Opinions on Joss cues?

I bought one brand new and in 3 months the butt warped by 1/2". I sent it to Joss. They said it could not be fixed, but offered to build a new butt for $195.00 I asked about warranty and Danny James himself told me "You chalk it, it's out of warranty."
I told him I would badmouth his cues and I still live up to my promise.

Dan not offer warrenty work ? I find this very doubtful

Never care for the looks of a Joss.
Just not my taste and dollar for dollar Schon blows them out of the water.
Just my opinion.

hmmmmmm,
my Joss is pretty classic looking, points veneers, nothing out of the norm??

maybe I'm needing a Schon?:grin::thumbup::grin:

I have one from the nineties, still dead straight. Stiff solid hit. Joss is one of the good American production cue companies.

As a matter of fact, I wasn't. My son was and he was serving in Saudi Arabia at the time in the US Air Force and he felt it would be easier for me to contact Joss and see what could be done.
For those that doubt Joss has a warranty that sucks, I heard it directly, person to person from Danny James. If you can't stand behind a warranty on a cue 3 months old, its pretty sad.
I've talked quite a few young players out of buying a Joss cue and I don't intend to stop.
Tell Gary I said hi.

Since I also own a Joss cue, I went to the josscues.com web site to check out their warranty, which is shown below:

Joss Cues®
Any new or used cue purchased from any individual or company, (either in person or on the Internet), who is not sanctioned as an authorized dealer of Joss Cues® LTD., will not have access to direct Joss warranty.

These cues will have to be sent directly back to the point of purchase.
Warranty for Joss Cues®
Joss Cues® are created from the finest materials available. The work is done by some of the finest craftsman in the billiard industry. We are very proud of our cues and inspect each cue during the work process and a final inspection is performed before each cue is packaged for shipment.
Joss Cues® warrants to the original purchaser that its cues are free from defects in material and workmanship; we shall repair or replace the cue at our discretion.
All parts of the Joss Cue® are covered by the warranty, but excludes warpage and normal wear on replaceable parts such as the tip, ferrule, finish, wrap and bumper.
In the unlikely event you discover a flaw in your cue or should it become damaged, do not attempt to repair your cue. Contact your dealer or contact Joss Cues® direct for instructions. Joss Cues® covered by warranty will be repaired or replaced without charge.
This warranty is void if your Joss cue has after-market products or has been subjected to mishandling, misuse, abuse, repair or altered by an entity other than Joss Cues® LTD.
The warranty applies to Joss Cues® belonging to the ORIGINAL owner, and is nontransferable.
Joss Cues® will resolve all warranty claims at its discretion.
Joss Cues® are NOT warranted against breakage or warpage.
We have no control over how the cue is used or the environment in which the cue is stored, we assume NO responsibility for warpage, breakage or any type of water damage.
All Joss Cues® leave the shop straight and in new condition. When you receive or buy your cue inspect it thoroughly. If you chalk and use your Joss Cue this is a sign of acceptance of the cue in the condition in which it was received.
You are responsible for all incoming and outgoing shipping cost.
Make sure that you include:

Your first and last name
Your shipping address
Daytime telephone number
Instructions for your repair
Copy of your original receipt of sale if warranty repair.

We can not guarantee that any repair issues will be covered under warranty; we will gladly inspect your cue and make a determination.

The warranty does not cover breakage and warpage. While I'm not an expert on cues, I do have to wonder how the butt of your brand new cue warped 1/2-inch in just three months.

Thats not good.

he said he bought it brand new.

doesn't matter what kind of condition it was in, new or test hit or whatever, if it wasn't bought directly from a Joss dealer then it will not likely be covered by warranty. If it had been I am sure this would be covered and we would be having a different conversation. Buying "new" on ebay or anywhere other than an authorized dealer is not going to be covered...

Schon and Joss are both very good mass marketed, made in the states, cues.

I don't think Schon is made in the states.....

I am sorry to hear about the situation and that Joss was not able to make it right with you, but there is no way for anybody (including me, you and Joss) to know how the cue was treated by anyone once it left their factory. I too own a Joss cue that would not be covered by warranty if something of that nature were to happen to it. The difference is that mine was built in '94 and is still doing just fine.

I am not saying their warranty doesn't suck, I am saying that their cues do not and that complaints of this nature are not the norm despite the large number of Joss cues out there not covered by warranty.

I don't know who Gary is, but I would again like to again extend my condolences about your son's difficulties with Joss' warranty department. In my opinion it is dissapointing that Dan was unable to resolve his problem, but understandable at the same time.

We have also seen many cases where JOSS and Janes have gone over the top in customer service and warranty issues.

It is a simple fact that not everybody will be satisfied and not every warranty issue will turn out perfectly.

Buckzapper has posted about this issue in just about every JOSS thread, just as he told Dan Janes he would. He does not go on about it and whine about it. Just a statement of his experience and resulting disappointment. Quite proper.

I have never had occasion to pursue a warranty with any cue so I can't comment. I haven't talked to Dan Janes since the early nineties. In all of my communications with him back then he was quite nice. That's all I can contribute on the matter.

It is well known that most cue makers do not in fact warranty against any kind of warpage whatsoever, so the JOSS warranty is not exceptional at all. I would say their warranty is typical.

The case that has been posted is, I think, not typical of JOSS judging from what I have heard overall. But I think Buckzapper should continue to post his experience whenever and wherever appropriate. He hasn't been out of order about it. Just states his experience. I don' think it's a point to argue. It happened, I believe it. Plain and simple. It does not change my opinions about JOSS.

haha... yes, signed up last time I was looking for a cue to see if anyone had heard anything about Ed Young cues

I don't know if that is any kind of a record but it sure is a stretch of time for a first post. :D

Did you get the Ed Young? If so, how was it?

woo hoo I set a record!

I absolutely love it but last time I got it re-wrapped the idiot who did it cracked the butt. Its minor and still plays great, but I hear the damn thing making a minor rattling noise if I bump it on the side.
