Once again Earl shows his lack of class, what a disgrace

When Early is on his hot streak, he is unstoppable. But his mental game is lacking. He should have had a coach for his mental side. He has the physical part of the game just as good or better than anyone else. The game is just about too easy for him.

But, from what I learned growing up, a true champion is graceful winning and losing. Being graceful at losing can change a lot about how people think about you.

earl

this was payback time for Earl.Remember in a match a few years ago ,playing charlie, earl fouled caught on tape and said the ref didnt see it so it didnt count..What a piece of work he is..

Agreed. The guy is a classless jerk who acts like he is entitled to win his matches. He doesnt even play that good anymore and for them to put him on the Mosconi Cup team just to show his ass is a disgrace. Its amazing that whoever is in charge condones that behavior. He should have to play way better than everyone else to be considered for that team and his behavior should be considered a detriment to him, not a bonus. Can you imagine having that donkey as your teammate? Somebody should just smack his ass and maybe he will straighten up.

You Sir have spoken the truth!

Catch 22

I also see all of the posts about a possible medical condition. If he truly needs the meds then he should see someone and take them. I feel sorry for those experiencing some type of behavior disorder, but I don't feel sorry for the ones that choose not to help themselves.

Not one in a hundred can compete on a world class level for whatever reason. Add medications and not one in ten thousand can compete on a world class level. It has been reported that Earl has tried to get help. I strongly suspect that he found out the same thing I and many others have found, medications, almost any kind of medications, takes the competitive edge off. You need to be focused, mentally alert, and with strong hand/eye coordination to compete. I found that even the beta blockers for my blood pressure took enough of the edge off that I couldn't compete well. Another innocent seeming medication for the blood pressure and triglycerides affects eyesight.

Dead easy to say just take medication but when the medication makes it where you can't earn a living then that makes it damned hard to actually do.

Dead On!

His retort was always this: Show me a loser who likes to lose, and I'll show you a loser.

I don't know why, but that quote reminds me of this thread! :p

JAM,

I cut out all the nice things about Terry, we say too many nice things about him! :D :D :D

No surprise at all K is dead accurate in his statement. I try to go through the motions of being a gentleman after a loss, with a minute or two's notice I can even be sincere about my words but when I suffer a significant loss I am on fire inside and very few losses aren't significant. There are a handful of quotes about losing I like although I don't remember who gets credit for saying them first.

"All it takes to be a good loser is practice!"

"Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser!"

I don't want to learn how to be a good loser, I want to learn how to be a gracious winner! I'll continue to go through the motions when I lose but I fully understand the people who aren't able to pull things together when they get a mike stuck in their faces a few seconds after a tough loss.

Seems like eye witnesses are coming forward to say that Earl just bumped a ball conceding too, hardly raking the balls although raking the balls would not have been a big deal depending on table layout.

His entry is paid by Barry Behrman. All past US Open champions get their entries FREE. Some people would defend Earl if he killed someone. I don't get it. I don't care how many times he's been player of the year or how many times he has won the US Open .. it doesn't give him the right to act like a spoiled child when things don't go his way.
Charlie Williams was whipping Earl's ass in that match. That's why when he got down 10-7 and had ball in hand and couldn't get out.. he pulled his same old tired ass routine . HE QUIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's his entry money let him do what he wants with it.

This reminds me of what Patrick Swayze (bless his soul) was saying about the cancer meds he wouldn't take while filming his last work, Beast. He said he wouldn't take the meds while filming because they took the edge off and he needed to be on the edge (mentally sharp) to perform.

People are too quick to judge these days. Walk a mile in somebody's shoes before you pass judgment on them!! As for Earl, he's still the greatest tournament 9-ball player in my book and I hope he conquers his demons.

C'mon now, who would be left standing if we got all the weirdos out of the game?

I for one prefer the extreme on the side of Earl than the extreme on the side of Ralf.

And the Mosconi Cup comments, I think your comments and anger should be directed towards Matchroom Sports, who pretty much dictate that Earl remains on the team, as far as I know (which ain't far).

I don't think the guy is classless - he obviously has mental illness. I wasn't there but I'm positive there were likely people in the crowd who poked the tiger through the cage and a meltdown ensued.

