Omega/DPK Identification help.

Hi, this is my first post as I recently found this site and joined. I've been reading and learning a lot since I found this forum. Anyway, I bought this Omega/DPK from a friend of mine about 6 or so years ago. It was his daily player then mine, so it shows its usage. My question is about what year was this cue made (I'm guessing about mid to late 90s)? and basically anything you can tell me about this cue. I read about the identification numbers under the but cap, but mine has none. The only markings I can find is the number 31 on both shaft joint ends in pencil.

My 2nd question is if this cue is worth refinishing. I lost the original joint protectors for it a local pool hall a few years back so I'm using cuetec protectors. One shaft since the day I bought it has a vibration sound when screwed together so I suspect possibly a cracked shaft. It has a leather wrap, and you can see there are chips on the flared but end sleeve. It also has a hex head weight bolt as you can see. Given all that is wrong with this cue, is it worth refinishing? I'm keeping it either way as it is a great player with the other good shaft and I may just give it to my son. However, if it is worth refinishing, I may try and get an expert opinion on the suspect cracked shaft and see if it is repairable, or if not maybe get a new shaft made. Any and all comments are welcomed. Trying to figure out what my options are. My new player I just bought is a 1990 Predate Southwest which I'm starting to really like. Thanks for your help.

I'll be jealous of your son when he gets this cue!

As for authenticating it or refinishing it, you can try to contact DPK himself- he's still around- but my understanding is most people go through Ed Young now. Ed worked and studied under DPK, and still operates a shop. He'd be able to pinpoint the issue with the shaft too. You can get his information much easier.

IMO every custom cue is worth refinishing, especially if your son is gonna have this to play with.

Great cue!

IIRC BOADO pulled the OMEGA plug in 94+-.

Unless your son wants a shiny, new looking cue I'd LEAVE it as is.....will be an asset down the road.

Thanks guys. Keep the opinions and options coming. To be honest. I never realized how collectible cues can become. I sold my Sept, 1989 Richard Black to buy this Omega and now I regret selling it after learning about collectible cues. When I bought this cue I didn't even know what the DPK stood for. Needless to say, if I only knew I would have been much more careful with my cue. My son is only 5 so it will be a while before he actually gets to play with this one or any cue.

What about the 2nd shaft though? Should I leave it as is or attempt to get it repaired or get a new shaft made?

I asked Ed Young to make me a new shaft for my Bender sneaky pete. Due to several coincidental circumstances, the shaft wound up being made by DPK (!!). I would send the cue to Ed Young just to be checked out (& authenticated), see if the shaft is the problem, and see what he recommends. Very nice cue!
:p

I don't see any name or logo on this Q. How do you know that David built this Q?...JER
The piano key rings?
The acme pin and something else secretive can be seen in that weight bolt.

DAMN! That is one solid cue. Dead f'n nuts .

It's a Ugly Stick

Probably says so on it. If not you can tell from across the room what it is.
Very easily identifable for once, at a glance. It is the prettiest Ugly Stick I have ever seen. Is this a Ugly stick or a DPK or a DPK-Omega? I say Ugly Stick.

Hi Joey, I'm asking about the logo, because he may have an Omega Q, but all of the "Omega/ DPK" Qs that I have owned, sold or repaired had that lettering on the butt cap. Only the Qs that David worked on, at "Omega" were marked with the "DPK". Even that doesn't mean that he built it, only that he did SOME of the work on the Q. One of mine was built by Mike Bender & David did the inlays. It was marked "Omega/DPK". I was at the Omega shop about a dozen times & David was a NO SHOW most of the time, but the Qs still got made. Oh & by the way Mr. Meucci used the piano key rings in several of his Qs too. I hope this finds all of you in good health...JER

Just to add one more thing, the 3rd issue of the "Blue Book Of Pool Cues" says "Many South West cues are mistakenly believed to be Kersinbrock cues. Thus authentic Kersenbrock cues with provenance and original finish are most sought after." ...JER

@ first look I thought Rich Chudy until I saw the but cap shows you how many omega I have seen.

I say keep it as original as possible. I have a omega/dpk in similar condition and thought about it for a long time. After talking with other collectors I came to the conclusion of keeping it original.

K, thanks Jer.

Any one have contact info for Ed Young? Looks like I'm leaning toward just keeping it as it, but I'd like to get an authentication one way or the other just so I do know what I have. If it is a DPK made great. If it was made by Bender that good too. I do know it is an Omega as that is what it was sold to me as, and the guy I bought it from I trust as he was one of the top players in Hawaii and used to be ranked behind guys like Rodney Morris (Rocket Rod) and such in Hawaii.

I'm retiring this cue for the most part as I just got a 90 Southwest. Still waiting on my letter of authentication from Laurie that was written for my SW though. It exists, just hasn't been mailed too me yet.

I just started playing again a few months ago after laying off for about 2 years. Researching this forum and learning about cues has gotten me really excited about the game again. That is why I bought the Southwest. I think I'm going to start a small cue collection now:)
