On The Road Again with Perfect Aim....

Thanks Gene. Through the years I got to watch them 2 guys dominate Oshkosh and Beloit. It would be great to see them two head to the dcc and do some damage! I know, something called life gets in the way...

I'm going to Ho Chunk and Beloit this weekend but

Feb 22 looks good for me. I'll pay your room and gas to play in Beloit. We can play long races or ahead sets. I would prefer ahead sets. Hank said he would take half your action. I prefer bartable but will be willing to play bigtable if I get enough notice. I dont care what the bet is but want to play for awhile. None of this losing one set and quiting. Hopefully y hat date works for you. Im sure Dave will give us a nice deal on table time and he can stream on any size table. Let me know, I might just try that thing they call practice.

Unfortunately we have the same thing.

Wed and Thursday I'll be at ho Chunk. Then it's off to Beloit to play on Sat.

Probably after those 4 days I will need some rest. Not action or long matches.

It might be the 60 year old thing. There's a reason that most 60 year olds are watching and not playing. I'm there so I understand. I just havn't given up on this physical age factor or smart enough to quit.

I had a 20 hour day yesterday of playing and driving. I feel kind of beat up today. More aches and pains than you can imagine. Need a couple of days rest for sure.

I'm going there with Lee Wehagen from Mn. I don't know if he could stay until Monday anyway so Sunday probably wouldn't be a go anyway.

The biggest problem here is I work all week trying to prepare to be able to play and teach on the weekends. This is my job.

Your job is during the week and the money just keeps coming. I've been there also.

Bad week at work you still get paid.

bad week at work and I go broke.

I need to be ready for my battles for sure. I'm shooting pretty good but against a player of your caliber I need to have my ducks. Sleep rest and feeling good.

It sounds like you are really doing good Gene. I still plan on taking your lessons. I'm still not sure when my wife and I will return to America. I'll let you know when we know. We'll be in America for 6 or 8 weeks, at leat=st thats the plan right now. Shoot well my friend.

Gene makes Bill Clinton look like an amateur when it comes to rationalizations and BS

Chirp Chirp...

Get your wings back and fly Hank and yourself a few miles to the south. Set on barbox and big table. Come on down and lets have some fun.

I sure wish I could there my friend...........

It sure would be fun to hang out with you, your dad and the rest of the Brickyard gang and of course play some pool.

I'm starting my next trip on the 1st of March.

But you never know which way the wind will blow.

I'll talk to Hank......

Good Luck.....

Gene , the weekend you are talking about is the 15th I said the 22nd. A full week later. Lee's schedule wouldn't be a conflict and you would have a week of rest. I'll be working all week so ill probably just be donating. Its a can't miss situation.

Off to HoChunk AND THEN TO bELOIT.......

Tomorrow will start the 5 day tour.

Lee Wehagen will be coming to Eau Claire Wed at noon and we will continue to Ho Chunk in the Dells.

8 ball on Wed and 9 ball on Thursday.

Ten it's off to Beloit to play in the $1000 added tourney at the Carom Room.

Between the 2 of us we should do pretty good overall.

This will be a good trip to see how I hold up on the road. Still bucking a few health issues.

Up up and away..........

Gene, I'll be at Ho-Chunk Friday night for the start of the team tournament. If you are still around let Jesse know and we will track you down. I was hoping to play the 9 ball tourney, but the schedule will not allow. GL, and thanks again for the lesson at the Brass Ring a while back, I think I might pull out the dvd and check it out again before this weekend. Tom

Good luck Geno

Have fun out on the road....good luck and maybe you'll run into Thelma & Louise in their Mustang

Draw for show, follow for dough

What a week and weekend..

It's obvious to me after this small road trip that I need to do some work.

More work on my health.

Lee drove from Minneapolis to Eau Claire. We left his car there and took the old van.

It was fun talking to Lee about the IPT and I was amazed at all the good things that Kevin Trudeax did for pool back then. It sounds like from Lee that the players were treated like kings.

We got into the room at about 5:00PM and Lee went down to see what was going on. I stayed in the room and tried to sleep.

The 9 ball started at 8:00. I played jam up and put Chad Vilmont in the losers bracket 7-3.

Then it was off to bed.

Got to bed in plenty of time to get enough sleep. Problem was Lee likes it cold in the room and I need it warm. At least 74*.

