I thought it would be interesting to have a thread that just listed a single name of a cuemaker in several categories. You could just cut and past and list your names:One name only each category :)

Always interested in peoples opinions of cues:

Best hit Lambros

Best workmanship Rauenzahn

Best looking Paul Mottey

Most desired Balabushka

Best newcomer Treadway

Best investment Southwest?

That's pretty good.

For me:

Best hit: Wes Hunter
Best workmanship: Dennis Searing
Best Looking: Paul Mottey
Most desired: Gus Szamboti
Best Newcomer: Josh Treadway
Best speculation: Hercek, Ginacue, Southwest
(I cannot make up my mind on this one)

Lets take this to test:

I own a Wes Hunter now...will not sell it
I have owned a Searing, and have hit with 4 of them
I own a Paul Mottey...will not sell it

key word desire you don't have to own it to desire it

Newcomer: Treadway, own one and have one on order

Speculation as there is no such thing as investment:

Hercek...13 year wait time...his order book is closed..mine ordered in 2006
Ginacue...who knows with the bull$hit EG is going through now...ordered mine 2015
Southwest...have owned 3...and my 2005 order gets started 2-2017.

So who is talking out their a$$ now Mr. low I-trader count ?

Investment is definitely hardest one.

Only 1 category, possibly 2 with newcomer, actually requires you to have hit the cue. The rest can be gleaned from just looking at cues. Thought it would be fun, maybe not.

I have no opinion on Searing. :)
 
If you are referring to examining cues in person, rather than basing it on glancing at a few photos,
especially since camera work can vary, you certainly can ascertain a great deal about the workmanship,
not a blessed thing about the cue's hit but definitely a reliable assessment of the cue-maker's skills..
The categories need to be much fewer and a lot more precise categorically speaking to stand a chance.

Exactly so only 1 category requires actual use. And even newcomer is valid going off of reputation.
 
Herein lies the rub.....everyone is entitled to their opinion.....even if or when the person knows little of what they speak.
That's what leads to differences of opinion on matters of subjectivity but facts, now that's an entirely different matter.
So when you ask someone to rate, nominate or pick a best cue-maker in different categories, one needs to remain factual.
However, since the subject matter of each category is basically subjective, facts tend to get in the way and thus ignored.


p.s. Some cue-maker reputations are really over-rated.

I would like to know what people are referring to when they say a cue has a "nice hit". I have hit with cues that their owner said had a nice hit they virtually have no feedback, just a dull thud when you hit the cue ball. My player right now I use because I like the hit, it has a little bit of a ping kinda like a golf driver, obviously very muted compared to a driver but similar and you can feel the cue striking the ball. I think that the "hit" that I am talking about is something a cue builder can build into a cue at will, some Schons feel kinda like my player but some dont. I have 3 shafts and 2 butts that I can interchange with my player but it is only my 1 Ebony butt with 1 particular shaft that has the hit I prefer, when I change the shaft, the hit changes. When I put my playing shaft on a different butt the hit goes away. I also have an original Titlist butt that when I put a spare Predator shaft on that has my same preferable hit, but when I put that shaft on a different butt the hit changes. Any opinions????

Seriously, look at Guido' new Conical Joint cues.. they are GREAT
