OK, What Do I Do Now (Long Winded)

A few months ago, there was a Joss 9 Ball stop in Syracuse, NY. Only an hour away. I'll give it a shot. Won a tournament there a month or so ago. Lets see what happens. Walk in the front door and there is Dennis Hatch. Oh no, not him. Hey, he is only human. Wow, draw him first round. A couple of nine balls on the break. A couple of rack runs from the break. Yeh, I got him 4 - 0! Hey, I broke dry. Why is the score now 5 - 4 his favor? Think I made him mad! Not a good sign. 9 - 6. Had my chances. Memo to self. Don't make him mad.

Fast forward a month or two. My home room in Rochester. There he is again. Dennis? First round. Again? Got him 7 - 6. Damn those dry breaks! Aha. I'm breaking on the hill. Make a ball. No shot. Push out to where he can't pass the shot. Yes, he takes it and "accidentally" makes a ball. Got him! He's got a tough kick. Nines nearly hanging. How the hell did the nine go in? Oh well, next time. Several rounds later, I look at the board. I got to play him again. This time for 5 / 6. How did he get on the one loss side? Know he's mad now. Remember winning the flip and breaking the first rack. After that, it was just a blur. 7 - 0! Second memo to self. Don't make him mad! He just plays better.

Another month goes by. Back in Rochester. Another event. There's Dennis again. This time I have to play him for the "Hot Seat". Why is he still mad at me? 9 - 2. This is rediculous!

Off to Amsterdam, NY. Main Street Billiards. One of my favorite rooms. Gotta play Dennis and for the "hot seat" again. Got him 7 - 6. Another dry break? 9 - 7 him. Boy am I getting tired of this. Get to the finals. Had a great idea:idea:. Dennis, my two friends, Guido and Vito want to talk to you. His reaction? Only two? Better make it five or six! Think I made him mad again:thud:. This time 9 - 6. I'm really getting tired of losing to this guy.

Anyone got an idea of what I should do now? OK, it was just a rhetorical question anyway. Dennis, my hat is off to you (wait, I don't wear one). Seriously, watching Dennis at the table is poetry in motion. I've dreamt of controlling my cue ball like him. His shot making is incredible. What confidence! Wish I could just consider these losses as cheap lessons. I've got to do somthing. Just don't know what! Any suggestions?

Lyn, the fact that you keep running into Dennis who "rules" the Joss Tour indicates that you are a helluva player! Nice shooting sir.

Ask if you can buy him a coke and drop a ruffy in it...

It takes a MAN to beat Hatch. No need to brag any further, just change your name to "James Bond"

Making some of the matches competitive would make me a very happy man.....at first. I suggest making him very very mad. I suggest playing lock up safeties on every shot no matter how easy the shot is. If you lose again....just remember you played a close match with Mosconi Cup standout Dennis Hatch.

Lyn, you must have been playing some great pool my friend! What did Dennis do that you can learn from and do yourself?

Lyn

I've seen Lyn play many sets in the Cny tournaments & Joss ( he is one of my favorites to buy in calcuttas) and always does well -Lyn is a great player and will beat Hatch one of these times- Dry breaks kill. Best of Luck Lyn hope to see you at the Stone!

This is one crazy coincidence!

There was a period over approx 3 months where everytime I turned around I was meeting Dennis Hatch in either a final or hot seat match. I, unlike you, however, managed to beat him in two of the matches and I went on to take those tourneys down.

Eventually, my doctor prescribed a different sleep medicine for me and those dreams disappeared. :D

It must be nice to get into those situations when you're awake. Nice going, Lyn. And keep gunning for him.

Best,
Brian kc

What do you do ? Beat his a$$ lol
If you are playing that close to him , you will catch the rolls and beat him
Eventually . He will stumble sooner or later .
Good Luck and good shooting

Roll over and play dead :p
Don't poke the bear :D

Keep pluggin away - just think of the confidence builder when you do finally take him out - and Mr. Hatch is NEVER an easy out.

Looking forward to hearing all about the victory!

Great shooting! I think you need to work on that break or maybe improve your sharking techniques. Have you tried to tush hog him a little before the match? Just some suggestions. :duck:

Guys,

In all my years of playing (over 50), I've only faced one other player who dominated me (and most everyone else) the way Dennis has. In the seventy's and early eighty's, Mike Sigel played out of Ridge Billiards (now closed) in Rochester. There is so much alike between the two of these giants. Incredible natural ability. Absolute confidence. Knowing they can make any shot that comes up AND playing that shot for the cheese! There is a difference.

This is going to sound strange but it was an honor to lose to a player of his caliber. To realize the difference in levels of ability is and was, sobering. Even on my best day, he is at least two levels above my game. To the people who voted Dennis onto the Mosconi Cup team, I salute you. He deserves the honor:bow-down:!

Now about that knee capping.........

Lyn

You can wet your thumb and rub it across his tip when he isn't looking. If you get caught, ask him if he wants to 'step outside'. If he does, hope like hell that he goes first and you can lock the door on him. Now, this is the important part: be sure you are on the opposite side of the door.

Dennis is top-level player, for sure! 9b is a baby game for him!
