one pocket practice

I am trying to practice for the upcoming DCC events and am playing some one pocket lately.. Is there many other ways that one can practice this game by themselves (nobody plays it around here) besides just racking them up and trying to run 15 and out? p.s. how good is running 15 and out? I ran 14 and 13 a couple times last night but couldn't quite get to 15.

Any tips on how to hone my one pocket skills?
I am currently a rank amateur at one pocket, but i love the game. Sadly, I live in NYC and there are not many people who play here, who would just play for fun. I would currently get "bent over", playing for money at one pocket.

I don't know how important running 15 is, never seen anyone need that many. I'd say it's a worthy accomplishment though. The hardest part is the 1st shot usually against a good player that don't leave much.
I just put a coin on 1 side, break that way, then slide the coin, back and forth as the game changes players, and try to hit good shots for either side. That way I get to practice all parts of the game. It's actually a pretty good way to spend some table time, for me anyway.

Come to the Derby City Classic ( http://www.dcctickets.com ).
Buy some Accustats tapes on one pocket matches.

Throwing the balls on the table and running them into one hole (pocket) is good. You can also "PLAY YOURSELF", Break...respond...etc..etc.. Switch sides, start all over again. Watch videos (Accustats etc..) and YOUTUBE (matches and shots), there are lostsa things available now that were not available just a few years ago. Make sure (if you can) to play on a Diamond Table (used at DCC). Outside of that...practice (banks and kicks). Figure out ways to trap your opponent with limited cue ball movement and/or muscle to get behind balls (them guys at DCC are not likely to leave you behind balls). Finally try running out with all the balls ABOVE the headstring (not on the business end of the table)...very overlooked drill...but has all kinds of applications in a "live fire match". GOOD LUCK

If you want to improve your one pocket game do this.

Start by playing bank pool for a hour. This will help you make the banks that you must make under pressure at one pocket.

Play straight pool for a hour. This will help you faster than anything to improve your ball running skills. Caroms, nudges, position.

Practice my Carom drill for 1/2 hour. Put two balls on the table. Shoot one in and carom onto the other and hit it full. Then try to hit the second ball on one side or the other. This skill is essential in running balls in one pocket.

Try some drills for a hour. Line balls up thru the spot and run them all in the same pocket. Place balls along the head string and run them.

After all that you should be able to play a much better more controlled game.

my way

i build cues and am always looking for the cue that never misses, so i use 2 different cues when i am playing 1p by myself trying to see which cue is better for one pocket. games can last hrs until one of the cues makes a stupid shot.

Thank you to everyone for all of the tips. It is a game I really want to get good at, my banking is generally pretty good, so I do feel like it is a game that I could get to a nice level at if I increase my tactical awareness.
I do plan on making it down to the DCC one year, I just want to make sure that I am competitive in a number of games first.

I am itching to go practice now, but I think might boss might frown upon it if I left work now.

Buy Scott Frost's DVD, aka Power One Pocket from FAST LENNY, . Master Scott's Shots, Get Scott's Stroke, and his Run Outs, and I would think you will win a few bucks.

Honestly there is some great stuff in the DVD if you love one pocket. I am stuck home today, and will be watching it for the 10th. Plus time.

Gabe Owen and Scott Frost both have relatively new 1p videos out, and beyond those, there are more from Cliff, Grady, Hopkins, Encardona, & probably more. Accu-stats is running a 10 for $100 special right now on their match videos as well. Happy shooting.

Pro Skill Drills - Volume 6

It is specifically created to assist you with generating better cue ball control for one pocket type shots. It will better your game overall, but perhaps you will get the most benefits while playing one hole.

If you have any questions about anything in there, I am always free to answer...

You can come to the DCC and just watch top players. It's a great learning tool just to watch!

New York, New York!

Just to let you know, there is 1 pocket action in nyc and vicinity. Be it social or gambling.

The places I recommend are:

Skyline billiards in brooklyn

Soho billiards in manhattan

Society billiards in manhattan

Steinway billiards in queens

and Sandcastle billiards in edison, nj. Sandman, the houseman can steer you in the right direction.

Theres too many of us not to find a good game.

Good luck with your search.

Practicing moves and getting balls out is all good and nesessary but the truth is, All you are doing most of the game is trying to beat the other guy to a shot. The ability to run balls is what wins. It is what the new crop of great players have brought to the table. The old timers with their constant moving would not beat today's aggressive players, it is a whole new game now. A few like Ronnie Allen and Jersey Red were aggressive but many were very timid back then. You can't depend on a good player to make five mistakes for you to win. You are lucky if they make one.

I have been arguing with a few cats for the past year about this:

The one pocket player versus the one pocket shooter.

As of late, the one pocket shooter has been more successful

than the one pocket player. It might be a slight 'changing of the guard'

time frame. Who knows. And just for a little reinforcement to my

statement, checkout the first and second place finishers @ dcc:

Two rotation killers: Shane and Earl.
