One Pocket Cue??

I was just curious, does anyone use certain cues for certain games? For instance, I have an old Joss sneaky thats full 13mm with a Moori Hard tip that plays killer nine-ball and banks, but I prefer playing one pocket with my Scruggs with a super stiff 12.2mm shaft with a water buffalo tip. I can play nine ball just as well with my Scruggs, but for some reason, I prefer the Joss sneaky for that. I was just wondering if anyone else has a special cue for certain games.

me personally I use the same cue for everything and I think most people do.. the only exception I can think of is possibly 3 cushion... but I have very little experience with that so I can't say for sure..

The owner of the pool hall I frequent plays with two different cues all the time. For each particular shot he goes and gets the one he wants. He mostly plays one pocket and he will see a shot and got pick up the other stick if thats the one he feels does better with that shot. One is some custom and the other is a Meucci.

I shoot all pool games and carom (rare these days) with the same cue, which is a carom cue. For snooker, a snooker cue. When switching between cues and shafts my main concern is whether there's a significant difference in deflection between cues.

I'd add this question: when playing different games, does anyone modify their stance (successfully)?

Interesting point. I usually end up playing with my old Joss, just because its what Ive been playing with the most lately. I think it is highly possible that it is all in my head. I am certain, however, that my trusty old stiff hitting Scruggs has more deflection than the Joss.

The Scruggs has more deflection? Interesting, I wouldn't have guessed that.

A few years ago I bought a Predator 314 for my Scruggs sneaky Pete, and I really couldn't tell much of a difference in terms of deflection whether I used the Scruggs shaft or the Predator shaft.

I have a Meucci PP1 with a black dot that I use for a saturday 9 ball tourney that seems to work specially well for me on a 9 foot table.

What other cues do you use? Will you switch to a different cue if you play 9-ball on a 7- or 8-footer, or if you play 8-ball, 1P, straight, or some other game?

I use one cue for all games I play except Billiards. I've played Snooker with the smallest diameter shaft on my Dishaw. Billiards I've pretty much used an old Joss Boss break cue, 24 oz. Seems to move the larger, heavier balls ok.

I shoot 1 pocket and straights with my Chad Cater; 18oz with a 11.5 diam. 9 and 8 ball with McDermott D-13. What I do that is really bad is shoot with a much shorter and punchy stroke when I shoot straight pool and for some shots playing on pocket. I rarely let my stroke out while playing those games.

I have noticed that I do the same thing. When I play one pocket for a few days, then play nine or ten ball, it takes quite a few racks to get my full stroke back. Maybe thats why I play better with the Scruggs. Hmmmmmmmm..........

I guess I'm the only person who uses the same cue for all games. I'm not sure why anyone would switch up?
I can understand using a different cue for snooker or billiards where the balls are different sizes.
That's just me. I only own one cue anyways...lol. Schon.

Well, if you are only gonna own one cue, that is a helluva good choice! I love Schon cues, but, after playing with a real nice custom, its hard to go back. Although, I would still be happy to play with one. Maybe I should just use one cue and adapt to it. On the other hand, there are a couple of local players that are way better than me that use different cues for different size tables, different games, different cue balls, etc, so it must be a personal preference type thing.

If all you play is pool, the same instrument you'd use for 9ball, 8ball, or 14.1 should serve you well. I think one of the biggest misconceptions non-1pocket players have about the game is that it's all bunting. So using that logic, maybe you'd want something like a straight rail cue. But 1pocket, played right, you're shooting every shot in the book, and a good pool cue is what you want.

If all you're playing is 3C, then a billiard cue would be in order, though I've been told I play a very nice game of 3C, using a Ginacue.

About the only game that I have a different shaft for is snooker, and believe me, it makes a wold of difference. Pizza Bob lent me his Paris snooker cue so a cue maker here could copy the size, weight, and taper. I have that shaft available for my break cue, should that emergency arise :-)

I think Im doin it wrong, lol. I get out of stroke cuz of all the soft safties and finesse shots. When I do get the chance to break the balls out and get on a run, I tend to mess up my shape quite horribly due to hitting too soft. I guess that just proves that its me, not the cue that needs improving:D.

Thanks Joe,

Yes, I've gone through a lot of cues and finally settled down with my Schon. I'm not sure about the model # but I know it's a mid-90's Schon. I love the way the older ones hit! I'm actually using a Scruggs shaft on it right now because I seemed to have misplaced my old Schon shaft...lol. I think it hits just as well. Like you said, everyone has different likes and dislikes.

I think (just my opinion) that you should use the same cue for all pool games. Personally, I'm going to use the same stick whether it be 9-ball, 1-pocket, 8-ball...etc. I think by switching up, you're just going to confuse your stroke and make it harder on yourself. Then again, I'm not sure if you play for fun, in between, or compete. If you're competitive, whether it be tourneys/league/gambling....same stick is the way to go.
IMHO <---as they say.

I dont gamble, and I rarely play in tourneys, so I guess Im just in it for the fun and enjoyment of improving and learning. Ill bet that Scruggs shaft plays even better than that old Schon shaft:thumbup:.

Yes, I actually prefer the Scruggs shaft now :) It screws on perfectly as well!
