Old video players

In the Action room there is some woofing of JB and Bobby Cotton. Hell, I had never heard of Bobby Cotton so I go to my best friend YOUTUBE and look him up and found some old videos of him.

Not picking on him, but IMO, he isn't even shortstop speed. I hear about how great these old players are/were and maybe because I am seeing them at the end of their careers verses current players it isn't apples and apples.

It just seems like Earl, SVB and many others of the current players are about 100 times stronger than these older players in the old videos.

So now my question, is there any old videos of these older players when they played awesome?

No disrespect intended, are the new guys just sooooo much better?

I'd like to see this too. So far I've only saw the old players playing 14.1 on bucket pocket tables. Johnnyt

Like many players from pool's golden years, Bobby liked to travel under the radar, which may be why there is not a lot of video or film. We live in a digital age today, but back then, not so much.

He was indeed a strong player and was house pro at a California pool room, the name of which escapes me. Keith told me about him and said he was tough action. If I can garner a story from Keith later about him, I will post it in this thread. :p

He's definitely not a shortstop. From what I have been told, I'd put him in the same category as Vern Elliott, one of pool's unsung heroes who by choice liked it that way.

The thread involving JB is with Bobby Chamberlain.

It's actually that both things are correct... you're probably underclocking these older under-the-radar pros.
But even if you knew exactly how good they are, Earl and SVB etc. are a couple of gears above.
I guess what you'd call the difference between a pro vs. a top pro.

Bobby Cotton has some pretty tall claims in his book, like running 10-packs or something,
but it sounds like most of that was on a barbox (which is still very strong).

The guy in the thread with JB, Bobby Chamberlain, is a straight pool specialist, a 300 ball runner.
I don't know how he plays 9b but I think he'd need to spot any shortstop-or-below player.

Luckily there is a video of Bobby Chamberlain playing in the 9 ball Virginia State Championships. Again, he didn't look very strong, and certainly less than what I would expect from a 300 ball runner. I am not saying I would stand a chance, but he is talking about playing Chris Bartrum and I think Chris is a couple steps better.

Thanks to Youtube, I can look a lot of folks up. I get to see their face and how they play.

C'mon Creedo. That's some weak sauce right there. Running 10+ packs are not much of an achievement these days. Remember the poll a couple of months ago that showed that AZB land is full of stone cold champions that run 10 packs like water. Cotton can't possibly fade action from an AZB'er!

Just checked it out... boy that was a rough showing from Bobby. He's capable of much more than that.
He looked like me on league night haha... not like him to just keep hooking himself playing shape.
However given what I've seen of chris and knowing his track record, I agree bobby's the underdog playing even 9 or 10b. Maybe he can coax him into some 14.1 :P

cotton was a very good player

As someone Bobby Cotton's age I can assure you Bobby was a very good player. You have a video that Cotton played bad on, we probably could find videos of all the great players playing bad. Don't ever think the players of the 50s, 60s era couldn't play well, guys like Marshall Carpenter played all games jam up and Marshall could still play well into his 80s. I staked TonynChohan against him in one of Marshall's gaf games and Tony didn't win a game, Marshall was 79 then.