I woke up at 6:00AM just froze and the thermostat said it was 69*.

Not Lees fault. He;s just trying to be comfortable and I didn't stress the need for me to have it warner.

I was a wreck and played horrible the next day. I couldn't beat my sister.

Went back to the room and layed down. Got about 2 hours of rest but really never got to sleep.

Came back and played in the 8 ball and played flawless pretty much. What a difference the sleep and rest makes when your 60 years old or any age for that matter.

Lee and myself had to play at 1:00AM. I sweaked out a real nail biter 7-5 bit it could have very easily went the other way. Lees a great player but just hasn't been playing much.

Went back to the room and I had the temp set at 73* from when I came back from the nap.

Went to bed at about 3:00AM giving us about 8 hours to sleep. I woke up at 7:00AM froze. The temp was 70*. I just covered up my head and tried to go back to sleep. Never did.

Played a couple of matches and played pretty good but I knew my game was not just there. I played Jamie Bowman and we both played terrible. My terrible was worse putting me in the losers bracket.

I was drained. 2 days in a row without enough sleep. I went out on a couch in the hallway outside the ballroom and tried to sleep. Didn't really sleep but I got about 2 hours rest before my next match. I won 3 in a row to get back to Jamie Bowman.

The guy I beat just before this asked me if I wanted to bet $200 on my match with Jamie. I was tempted to ask him to bet more but didn't want to push it. Then I asked Lee if he wanted half just because we were together and I knew he didn't make anything yet. He said sure.

I beat Jamie 7-2 and he played pretty bad.

Then it was Chad Vilmont and myself in the final.

I got ahead 4-1 playing pretty flawless and went 3 rails for shape on the 8 ball and somehow ended up hooked. I didn't need to do that but it seemed pretty simple at the time. I could have just killed the cue ball and popped the 8 ball in the other side.

Now it's 4-2 instead of 5-1. Big swing. I break dry the next rack. Chad runs out. Then he breaks and runs out and it's 4-4.

I got ahead 6-4 with my break. I'm on the hill. I break and the balls are all out in the open except for one ball. It's froze on another ball but looks like I can shoot it up in the corner at the other end of the table.

I could have broke it loose with the shot I got shape on it but didn't.

I shot the ball and it had no chance to go. Chad had an easy run out with nothing in the way to win the 8 ball also. He won the 9 ball earlier.

Now the plan was to go to Beloit to the carom room to play in their $1000 added 10 ball tourney. Lee decided he had enough and headed back to Eau Claire so if was off to Beloit by myself.

I got a room at the Rodeway Inn and it was great. The room was cold so I turned on the heat and hauled in my stuff.

Got to bed at 3:00AM and should have had plenty of time to sleep but woke up at 8:00AM and never really got back to sleep. I know this isn't going to be good.

Lost my second match and played terrible. Went over to a table and kind of layed my head down and rested, struggling through my next 4 matches.

Played Ike Reynolds and won 7-2 I think and then I had to play Larry Nevel.

He pulled out ahead of me 4-2. Pretty soon I'm on the hill 7-5. Looking pretty good.

Then it hit. At the end of Ike Reynolds match I was starved and ordered some chicken tacos. There was some salsa and sour cream with it. I felt real weak and tired. Checked my bllod sugar and it was over 200. Usually I make chicken sandwiches on rye bread so I know the carb content.

The combination of not enough sleep and eating to many carbs destroyed me. I was weak and shaky and felt like my legs weighed 200 pounds each. I made a fist with both hands and they just hurt.

I'm in trouble. I missed getting out 3 times. Larry would be the first to say he didn't beat me. It looked more like a donation.

Got my money and made it to the car. I could hardly raise my hands up top the steering wheel to drive.

Now I had a 4 hour drive to make back to Eau Claire

Juggling being diabetic and taking seizure meds is kind of tricky but I got my first experience with throwing in not enough sleep for 3 days in a row.

Throw in being 60 years old and it's tough to even get through a 2 day tourney. Endurance is a big factor. Young guys even get wore out at these.

It's no good.

Part of the problem is I've gained back about 12 lbs back in the last 2 months. The weight has to go. My blood sugar is going too high. I don't want to go back on the meds for diabetics because they make you weak and shaky from the bad side effects.

