old yellow westinghouse micarta

What is it about this stuff?? A lot of people are praising it, how wonderful it is, how well it hits, how hard it is to find, and how expensive it is.

Is it only me or am I the only one that thinks it's ugly as hell and I wouldn't put it on one of my cues for love or money.

It's the only thing I have seen that is uglier than antler.

Besides everything else it has asbestos in it and is dangerous.

OK... now beat me up..... but that is how I feel..........

LOL

Agree, personally I do find it ugly as hell. I do not remember anyone who likes it saying so because they like the way it looks.

It's somewhat less ugly new (machined and polished), not sure that helps…

As to being dangerous to one's health, the flat-laminated paper Westinghouse Micarta that looks like a naturally-grown material and tends to turn a deep yellow with age has always (mostly, some doubt this) been reported to be asbestos-free - even so, sanding it etc., it may be wise to take precautions. Better safe than sorry. But as long as no particles are being inhaled, everyday life in general is more dangerous than touching to a piece of asbestos once in a while - again, if there is/were any in the Micarta those who praise it use.

What it sure is, is hazardous to one's wallet… Plus, if one hasn't used it before, one might not even like the hit and feel it provides - that's subjective, after all.

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Guess I'm the only one, but I actually like the aged look. Reminds me of a creamsicle.

finally

Finally a couple of people with enough in the sack to risk running the gauntlet of the forum with stating an opinion.

Thank you for your responses...

I too hate the look of the material but can not say how good it possibly plays as I have never experienced it myself.

Other additionally or possibly more ugly materials found in cues are the antler material along with the brown and or tan phenolic materials that you can see mesh or fading.

Ivory has always been my favorite ferrule material for the main reason that it stays so clean.

If anyone knows of a non Ivory material that stays as clean as Ivory I would surely like to hear about it.

Thanks

Kevin

I find antler and the tan phenolic that is supposed to be brown FAR more objectionable. I really don't mind the color of Micarta at all. To me, it has a aged and vintage look.

Perhaps that is because you are a venerable gentleman with a sense
of both style and history:).

Do you also find it ironic that Micarta was originally used as ferrules
ONLY because it aged and "yellowed" like real ivory.

Completing a minor hi-jack, I have some questions about Rambows.
