Opinions regarding a former top pro playing in and dominating a Poolroom‘s weekly handicapped tournament?

One thing, never say anything negative
Wow, I can't find anything in this post to make a negative comment on. 😉
Eliminate the "Don't miss" thought can be huge. Can't remember who or what shrink said, the subconscious doesnt read the Don't it just reads the Miss. It is amazing the power of the subconscious.
Having my mind right has allowed me to not only play to the best of my ability it also helps me to enjoy "The Recreation " . Pool is a hobby or recreation. Finding the fun in a loss is often difficult. Okay another story rerun, imagine that. 🤷‍♂️
I lost to a much weaker player and had made a blunder on a simple shot. I was disappointed in myself and ready to slip into a deep funk but kept a stiff upper lip and proceeded to the handshake. The young man was so extatic at beating me (he obviously knew my reputation as a top player) That He Hugged Me !!!! I had to smile.and and recognize the dichotomy of the situation. Helped me tremendously. A lesson I will never forget.

he's nowhere near the player he once was.
At the age of 73 it's hard for me to admit that but it's true. My subconscious ( or I guess Ego would be the better term) still thinks I am 19. 🤷‍♂️
So I guess my young friend that at one tome suggested a Tiger on the front and jackrabbit on the back would probably amend that to Turtle on the back. Shrug 🤷‍♂️ pretty sure of the accuracy of that. 😉
Us old Cork suckers still have our "hot flahes" though.
Live in Fame and go down in Flames....NOTHING CAN STOP THE U S Air Force!!!!! Oops another Flash Back. Ah the training.....

Yes, I have read many times that the subconscious strips off the adjectives and focuses on the subject. We often do exactly what we are thinking about, good or bad!

About the young man hugging you, I had a similar happening. A young man came up to me after a pistol match beaming from ear to ear! He had been trying to beat my score for several seasons and he had finally done it. I could have pointed out that I had posted by far my worst score in several seasons but instead I shook his hand and congratulated him. I am not quite that saintly though, I couldn't resist telling him "Now do it again!" Really seemed like a fine young man, just a lack of tact in his excitement. I always gladly help those like him trying to get better.

Thank you boogie.

I rarely talk mental game because in my experience people drastically undervalue it. Possibly because most mental game advice is rather obnoxious and ineffective.

I do have a mental game system that I believe is effective in that it really looks at the roots of where our negative emotions stem from. It helps me recognize when I'm in the wrong mindset, identify what thoughts or stories are keeping me there, and provides me strategies to let those go (you're right that ignoring them doesn't work which is what most people try) while refocusing on more effective stories. I'm not saying this makes me a genius. I've just dogged it so many times I eventually started to see the patterns of how it played out, why, and some ways that don't fail as spectacularly.

Anyway, this is obviously not a thread about mental game. I guess I just wanted to say thank you for the positive feedback. It helps to know that something I say lands with someone. Keep fighting the good fight. We'll never stay in the right mindset all of the time but if you can regroup more quickly when you're down and handle the swings maturely with good humor then you're in a small minority of champions.
Even tho my mechanics are pretty rough, as is my stroke, I'm quite certain that my lack of development is far more due to the mental aspects of the game. I am my own worst enemy. 🤷‍♂️

So the guy that is 70yrs old and is playing folks with a fair handicap is being vilified because he still has skills enough to win. Just kick him out and give everyone a participation trophy. WTF. Instead of whining about his talent. Make yours better. What has happened to strive to improve. We are not created equal in all endeavors. I suck. But I should still win. Watch the videos. Stay in your lane without balls enough to try to improve.
Yes!!! 100 percent!! This is why America will always be behind the rest of the pool world. We are soft and lazy.

Well don't give up on us Yet. 😉 It might be a snowballs chance.....but it's a chance. Keep the positives and leave behind the negative. CAN'T means Won't. 🤷‍♂️ 😉

How many weeks in a row are you ready to commit to this arrangement?
Every 2 years when Ernesto Dominguez comes to recover and work on our tables, I manage to talk him in to playing in our weekly 9-ball handicapped tournament. He’s reluctant, but I convince him its good for our players to see a player like him perform and to potentially play a match against him, and I do handicap him one rating higher than our top ranked players.

I see this as completely different than the situation I’ve described in this thread. For one, it’s one tournament every 2 years. Secondly, he’s 10+ years older than this other player. Thirdly, his main source of income has been as a table mechanic for the last 40+ years, not a pro pool player. And lastly he has no interest in the $ - I pay his entry and he does not even purchase 1/2 of himself in the auction after someone buys him, which I try to, and if I do, I give him all of whatever he wins, and yes he does usually win.

Additionally, for nearly every opponent he plays, at the completion of the match he also offers suggestions of what they should work on and spends a little time demonstrating and watching them try it.

Then again, for anyone who knows him, it goes without saying that Ernesto is a very special person, who in my opinion belongs in the BCA HOF for everything he has done in his lifetime to promote and advance this game / industry.

I see your point: Ernesto plays better than I do?!?!?

Well, considering I am about 2000 miles from said pool room I think it would be a mighty commitment. But if f I lived there? I would imagine that my current state of suck would guarantee that more than just CJ would dismantle me. If I wanted to play, I guess all the weeks.

Now if I am a 650 or better? I can see it getting a little tired but like many on this site, I have a passion for firearm competition and competed at a high level for years. My home club is the same as TGO and one of the highest concentrations of GM’s so I am used to going to a match and competing with and against the best with no handicap.

Gotta pay to play if you want to win!

Why put a limit on it ahead of time?
My Daddy taught me, "🤷‍♂️ do it until it hurts. When it hurts ....quit. " easy. With a tournament there's no contract or commitment. Just play if it's fun. Different things are fun for different people. If it ain't fun don't blame, change the game.
Scotch Doubles is a fun and educational way to play. Especially when the pairing is opposite ends of the ratings scale matched up as a team. I had the benefit of just such a money match in which I was the weakest player. My partner didn't speak unless I asked. He just went and stood where he wanted the cueball. 🤷‍♂️ I learned a lot and won a little money too.

The Mosconi is a country against a continent. It was set up like that because in the early years we spanked them nicely unless my memory fails. I think the overall win/loss record for the cup still favors America but I really don't remember.

His soft and lazy comment is ridiculous. If I had to pick the flaws for the American players in the cup it would be that the US players have a much stronger spirit of individualism. When a gambling match cost you tens of thousands it is hard to embrace the winner as a teammate a few months later.

Just my opinions of course but the US beat in europe for years and will do it again.

You can also bump the entry fee up for a certain speed to a really high number and change the race like those split bracket tourneys to where he goes to 11 and the others go to 2 or 3 something like that.
I’ve seen that work very well. Price the super solid guys out(or almost out). And price in the weaker players to the point they are getting such a good price they can’t get mad about losing.

Terry Stonier did that on the Tuesday night tourneys in Sacramento for years, worked great. Didn’t lose many players and most players were ok with it. As the value was good for strong and weak players and the majority in the middle were playing normal fees.

As I recall it ranged from $5 to $25 or $30(for the strongest players). This was in the 80’s so do the math for today’s money.

Why is the op so reticent to tell us who the guy is? I don't get the secrecy. Its like when people harp on a cue builder but won't id them. What's the big deal. Afraid to offend the guy? Please.

Agree. The 'soft and lazy' quip is braindead talk. Has no clue apparently.
