Particularly in 1pocket and 'golf', the strongest players have an uncanny ability to play their shot and get the cb nearly welded to a cushion...alot.

Is this touch a gift, or can one learn to do this, if not already blessed with this skill?

Its a learned ability just like playing shape, well, it is kind of like playing shape. Maybe more of a mindset. Froze to a ball or a rail is one of the first things I was taught.

In one pock and golf its all about limiting the incoming players options, froze to a rail or ball does just that.

Its a touch thing, just like playing pinpoint position. It takes practice like anything else. Basic speed control practice drills work fine. Personally I have a tendency to play a several inches long when trying to glue the next guy to the rail, especially on shots where the cue ball is travelling nearly the length of the table. I simply pick a spot a few inches short of the rail and generally get them tight to the cushion. Comes up all the time in snooker where a safety can simply be leaving distance and the white on a cushion to take away the opposition being able to play with side spin and snooker you back. Its a very handy skill to have...ive yet to meet anyone who enjoys playing frozen to the cushion.

frustrates pretty much everyone

I have been both on the receiving end and giving end of on the cushion. Few of the young aggressive players can fail to get frustrated when every shot is trying to shoot whitey off the cushion. Most of us don't take it much better. The only defense against rail safeties is to be able to beat those safeties which is tough.

This is one of the reasons I have trouble with aim techniques....too mechanical.
If you keep trying to see the shot, you achieve the ability to do it.

See the shot, make it happen.

And you can't lock it up....conditions vary too much.

It is largely feel, but approaching the resting rail at an angle makes it far easier to freeze the cb.