Every time I've seen Earl act like an ass-- someone in the crowd instigated him in the middle of a match. Should he just be classy and ignore it? Sure... but, I don't think he's mentally able to--- it's like starting an avalanche--- once it starts, there's no stopping it.

My mother was the same way for YEARS until they got her meds right. We could be sitting down in a restaurant and if she overheard something she didn't like, she'd lean into the other table and tell them ALL about it until a fight broke out.

So, I guess people are real quick to call him classless and an ass--- I just see a gifted player who isn't well mentally. We either have someone bipolar in our families (so we understand) or we don't. It is what it is.

I totally agree!!! Can you imagine living with what is going on inside his mind day in and day out, then to over come the barbs under the pressure of him trying to give his all? I have talked to Earl and he does know he is the cause of the barbs, but he doesn't seem to have control over what comes out.
Hopefully a friend can help him and get him to a doctor who can help.
Listening to his speech at the HOF in 2006 all I can say is he REALLY wants to be different, very sad indeed.

You got my prayers Earl

Nice post Robin. I don't think anyone here wishes anything bad on Earl and I'm sure everyone pulls for him to get the help he needs. He is a great champion and can still dab it on the pool table.

However, should his conduct be ignored because he's a former champion or because it is perhaps due to medical reasons? What would happen if someone acted like he does on the WPBA Tour?

Well, if you are talking behavior patterns, it's a self fulfilling prophecy.

Earl loses his cool and goes nuclear, and lashes out at a fan and everyone around him due to a fan messing with him.
The fans in turn, realize they have some power to affect this guy.
The fans then go looking for some cheap entertainment because they are buttwads or their ego got hurt when Earl justifiably yelled at them, and they fully enjoy annoying him to the point where he melts down and lashes out again.

Personally, having had people that know full well that i hate them talking ABOUT my match DURING my match like they are on a P.A system, i can understand where Earl is coming from.

I've had my fair share of turning around and asking them to STF UP!, and when they get irritated, i have mentioned how i am PAYING good money to play in the tournament, and how if they want to be azzwipes, how they could reimburse me my entry fee, and talk as much as they F-in want.

Did that ever help the situation?
Sometimes, sometimes not, but most of the time, it then turned into deliberate action on their part because they had the IQ of a pumpkin and would rather get their jollies ruining it for someone competing then just siting there and enjoying the pool they are watching.

Does Earl need some help?
I would think that after YEARS of this whole process going on, that yes, because it's no longer something he is in full control of, but instead, an automatic response/habituation after years of the exact same thing going down time after time.
He is for all intensive purposes, a big button that can be pushed by anyone willing to do so.

Do i think that the douchbag fans who have no life and make the pilgrimage to the U.S. Open every year with the sole intent of F-ing with a player to get their rocks off, should be allowed in the venue? ABSOLUTELY NOT!
GET THEM OUT OF THERE!!!!

If someone in the stands opens their mouth trying to mess with someone, toss them out.
If no one in the stands is willing to finger they guilty party, TOSS THE WHOLE SECTION OUT!
I don't care.
Honestly, idiots like this are the reason i don't go to the U.S. Open anymore.
Every year i ever went, these guys were in full force.
A little too much beer, a little too much ego, and a LOT of stupidity, towards a LOT of players that weren't their own personal favorites.

At some point this crap has got to stop, and unfortunately, if i had to choose between the players, and the fans, the fans who do this can just drop dead cause they aren't fans, they are idiots.

Toss them out, and put them on the black list for future events.

I would LOVE to see a tournament held in a sound proof chamber with no fans around to see how the players react.
I'd be willing to bet that the Earl meltdowns would almost cease to exist, bad play or not.

I wonder if any one else has seen the irony in this thread?? I have to admit, it gave me a chuckle.;) So many so quick to blame Earl for ruining pool. How they are so sick of seeing him act like an immature jerk. How they are sick of hearing him whine about not getting his way. (winning, in his case) About how he should be banned because his behaviour isn't helping pool, but instead is hurting pool.

Yet, here, in the greatest pool forum available, which is supposed to offer information about playing the game, instruction, where to play, what's happening on the pool scene, ect., we have to have a number of threads whining about the whiners. Now, I am whining about whining about whining!

Doesn't anyone realize that you are doing the same thing to the forums that you accuse Earl of doing to the game??? Maybe a few of you need to mature and realize that not everyone is going to act exactly like you want them to.

