Oroville info

I just got back from Oroville a little while ago, I'd been there since Tuesday...Gabe is still on the winners side, IIRC. Other notables still there are Atwell, Archer, Parica, JJ Cain, Durbin, Orcollo and some others that I'm too tired to remember. Oh yeah, Charley Bryant is still on the winners side, my buddy bought him in the calcutta. Amar was still winning when I left. The losers side is full of talent, a guy from my town beat Chohan last night and Chris MacDonald today. My buddy Tinsley put out Stan T from Canada and another friend from Modesto, Paul Juarez beat Tang Hoa on the hill in the losers side, snapping the nine in! Kim Davenport was in the losers side when I left.

There was lots of action...Tony Chohan giving Justin Whitehead the 7 ball for a dime a set, they split sets by taking turns steamrolling each other...Lots was bet on the rail for that one. I got to see Morro and Galindo play Durbin and some guy partners nine ball, scotch doubles, hundred a man...Morro and team won 1400 pretty quickly, and then Morro beat Durbin out of another thousand or so playing heads up...Durbin has a stake horse running around the place trying to bark up action. I had to laugh to myself when Durbin was talking the stakehorse into the game with Morro. I hear Durbin tell him that Morro "can't beat anybody"...You don't have to be from SoCal to know that's not true. But don't get me wrong about Durbin, that guy is just ruthless on the table, maybe he is the best like his stakehorse keeps saying, but when Archer and Davenport walked through the room, ALL barking ceased. Justin Bergman offered Whitehead the 8, I like Whitehead in this game, that guy has a high high gear. Nick Krueger was there, playing well. A couple of Europeans were there that played lights out, I don't remember their names I heard they were Pollocks or something like that. Cherwyck was there, he won hill hill against Rachel Abinik, female pool needs more like her that's for sure;) , what a hottie. Old Ronnie Allen was there, mostly at the bar, and ended up pitching a fit about something and going home. Johnny Archer got his AAA1010 beat by an AAAKK and got a couple thousand in the bad beat jackpot at the poker room there, some guys have all the luck! Oh yeah and my J4 offsuit beat Nick Kruegers KK and then my q7 offsuit beat his AA in a 4-8 holdem game...Feel the pain Canada! King Kong was in constant 50 a rack action, he's tough to beat that's for sure. Gerardo Jamito was there, lost 9 to 7 to Durbin the winners side. My dad, who plays jam up on a barbox lost 9-6 to Orcullo and 9 - 7 to Stan T. I got bounced by a guy named Wortiman from the Seattle area, a tough old guy that was very gracious as he spanked me. Danny Medina was there, another victim of Durbin. Corey was either out or in the B side, I don't remember. Ernesto Dominguez was still grinding. Richie Rich was there. They announced over the PA system for the pool players to please stop smoking bud in their rooms apparently housekeeping was noticing a distinct odor coming from the pool players block! Isn't it legal on Indian reservations?

My pick to win it all? Orcullo looked stron strong strong and you can never count out Archer. Durbin is all the rage, if you believe the hype. Amar is a sleeper, watch out. With Davenport on the B side I have to go with Charley Bryant or Gabe and the answer is..........Gabe. I haven't really seen him miss too much and I was there for 5 days, plus he's got that hollywood hairdo going on and it just might be enough to put him over the top. My town of Modesto still has three left in the final 32, Jeff Gayle, Paul Juarez and Kim Davenport, they're fighting it out on the B side.

God I'm tired. The team event was just starting when I left. More on that later but I'm beat. Goodnight AZ, that's the report from here...........Marc
Thank you for an excellent post....just what many here wanted to see....What are some particulars about this tournament, such as prize money offered and when does it end? The money must be pretty good to get some of these names that did not appear in the Reno tournament in December...

I'm not sure how the breakdown of the prize money, but there is $30,000 added to the nine ball and $15,000 added to the team. I'll try to find out while I am there today how the payout works.

Johnny Archer won over JJ Cain

Eric Durbin won (I can't remember the name of the other guy), case game. The other guy shouted NOOOO!!!! after Eric's made the 5 ball (i think) cause he almost hook himself on the 9 ball.

Gabe Owens beat Justin Bergman, IMO probably the greatest match of the day, they were both trading brake and run outs and it all went down to the flip of the coin cause Gabe won the flip and broke last on their hill-hill match.

Jose Parica prevailed against Colin Mazaika. I thought Colin would play as strong as he played when he beat Kim Davenport a few hours ago, but he did'nt.

Glen Atwell and Charlie Bryant also played their match on the winner's side and I'm not sure on who won that match, my eyes were glued to the Orcullo vs Kang match.:)

Dennis Orcullo won against Amar Kang, another great match. They were both not getting a good roll/table layout after their brakes but were still getting out most of the time. They were both trading safeties and counter safeties with Dennis getting a better role on those instances. I think Amar only missed 2 shots, one was on a tough cut on the nineball when Dennis was on the hill. I never saw Orcullo miss a shot.

After last night's matches there will only be 16 players left. I got to get back their later for my team event.

IMHO, there were some teams that I think did not comply with the 1 pro/semi-pro/masters per team. Danny Petralba told me that if other teams are not complying with the rules he should have fomred his own team - Danny Petralba, Gerardo Jamito, Dennis Orcullo and their pro would be Jose Parica. (yeah right :) )

Too much pool to play, watch and to talk about, no time for sleep and rest (nevermind the food, it would only hurt for a few minutes :D ).

Glen Atwell just beat Amar Kang on the losers side. It was hill-hill and Amar broke and scratched on the break. Atwell almost had Archer the round before. I think he was up 7-3 at one point and was on the hill but Archer pulled it out in the end.

Charlie Bryant and Ames, I think his name was, were playing and were at 7-7 on the loser side when I left. I have honestly never seen so much trouble and/or analyzing racks as I did in this match. I don't think there was one single rack that was accepted the first time.

Archer and Durbin just started in one of the matches on the winners side, while Orcullo and Parica matched up in the other winners match.

Austin Murphy got eliminated by Ames earlier in the day.

It was hill hill.Atwell had difficult position on 3 ball. instead of cutting it to left corner pocket he chose to cut it to to right side pocket and missed it and left the cue open.Johny did johny`s thing and beat Atwell. After that Atwell played Ed.Ames from Bay area of California and beat him and then played Amar and beat him.I could not stomach the tobacco smoke and left the site.

Great updates! Thanks. Don Wirtaman plays a lot of straight pool and is on Mike's team. Good for Atwell, at least one NW'er is doing well. Keep us posted!

great post karambolista. How did Petralba do?

Dan is out, he lost to Gabe Owens, he had 2 unlucky breaks on his last 2 breaks. (they were racking for each other)

But his team is still in, they will be playing the hotseat match today.

Archer was playing Orcullo in the finals when I left. Archer won the first set 9-7 and I just couldn't stay long enough for the second set. The finals of the team was going on when I left. The team from the winners side was up but I'm not sure the exact score. They pretty much dominated it. I overheard some of their guys talking and they won most of their matches 11-3, 11-4. Petralba's team finished third. Hopefully someone else was there that can fill in the rest of the blanks.

How many

were breaking from the side as opposed to the middle? Sometimes side breaking works well, and sometimes you just come up dry, depending on the tables.
