Orcollo might try to beat the 626 record

Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's record. It doesn't diminish Babe Ruth. He is still Babe Ruth.

It seems to me we can recognize the new record holder John Schmidt while recognizing the great legend Willie Mosconi.

Completely agree. Unfortunately, Maris suffered some hate for breaking Ruth's record.

And sadly, we are seeing the same thing here, some that didn't want the record broken, and want to make excuses for how it must have been easier.

John has the record.

All the best,
WW

Just keep that in mind. It's the only correct statement, among many, to try to diminish John's record. All the other BS excuses do not matter.

All the best,
WW

What I will keep in mind is that that is the opinion of some unknown on AZ who calls himself WildWing, lol.

Lou Figueroa

“Older and living out of a car sometimes”. Really ? Early 40’s isn’t old by most standards, even during the mid 1950’s.
Schmidt is living out of an RV and is older than Willie’s when he had his wondrous run.

Quit talking about bowling, you’re off base there.

Reading comprehension, please.

He said he caught a nap in his car after driving from one exhibition to another before walking into a pool room.

You are mistaking taking things in a historical perspective for hate.

Lou Figueroa

I get the feeling John could run 2,000 balls on a 6x12 snooker table and someone would say "Yes, because the nap cloth helps the balls go in easier! And there is more open space, so less clusters too!"

On a more serious note, I'd like it if other pros tried to break the record and posted their runs as John did. Would finally settle a lot of speculation.

I agree. Charles Ursitti knew Willie better than most, and he regales us with his account of how Willie would prepare for his exhibitions, which included naps in the car just prior to the exhibition, then maybe hit a few balls around (Charles describes some of Willie's favorite drills), and then he'll nod at Charlie as if to say, "I'm ready."

As always, Charles is thoroughly engaging in this interview, which took place in 2016. It's his classic no-nonsense NY'er style that cuts right through the BS.

And you are substituting excuses for facts. And hate is a matter of degree in your mind.

It doesn't matter whether it was done with a carbon fiber or wood shaft. It doesn't matter the size of the table as long as it was reasonable. It doesn't matter what the climate control was. It doesn't matter whether the balls were cleaned during the run. None of that matters.

The fact of the matter is, for the documented high run, John Schmidt has it. For practice runs, with credible accounts, Babe Cranfield has it

I understand the truth hurts now and then.

All the best,

I think you should be talking to Jeff about that.

Apparently he's the one that doesn't believe polishing balls makes a difference.

Lou Figueroa

After reading your post again, well, your wrong.

Reread my post about polishing balls.

I said there was a difference.

What your trying to imply is that I said it did or didn't make it easier.

Everyone on the planet, regardless of how stupid, knows there is a difference.

Whether that difference is easier or harder depends on how you look at it.

From my understanding, your correct about Babe having a higher run based on "witnesses".... and taking someone's "word" in place of fact.

As far as "undisputed proof":

John Schmidt is the only one in that list.

No hearsay or whatnot...proof.

Thanks for that, Sean.

Charlie was great! His passing was huge loss for the pool community.

Yes we would if it was done in Buffalos. Anybody can try.

LongArm, I'd like to ask: what is your motivation for offering this incentive at this time?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's great but I'm also curious about the timing AND what kind of conditions you'll be providing.

Yes, that's what I said. And part of the word I take, is Babe's himself.

Thanks for the link.

I've listened to that particular one a couple times since it was released.

I would hope that nobody thinks that "I" dont believe that Willie was in a class by himself....period!

Having said ^^^^^......we cant dig Willie up (RIP) and hand him a cue. We also are still "taking someone's word"..... in place of "proof".

Yes, I know Charlie's word is golden with some, not so much with others. I happen to be one of those that believe him because anyone that ever met him, well, you couldn't "not see" his character and integrity.

Charlie wouldn't say anything that was not true to the best of his knowledge...again,...period!

But, regardless of how many balls Willie "could have run"....it doesn't change the fact that John's record has topped "everyone's" record and will stay there, just like Willie's did, until someone tops the 626 with proof.

I also would like to reiterate this from Charlie's interview:

People like myself that have run 156, 110, 127, 134 and a boat load of 60s, 70, and 80s...well, we ain't done NOTHING in the grand scheme of 14.1.

I always chuckle when I see or here someone bragging about running a 100 in 14.1. Not to belittle them but, it just makes me rethink about what it takes to get where the GREATS of yesteryear and the GREATS of today go with what seems like EASE.

Again, not belittling anyone, heck, I'm in the group of people that "cant get there" so, trust me, I understand.

Everytime I "dont get there", it reinforces my respect for "everyone" that "can or could get there"....again,.....period!

Yes he did in an effort to prop up Mosconi by virtue of his hardships, which is necessary to mention, why ? That would be the equivalent of telling the dear readers that he skipped lunch at times while doing Twoadays when working for Brunswick. So....?
Capisce? Irrelevant blabber.

Also I started watching your 112 on YouTube. Hat off to all you 100 ballers !

I listened to the Cue it Up podcast a few days ago where they interviewed John. He mentioned that another pro made what he considered an obnoxious statement about breaking the new 626 record and doing it in a week. John wouldn’t say the name, but maybe it was Dennis. He said most of the other pros, like Thornston, were very respectful and congratulated John, but this one pro was kinda dismissive of it and (at least John thought) greatly underestimated the difficulty of doing it.

It wasn't Dennis.

It wasn't Dennis.

Dennis is not your run-of-the-mill pro anything.

Dennis came up the hard way. He knows what hard work is and he respects others accomplishments.

I "know for a fact" my statement is true unless Dennis has changed a LOT since I was last around him and I just dont see that coming from him.

I've been around him several times but, nowhere near as much as you Jay.

Putting my personal experience aside, I'll take your word for it as well.

I've spoke to Charlie a few times in person. He always seemed like an honest person to me. Kind of a hard-azz lol.... but a good guy.

I'm not saying he would ever right-out-lie but, I also know how close he was to Willie. The sheer emotional factor could cause ANYONE to add a little more to a recollection but, I don't believe that he would on purpose.

Either way, Willie was a great man and a great 14.1 player.

BTW:

Thanks for the hats-off. Running even close to a 100 balls is extremely difficult for me on loose equipment. On my 9' pro-am, it seems impossible lately.

Hell, most days I feel relieved to get past the first rack...