I wasn't able to afford the PPV this time around. So, I didn't get to see the matches. I had to rely on what is on here to learn about them. Yet, after a whole week, All I've seen is updates on who is beating who, and how bad Earl is. With ONE exception- one poster actually talked about a great shot he saw. (even though it was a slop shot)

The greatest pool forum going, and not a single cuetable diagram about layouts, no discussion about how to play the game, nothing. Oh... a few about what cue which guy is using now. Yep, that really helps.;)

Maybe some of you need to start looking in a mirror a little more closely. This week could have been fantastic for the forum. Instead, the probably longest thread is a bashing thread. Very, very dissapointed. I guess I'll end my whining about the whining about the whining now.

Neil, I'm sorry this US Open week and the forums have been bad for you. It has been a great week for the scores of people that have interacted in the action forum and followed the tourney closely in the main forum.

I started this thread not to whine about Earl but only to kind of quantify my feelings about what I was witnessing and hearing through the commentators on the ppv. It was a sad scene to witness. Everyone that witnessed the incident either live at the open, or on the ppv pretty much share the same sentiments, that Earl was in fact out of line. Some to a harsher degree, some to a lesser degree. And he does it ALL OF THE TIME.

If this isn't the correct forum to comment on the US Open and all of it's happenings then I don't know what is. As you said, this is the biggest Billiards forum on Earth and you would expect that the biggest tourney in the US would get the most coverage, good or bad. Much like when Galveston was going on that was the topic of choice for the week.

To show my sympathy for the bad time you've had on the forums during the Open I would like to buy you the Final Day PPV coverage. Please PM me your paypal address and I will send you the money to cover the accu-stats coverage. I think you will enjoy the ppv and interacting in the chat room.

Dear Mr. Vet,
GET OVER YOURSELF!

What did he do? The man plays like a champ and focuses all his emotions into winning. He does not get the results he expected and tilts out for a couple of seconds. He didn't hit anyone in the crowd. He didn't mouth off his opponent or ref etc.

Have you ever tried to console someone who wasn't ready? The man played great and came up short. He knows he has limited time to his next and possibly last one. Ever noticed why most greats stay on longer than most of us believe they should? It's because the fire burns in them hyper-hot. It's the missing ingredient above talent that makes them heads and shoulders better than their piers. Some just bottle it up better than others.

IMO, Corvette gets his jollies pushing other people down a flight of stairs (Earl, in this case). For proof of that, one need look no further than Corvette's signature line: "Some people are like slinkies..Not really good for anything, but they bring a smile to your face when you push one down a flight of stairs." :p

We all know that Earl has problems but it's appalling when people put him under the microscope, psychoanalyze his every behavior, and completely trash his reputation on an Internet forum full of armchair quarterbacks and rail birds.

Dear Mr. Nick,

He acted like an ass, that's what he did. In front of an audience, and he does it very often. No he didn't hit anyone and yes he did mouth off to his opponent, the refs, and several others as outlined by eye witnesses in the thread.

As for your comments about me getting over myself, when did the thread become about me?

Sincerely,
Corvette

I've gotten to spend just a little time with Earl lately, mostly in passing or at the hall.

Funny... I get there Wed, pull up and he's outside his room with nuthin but shorts on. I look inside his room and he's got this weight bench in there, that he claim he does 500 situps a day on. The room looks like a tornado hit it. Anyway, he starts talking about things that I feel appropriate stay in confidence. Much of what he says has merit, albeit some perhaps should be taken with a grain of salt. Like how rubbing a sweaty palm or talc along a rail is done deliberately to gaff... The tendencies of specific players or even nationalities in certain instances, that are "tactics". etc, etc..

I saw his matches from Wednes thru to his knock-out by Charlie Williams. The match against Lee Van was difficult to watch. He was sharked from jump street by a number of Fillipino supporters. They yelled extraordinarily loud after the first rack was won by LVC, and often after that. It got to Earl... bad... IMO it was a move to "get him first". I wish he'd handled better, it wasn't a good scene.

I'm conflicted on this. I do not approve of much of Earl's antics but I'm not going to damn the man either. But, this is pool, and not figure skating. Still, I wouldn't want to be on the other side of the table trying to fade his chirping.

BTW, who had the longest "package" at the tourney? From what I know, twas Earl on Monday, a sixer.
