and girls have Excellent nicknames that fit them well. Like: Ewa's " the striking viking "

Efrain's " bata " "the magician" I dont know what "bata" means but oh well

Bustamante's "django" same thing i heard what it ment once but forgot, but he's also had the nickname for many many years.

Archers "scorpion" very kewl

Rodney "the rocket" morris kewl but there is only one true "rocket"

Now for some of them I dont understand.

"Marvelous" Marlon Manalo? before the IPT came around i dont think i had heard of him so what makes him so Marvelous??????

Ramil "Bebeng" Gallego please explain this one

Shaun "get some" Wilkie what is he trying to get some of?

Earl " the pearl " I would think this is to mean he is a gem of a pool player but i still do not see how it fits him.

Helena Thornfeldts "sledgehammer" ok, yea she has a decent break, but i think i break harder than her, so am I the new "sledgehammer"?

Also why does it seem that most Fillipino players all have nicknames?
 
A lot of folks (especially Freddy Gardner) call me "The Crumbler" because I have a tendency to mess up a perfectly runnable rack when I'm tired or just not on my game. :D

"Toothpick" is my other nickname, after quitting smoking I had a toothpick in my mouth constantly cause I use to smoke while playing. So; yeah!
 
The 800lb gorilla in the room has to be "kid delicous", or the "love sponge" I mean come on.....were I to have a nickname like this I wouldn't be able to show my face at a match......:rolleyes:

Seriously though... those names are kind of rediculous. I'm so glad my bar hasn't tagged me with a name yet. If they did it would probably be some inside joke like "Sputnik" or something from my bad habit of launching balls off the table on my breaks...
 
the nickname's the wpba have assigned are like wwe nicknames aren't they?

let's rename them all.

buxom banger has my vote.

"Bata" means kid. I think this was a way of distinguishing our famous pool champion from an older Efren Reyes who frequented the same room in his youth.
 
Lets not forget Shannon "The Cannon" Daulton, Earl "The Pearl" Strickland and "King James" Rempe....
