Opinions needed...Thanks

Hi all,

So right now, I am in a pretty crappy mood, here is the cause of it:

Today, my dad told me he wanted to play snooker, so I told him, great, there is Big Bertha down at Ray Rec. So I personally go down to Ray Rec around 6pm and told the owner, I want to reserve Big Bertha, and I will be in here around 8:30 to 9PM with my dad because he wanted to play snooker. So the owner marks it down and told me sure thing.

After I got finished with dinner with my pops, he took his one piece snooker cue with him to Ray Rec. As I go down there, it was 8:45PM, and two regulars were down there playing. So I told the owner, wassup with that? He said, oh they are gambling. I asked, how long are they going to be, and he just sort of ignored me and told me, I don't know. I took a set of pool balls, and started playing on the GC and I was pretty pissed off the whole time.

I personally think that if I reserved the table, I have the right to the table. Maybe some of you guys see this differently, maybe I am overreacting, but I don't think that he acted ethically business wise. What do you all think? Yes, I understand they are gambling, but he should have told them before they got on Big Bertha that someone is coming in at 8:30 to 9:00 and I would need this table by than. I might be just throwing a fit like a child, but F**K that sh!t.

I think I am not going to go back down there after this incident and just start going to Shooters in Olathe. It is a much further drive, but I'd rather spend the gas money than get treated like I don't pay like everyone else.

you have to be more understanding in situations like this. i feel your pain for sure because you're right you should have gotten the table. but action is good for pool halls. which equals action is good for pool hall owners. it brings in more people and more people equal more money. then there's always the chance that he's going to get a tip for letting them use the table.

he should have offered you something to make it up to you. free table time for the day or something. or maybe the next time you want to use the snooker table that could be free.

Chino,

I'm not sure if they are still there but there were 2 full size 6x12 snooker tables at the NKC Pro Bowl in North Kansas City. They used to have a golf game everyday until the new management wouldn't continue the rate the players were used to and they quit playing. I'm pretty sure they are still there even though it's been about 6 months since I've been that way.

My dad owns a mechanic shop. When we buy a specific set of tires because someone asked us to, we will sell them to another person that needs the same set and simply order them again. It is not bad business the owner is just insulating him/herself from losing money. If we had a guarantee that the person would come exaclty on the day they say, we will keep them in stock. If the owner held the table for you and then you did not come, THEY would be f*cked.

There are 10 in Missouri???? Really, please let me know where they are, if I find anything more in the MO area, I'd definitely let you know. But it looks like you are 9 ahead of me, I only know of that one in Ray Rec.

Howdy, Chino. My website with all the listings won't be online for another week or two. The whole point is to make the listings available to snooker players, though, so here you go.

In no particular order, the list below includes all the places in Missouri I've called and received confirmation that there is at least one snooker table. The folks who answered the phone don't always know what the size of the table, so for the ones marked "probably" I asked several questions and then made a best guess.

Elks Lodge #999 [one table, probably 5 x 10]
212 N Rollins St
Macon MO

North Kansas City MO
(816) 221-8844

I haven't popped these addresses into Google Maps yet, so I'm not sure how far they may be from KC.

Before taking any trip I'd recommend calling ahead to double-check that the table is there, that it's really a snooker table, etc. If there are any corrections to make, please let me know.

I don't have a listing for Ray Rec. Do you have the address and city?

I completely see what everyone is saying about him missing out on money which is understandable. I'm over the situation, and am not looking to be compensated for the happening. I don't go out of my way to try to earn free stuff or try to take advantage of a situation. Thanks though.

Thanks for the heads up, do you have the address handy? I have never heard of Super Bowl. Thanks!!!!

The owner knows that I wouldn't bend him over with a bottle of KY in the other hand. I am in there enough, talked to him enough and he has taught me on the table enough times to know me better than that. I would never do anyone like that, especially knowing if you hold the table for me, you would've lost money. I would've given him a tip for holding the table for me, anyhow, thanks for your input man.

Sure thing. Thanks to you and Darryl for the new listings.

Once the website is up you'll be able to download the complete U.S. list, the list for just your state/region, and so on. I'm going to write software to take the listings and spit it out in different file formats.

I'll mention both your usernames in the credits section of the website.

Thanks, Darryl. I'll track down their address and phone number. I'll also list your AzB user name in the credits on my website where I'll be posting the listings for U.S. pool halls with snooker tables.

