Orcollo vs Yang in Manila

This match up reminds me of Color of Money with Efren and Earl. Both are great pool players matching up against one another. I haven't seen Orcollo play much, but i've seen videos on youtube of Yang playing against Efren and i must say... Yang breaks pretty good, couple of 9 balls on the break.

You're missing a lot if you haven't seen Dennis play yet. BTW, I'm from Rancho Bernardo.

It is going to be a race to 60, 3-day battle from April 21-22. I hope they show it in ESPN Asia so we can view it via TVU. Is it going to be alternate or winner breaks format?

Here is the article from the azbilliards website:

ORCULLO VS. YANG

PHILIPPINES---THEY’RE both no world champions, and neither do they hold any major title, but Dennis Orcollo and Yang Ching-Shun are two of the most feared pool players in the planet.

Curiously, despite being from neighboring Philippines and Chinese-Taipei and frequently visiting each other’s turf, they have not met yet in any match – in tournament or in money-game, where they are both the acknowledged kings in their respective countries.

But the long wait will soon be over as Orcollo and Yang have agreed to settle the score on who between them truly rules the money-game industry, not just in Asia but in the world as well, as they cross path in a race-to-sixty 9-Ball duel on April 20 to 22 tentatively set at the Gateway Mall in Cubao, Quezon City.

Besides the prestigious claim, Orcollo and Yang will also dispute the $10,000 (P490,000) at stake in the contest.

“It’s all about the money,” quipped Perry Mariano, whose Bugsy Promotions is organizing the event in cooperation with Rocketman Enterprises.

Ramon “Mon” Tuason, head of Rocketman Enterprises and founding chair of the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) said: “There is no element of luck in the race-to-60 battle between Yang and Orcollo. The better cue artist will win.”

“It’s a given fact that many are lured to billiards because of money, and more than the tournaments, it’s the money-game that is keeping the industry alive. And Dennis and Yang are on the top of that ladder,” added Mariano.

Known it will be, definitely.

The 27-year-old Orcollo is heavily regarded as the best money-game player in the Philippines that no one dared to challenge him except in a handicapped match with him giving the opponent an advantage – huge advantage most of the time.

Moreover his home soil, this Surigao del Sur native has been making mammoth waves in the international money-game scene, most recent of which was in the 2007 Derby City Classic in Kentucky a couple of weeks ago, where he stole the spotlight from the tournament proper by winning a couple of nationally-televised side events in sweeping fashion, as well as a number of privately arranged money-game matches.

Unfortunately, Orcollo is not as lucky in formal tournaments, where his greatest achievement so far is the title conquest of the 2006 World Pool League.

In that category, he ranks below the likes of world champions Efren “Bata” Reyes, Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan, and Ronato “Ronnie Calamba” Alcano, all of whom he usually beat in the money-game.

Like Orcollo, Yang is a dreaded cue artist, especially in money-game, that he is considered a pool legend in Taiwan.

The 27-year-old Yang is a former two-time Asian Games gold medallist, and Asian 9-Ball Tour overall champion.

But he too has not won a major tournament, having beaten to the draw by Pong Fang-Chao, and Wu Chia-ching, his compatriots who had wore the world championship crown.

Both Orcollo and Yang are hoping and keen on nailing the big one. But in the meantime, they will first settle who between them is the money-game’s number one.

Look beyond the match guys. I have a hunch that Asia is going to show Kevin and Deno how it's done. So who's for Mike and who's for Loree Jon?

The Asian guy should win it.:)
Depends who's breaking better.

joey both are asians :D .

of course, it will be orcullo, heard a story that yang hide from orcullo when they arranged a money game last November during WPC06.

need to check that WPC subforum again......

You can consider Philippines as a Latin country, almost all have Spanish names. Over 300 years? under Spain? So you could say Latin vs Asia. Hehehe. Anyway, I'll go for Orcollo, this is because of his strong showing on many money games including the two ring games win at DCC.

I'll go out on a limb and say that Yang will win it if only because it will be held in Manila and there will be a lot of pressure on dennis to win it. I know he's no stranger to pressure being the "money-game king" and all, but having all the hopes and dreams of an entire country pinned on him would surely rattle even the most focused player.

You're correct, parvus. and don't forget that they also underwent some years of american, british and japanese occupation as well. And while their race is Malay, Filipinos also have a lot of chinese blood because of centuries of trade with them. But still they are untimately most influenced (brainwashed) by years of american education, sports and entertainment. Which explains their penchant for basketball, bowling, and, of course, billiards.

Philippinos like Billiards? Well, I'll be darned;-)

This sounds great though. I hope they release a DVD or something. I haven't seen The Color of Money, but both sound fascinating.

I'm guessing this won't be alternating break.;-)

I met a lot fo Filipinoes and they speak quite decent English and not Spanish. They said that after the Spaniards lost the war to the Americans, the Americans occupy Philippines which was then Spanish speaking. So the Americans brainwashed the Filipinoes that whoever speak english are highly educated. And Americans replaced Spanish in school to english as major teaching language. So the next generations lost their touch in Spanish and start to speak english. Well that's what they said which was also told to them by their grandfathers. And Billiards came and baseball and baketball etc.

Cant remember during my studying years that we were invaded by the Britons or if ever they came? I think that is not true. Ever met a Filipino with English Accent? not even a single trace of english culture in Filipino culture.

Originally, Filipinos were Aetas, black people, the one that look like africans, but a little shorter, we still have these people in the north of the Philippines. Then the indons came followed by the malays. You see the Filipinos are mix of this 3 breeds. The spanish came, defeated by americans, americans left, japanese came, americans are back and they left us again. and you're right, from the time that the malays came until now, chinese continue to do transactions with Filipinos.

with Orcullo and Yang, both are asians, geographically.

Nice, but I'm kinda disappointed with such small amount of money. This match is worth a lot more.
Is it really true that they've never met before? I heard that Orcollo beat Yang for cash before.

Thank you. This is NOT their first meeting. Dennis did beat Yang about a year ago in a shorter race for several thousand. This was discussed by several players during the WPC in Manila. Yang was considered one of the best money players and definitely the most feared of the Chinese players.

I was thinking the same thing. Orcollo usually does much shorter races for $10,000, and even back in the 90s the race between Efren and Earl was for ten times as much but only twice the length. This would be great to watch in any case.

Like I said earlier, you need to look beyond the match. Does the words "side bets" and "bookie" mean anything? How will this event be funded or the expense be justified if there's not even a mention of TV. $10K? Try 6 or 7 figures.
