Opinions on Joss cues?

The last time the cows played they left an udder mess around the table.
And i think Joss makes a fine cue. I tried one out once and passed on it. I did not like the shaft taper and it too stiff for me.

My wife told me stiff shafts are better. I always believe my wife.

I don't think Schon is made in the states.....

Good gawd man! :yikes: Yes, they are!

There was a cue dealer around here telling people JOSS were made in China now..... :yikes:

Ya don't have to love either one of them, but they are definitely made in the USA.

Been watching that. Wish I had some money to spend. I don't have a Biagio yet.

That's an Asian one. I would like a nice Asian made Biagio eventually, as well as one made by JOSS.

The trouble with Biagio is they were made by more than one manufacturer.
This one was NOT made by Joss...that ferrule looks terrible.

Most of them were not made by JOSS, including this one of course. The ferrule looks pretty bad indeed. Just put another one on...no big deal. I certainly wouldn't mind having it.

Heck the butt cap is pretty yellowed and worn along the bottom edge too, can't even see if it has a bumper but it says "rubber is missing on the bottom"....so I guess that's the bumper gone.

Just a cheap-ish pool cue that would be fun to own and play around with.

A couple of years ago I watched the video on how McDermotts were made and was sold on getting one.I ordered one on line and was given a price much lower then expected when i called for the "Special" price. So I sent an e-mail to McDermott and asked if this model was made in the US. They told me they at that time had several models that the butts were made in China and finished in the US. So maybe other US made cues are done that way and it's a secret. And this cue was not part of the line of cues that we all know are made in China. This was from their regular series.
In fact I posted the E-mail from them admitting this on the forum. If anyone doubts this story just do a search.

If you scroll down the page to the model M81B that's the cue that I'm talking about.
Now I'm not trying to bad mouth McDermott but if they did it,other companies may also be doing it.

Viking has an Asian made line now as well. I don't know if they are "mixing" them. Importing was a decision made by the new owner as a marketing strategy to directly compete with McDermott. He stated that in an interview.

JOSS and Schon are not competing in that part of the market, but certainly they could hugely increase their profit margin if they secretly imported stuff.

I highly doubt that is the case though. There was a problem with counterfeit JOSS cues being imported some time ago though...

As for the McDermotts, I know that they were "mixing" the import and domestic cues, but I heard they stopped doing that. But of course...I don't know that, it's just something I heard.

They are called Valhalla cues. They look pretty good. I read all the copy and did not see where it said they were made in China. It might be there but I did not see it. Are they trying to fool people with the omission of where they are made?

To Wedge

I have known Dan since 1971 and consider him a good friend. Having said that Buckzapper is absolutely Full of S$$T.

Wedge

All you have to do is ask Danny and if he is the man you claim him to be, he will tell you the truth. He remembers the cue I sent him and he remembers what he told me when he slammed down the phone.
If you base your opinion on no first hand facts and aren't wise enough to ask Danny James, maybe you don't know him at all.

Yup, it's the Valhalla line. They have said they are imports in press releases and/or interviews, but I haven't seen it in any of their marketing or advertising that I remember. I know they are imported from Asia, but I don't know specifically from where.

Hiding it? Fooling people? I dunno. I would certainly say they aren't screaming it from the roof tops. Importing from Asia is unpopular in many circles so they don't put it out there up front for sure.

They do look decent and do look Viking. But I haven't really heard anything about them nor seen any reviews.

For that matter, I haven't really seen any reviews in general since Viking started up again under new ownership.

joss cues

I've seen joss cues get a warp in the butt.Don't get me wrong its not a huge one but usually its in the forearm near the a-joint by the top of the wrap. There cues play great and are solid as a rock but think its quite possible that man has a valid claim that his sons Joss did warp.

Former Joss owner, just bought another

I used to shoot with a joss cue for about 10 years and had no problems with it at all. I traded it in for a custom cue on an even trade. Both sides are still happy. I did well at the BCA Nationals this past May so I wanted a souvenior from this tourney and I bought a new Joss cue from a dealer out there. I got home and discovered that the butt of the cue was warped. I immediately called the dealer and he told me that he would personally call them and have them get a hold of me. I hope things turn out better than what has been described earlier.

Replacing of Joss cue

I just recieved and call from Dan and they are honoring the return of this cue mentioned above and replacing it with the same model. Allowing me to choose the specs on the cues as well as the two shafts that I returned with it. He said I will have it in a month.

I bought one brand new and in 3 months the butt warped by 1/2". I sent it to Joss. They said it could not be fixed, but offered to build a new butt for $195.00 I asked about warranty and Danny James himself told me "You chalk it, it's out of warranty."
I told him I would badmouth his cues and I still live up to my promise.

For the love of god please don't listen to this asinine poster. Posting in every thread about Joss shows a serious case of immaturity.

Bugzapper: Make a thread about your feelings about Joss and be done with it. I don't think anybody wants to read your crappy banter.

He's doing what he told Dan he would do. There are a hell of a lot of other posters on this forum a lot more immature than him.

Joss has impressed :)

I just received the new cue from Dan and the specs that he promised are what I got. I was impressed with the turn around time, less than one month. Joss just moved up on my books. Dan Janes was true to his word:smile.

Very nice to hear...but we have a problem.

If you don't show pictures there are strange disturbances in the universe that result...nobody is sure what can happen and we do not want to find out....

So...pics please!

joss makes great cues. period. end of story.

plainly, simply, stated warpage is not covered.i have two JOSS cues. one is an old four pointer with the very thick veneers and ivory joint. the other cue is a plain jane/merry widow, stainless joint. both predate the numerical markings. neither have any warpage issues though they have both been abused and neglected. the ivory joint cracked due to neglect: left in a 20 degree car then rushed in to a house when it was remembered the next morning. CRACK!
the other cue was a poster child for cue abuse: no butt plate/bumper, wrap shot, the ferrule- let's just not go there- okay? a hundred bucks later i have a great hitting joss plain jane that i am very happy with. i am going to pay for the joint replacement on the other cue because it is the right way to do it- the reasonable thing to do.
JOSS cues to ME(ME, ME, ME) are the embodiment of what a great cue should be. dependable cues at any stage of your game. it would not bother me much if all i could shoot with was a JOSS(though someday soon i would love to try a Ginacue). great cues that i think should have the positive reviews anytime, anywhere. i will always vouch for them. great cues. if i am selling cues and tell you in my warranty warpage is not covered and you don't understand that part talk to me b4 you buy.
by the way, the reason i bought the plain jane cue was the true respect i have for joss cues. i got it in a pawn shop for $29.95 with a soft suede leather case. knowing it needed a lot of work i got it anyway. a thirty dollar joss?! yeah baby, anybody know where anymore are?