Ray Rec. is on
63rd and Raytown Rd.
Kansas City MO

Here's the listing I found:

Raytown Recreation
10012 1/2 E 63rd St
Raytown MO 64133
(816) 358-5977

When I called this evening the guy who answered said they haven't had a snooker table since the 90's because not enough people played on it. Odd. I double-checked and asked whether I'd reached Raytown Recreation and he said it was. Whether they don't have a snooker table or don't want to let people know about it, so be it.

I did confirm the Pro Bowl Lanes listing, though, and I edited my first post to include it.

it's not really about compensation but the owner could have comp'ed you an hour of table time or something. he nows what's up. he gave his word and broke it. it would have been a sign of good faith i guess.

really if you had asked those guys to move it'd be kind of a hater move. if they're gambling someone's going to make money. not just the business owner but one of the guys playing too. it'd almost be like asking them to not make cash.

what were the guys playing for?

after all this being said i think you might want to consider this. he might not be taking you as serious because he can tell you're still a beginner. if the guy that runs the place plays pool there's a good chance he's giving some preferential treatment to the better players. i've had it happen to me before (i got the "good" table and the less frequent player got the "bad" table)

have you talked to the guy about it?

Ever hear Nice guys finish last. Playing with your father is important. The Pool hall should be calling you- Sir every time you show up. You are the customer, and you should always be right !!! If you spend money, pay time, you need to be assertive, but close to aggressive. Your keeping them in business. I like how others hooked ya up with many new places to play. I'd bring the new list in and show the dumb shit, what else is out there, and there's a good chance his place won't hold a candle. Please got to olathe, lots of tables and great food, with big money tournaments and players. (I call it playing baseball, thats strike 1.) 3 and there out. I love playing on 5-10 snooker tables-great for nineball. and accuracy.

I guess Chino straightened things out.

Yes, that is their address, a pretty hole in the wall kind of place. I guess you wouldn't consider it a real "snooker" table, since it is a 5x10 pool table "Big Bertha", but I have seen people play snooker on it. They have a set of snooker balls for the table. You might not want to include it on your listing. If people were looking for real snooker tables, they would be dissapointed because the table has pool pockets not snooker pockets. Thanks for confirming the Pro Bowl Lanes listing. I will be heading up there with my dad very soon to check it out. Thanks again to you too Darryl.

I see where you are coming from, but the owner pretty much ignored me and when my dad got tired of waiting, he said let's pack up and go. He went to go pay for table time, and I just grabbed the stuff and walked out without saying bye to the owner because I was pretty furious at that moment. My dad said the owner apologized and said "Hopefully next time" but my dad already said that he wouldn't consider going back down there even if he gave him free table time. Now that I go in there, he acts a little weird with me, maybe someone mentioned to him about this thread I started. He never mentioned anything about the situation, apologized to me, or ever said anything about compensating me for anything.

From what my dad said, he said the guys that were gambling were packing up after I walked out, and saw one of them hand the other guy $200.

I wouldn't have kicked them off the table, I know gambling is pretty much king in the pool hall. Action means good business for a pool room, I can understand that. All I really want is an apology and I never got it, but I am also over it as well, so it really doesn't matter to me anymore. I shoot on the GC, and have seriously been thinking that I will just relocate to olathe. They maintain their tables so much better compared to Ray Rec.

You are correct that he might be giving the preference to the better players. I know those guys would shoot lights out on me with a broom handle. These are older gentlemen who I have seen shooting in their very very often.

I haven't talk to the owner about it, I'm not planning on it. If he can't figure it out, than so be it, because it is pretty clear cut what happened.

I mean just yesterday, I was in there with my friend shooting, and we were the only ones in there, and he tapped me on my shoulder and told me to watch the desk and pick up the phones for him because he was stepping out for a second. I even helped him keep track of the time on the tables that were occupied when new people came in to play.

Yea, the reason I like the pool room is because it has an old time feel to it without all those other gidgets gadgets and what not. Though it does suck not to have some good food there :D Thanks for your advice nonetheless.

Yup, that's the table and that's good ol' Don, hardly seem him there anymore.

How are you doing BT? How is the stream going? If you come by KC anytime soon, you have to help me with my game, I'll pay you with beer or something lol.

Bertha isn't a snooker table bro...I think maybe this old quote might help...
"One in the hand is better than two in the bush" I think they were just trying to get the table rented. Was it the same guy in the daytime as the night? That in itself is out of wack for how I remember it. Next time, start renting it, and keep the tab open. Tell Doug your comming back after you pick your dad up, they shouldn't rent it twice...And tell him Jamison says hello!