Got back to Eau Claire and slept only 5 hours. Pretty wore out but the biggest problem is I have no consistent sleep patterns for the last 4 or 5 days. Kind of like the person that switches from the day shift to the night shift. They feel like crap until they get adjusted.

I share these things with AZer's on this thread because there are so many diabetics out there. Also there are players that have seizures and still try to play regardless of all the side effects the meds have.

Also there are many player that are in the 60 year old range that can relate to trying to play at a higher level.

Many players out there have so many disabilities and they just keep on playing. Not to mention being over 60.

If your 20 30 40 or even 50 these may just sound like excuses for losing. It is what it is.

But if you have some sort of disease or disability that you have to overcome you understand for sure and can relate.

When I'm out there teaching around the country and I see all the players around the country that really enjoy the game there are usually 4 or 5 players that stand out for sure.

One girl was legally blind, kids with cancer, players in their 70's and 80's and other disabilities to numerous to mention.

I'm just trying to get it right for myself to compete on a higher level and stay consistent. It might be impossible for me considering things I got going on. But just like all of these silent heros out there that I have met I just keep trying and trying and sharing and sharing.

But one thing is for sure. I'm still going to try and help players everywhere I can play better than ever before.

Now. Back to work. Eating right, sleeping right and lots of practice and excersize.

This weekend really showed me what I need to work on to get back out there.

For me pool is a job. Am I getting rich? Not really. Am I broke? Not really.

Am I having fun,

YES YES YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice shooting, Chads a beast. I remember some years ago he used to gamble in arm wrestling as well. Dude had some monster veined forearms and I never saw him lose (he had good technique as well). We must have been bored betting on arm wrestling and pool lol.

Second day back, time to get on track...

Just like in the old days I used to go on the road for about a month or 2 and then come back to Eau Claire, Wi and work out at the YMCA for about a month to get back in shape.

This worked out pretty good. I'd usually gain about 10 lbs and then work out losing the weight accidentally by getting back in top pool form.

After 3 days of not getting enough sleep at 3 tournys I finally got 8 hours of sleep. Need to make that a regular thing also. 8 hours of sleep.

I'm going to start by shoveling the snow. About 6 inches so far it looks like. 2 car driveway and a corner lot gives me allot of snow to shovel.

Then it's off to the Y.

Might not play in a tourney this weekend. Maybe a small local one but my focus needs to be getting things right mentally and physically.

In the old days I used to work out like a mad man to get in shape. At 60 I need to be a little careful. Need to do enough but not too much.

Need to build the body and be careful not to bust it down.

Mt little 3 day run showed me what I need to do.

Now I just need to do it.

One man sold the van and got a little car. Getting prepared to go on the road again.....

Electric blankets are quite cheap. You're an experienced road guy, seems like you'd have seen these things in the past and would have taken reasonable steps to address them. The other alternative is to go to the front desk and ask for additional blankets.

You're 60 and a diabetic Gene. It's not likely that you're going to sustain the "perfect level" for any long period of time. That sucks but it is what it is. Rather than bemoan that situation, I would think you should just accept it and take whatever steps you can to take advantage of the peaks and minimize the dips. It's too bad, you're an excellent player. Unfortunately, there are lots of other excellent players out there who are younger and don't suffer from physical maladies.

Your so right......

I've used an electric blanket and felt like a rag when I woke up.

I had surgery back in 86 on my ear. They took the bone out around the ear. Without that bone there the cold goes right into where it shouldn't. I where ear muffs to keep this area warm. Not much I can do about it. Just do the best I can do. I usually take a small heater with a thermostat on it so I don't have to depend on some of these heating systems in these motels.

This little trip reminds me why I travel alone. No matter how careful 2 people are when they are sleeping in the room getting woke up here or there is tough when you need to perform at a peak level the next day. Late in the tournament is where you really need to perform because the best players are still there. This is where that one hour more of sleep really makes the difference.

I can't imagine someone watching me have a seizure and trying to get back to sleep?

But like you said it is what it is. Just need to do the best I can do.

Each time I get through a tournament and feel great I'm so thankful. It doesn't even matter if I win. Just thankful I feel good.

Thanks for the input my friend......

I had a chance to speak to Gene last night and learn some about PerfectAim. Very cool.
It was very helpful.
Thank you for taking the time to show and explain somethings for me. I plan to use it more. I am also looking forward to learning more.
Thanks.
