I am getting that desire to buy a new pool cue. I currently play with a McDermott but I have been thinking about and wanting to get a Jacoby, Joss or Keith Josey. But I have a couple of questions.

The first is do the lower end ($500 and Less) Jacoby, Joss or Keith Josey cues hit similar to their higher end cousins?

The second what is the hit like compared to a McDermott? I have read the hit of a McDermott is kind of a soft hit and the hit of a Keith Josey is kind of a hard hit.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Do you like the hit of the McDermott? If you do I'd suggest going with something that has a flat faced wood to wood joint. Some people can feel the difference between flat wood to wood and piloted steel joints, others can't tell a bit of difference. I myself am a big McD fan and love the feel of them. Eventually when I decide to spring for a custom I'll most likely be going with a Carolina Custom as they have very reasonable prices and IMHO they feel a lot like a McD.

I do like the hit of my McDermott. I have only shot with the McDermott, a Viking and a Scorpion. I will have to look at Carolina Customs and see what they have that I might like.
Thanks for your advice and opinion!

i have a few cues from Keith Josey, and i can tell you that there is very little difference in hit, between his "high end" and "lower end" cues.. in fact i don't think he has any "lower end" cues.. All of his cues come with very nice shafts, regardless how much you paid for them.. he treats all of his cues equally..

i used to have a Mcdermott too, i would say Josey hits a little "stiffer"..

Josey's hit very solid and hits very stiff compared to a McDermott. Josey's are very good cues and are a great value. Sneaky Petes start out under $400 , but all depends on what you like. You can soften up the hit of a Josey alot by just changing the tip or an aftermarket shaft like the ob-2. The thing I like about a Josey is his sneaky petes hit just as well as his high end cues.

You know the butt doesn't have much to do witht eh hit of the cue. At least to me personally. Yes, the balancing of the butt is important, but the shaft (what kind of shaft is very very important, diameter, taper, LD or standard), joint, joint pin material, ivory, stainless steel, wood to wood joint all hit different. The ferrule and tip combination would hit differently and what sort of ferrule and ferrule weight would affect the tip end mass causinf different deflection (To some noticable and to some it isn't). Good luck, hope the information helps.

Hi Phil,

I too, used a McDermott before buying a Joss. The hit of the Joss is firm and harder than the McDermott.

Took me a few games to adjust, but everyone says I'm playing better. Now whether an expensive Joss hits better than a lower cost one...Well I'm told that your only paying for the cosmetic appeal of the cue when spending more.
I have read that the plain-er Joss Cues hit and play just as well as the high cost fancy ones.

Good Luck in your choice,
Nancy

I used to think that also Chino, but after some experimenting, I have realized that the butt has a LOT to do with the hit. I have a great playing Scruggs purple heart sneaky with a steel joint, but I put the shaft on another cue and it hit like crap. I couldnt believe the difference in hit. It felt softer, and there was nearly no resonance. Try it our sometime, Ill bet you will be surprised.

Ive hit with newer Joss cues, but they dont hold a candle to my old Joss gold letter sneaky. Sometimes newer and more expensive is worse, lol.

You cannot go wrong with a Josey cue, his cues are some of the best playing cues on the planet at any price point period.

Good friend of mine leant me his beautiful custom cue to play with the other night, I showed up without my case.....it was a georgeous $1500+ cue, the craftsmanship was amazing....he loved it and could play like a champ with it.....I couldn't make a ball....I did better with a house cue....other friends of mine love ld shafts......maple is the only way for me, I've been adjusting for squirt since I was in my teens....

Whatever you get, my only advice is test hit....you really need to play with it beforehand IMHO....
