Hey Ross, we almost got back on topic! :D :p

You are just as much to blame for this thread getting off topic as anyone else. I come away from this thread learning a great deal. I also know who my friends are from the off-the-record communications I received by Americans as well as international posters.

For the record, I personally apologized via GOOD REP to Rossaroni for my role in any negativity that occurred in this thread. It is unfortunate that some think it is acceptable behavior to target well-meaning posters and their loved ones who have nothing to do with the topic of this thread in an effort to have the infamous last word. I'm sure there will be another flippant remark made towards me after I hit the Click button on this post, even though I am sincerely trying to bring the negativity to closure.

I believe Rossaroni's intentions to be good in that he wanted to engage in a productive colloquy about Oliver Ortmann. I publicly apologize to Rossaroni for my role in this thread going off course.

It is amazing to me how many e-mails, PMs, and other niceties I have received in reference to this thread, some from lurkers and some from veterans posters on this forum.

To Markus, I know exactly where you are coming from, and you and I will always be friends. I like your style! :)

I enjoy engaging in a productive colloquy about a variety of pool topics. Some folks are, to put it bluntly, jealous and have no other way to vent other than creating negativity due to their inferiority in some circles. I am not just speaking about international posters, but some Americans as well. Let me just cap it by saying this. Don't always judge a book by its cover, and I will just leave it at that. There will be some readers of this thread who will catch my drift! ;)

To Marvel, I'm part Native American, and we were here first! :D

Hi JAM!

I became delighted by your post, but then I realized you were talking about the other 'Markus'. :( :p

Anyway, I like you a lot, eventhough sometimes I feel your attitude towards patriotism is a bit fanatical, and a question pops up in my mind, that if you were born by chance let's say in Iraq or Afghanistan, what would you write and where then.

I was questioning a bit if I want to publish my earlier post, as I sure don't want to be the target of your sharp tomahawks, but I gambled as I rememberd your earlier avatars, and I was gessing that there is some Native American blood in you, or at least you have a high respect towards them.

I've found out from your posts that you have a big heart, and you are a big fan of our sport with high morals also.
I hope your attachment towards your country won't make you blind to see that we are all sisters and brothers under the same Sun, and all these mundane humane inventions like countries etc.. are all irrelevant when looked from the eyes of the Great Spirit.

I hope we can be friends (forever) also.

Peace

Markus

Ps. BTW, White Buffalo Lady is here with us on this planet also. She's Universal, so She spends time around a lot.. ;)

While I have not agreed with everything that you have said in this thread, I want to say that I respect your point of view immensely. I also want to let you know that I chose your comments as my new signature because I think it is one of the funniest lines I have ever read on this forum. Its not there to antagonize you - its there to celebrate and showcase your humor.

Have a good one! (did I say ONE?) lol

What I find amazing is that you still claim to be the victim when it is clear that you was the first person in this thread to take it off topic and attack me. Not once but twice about topics that had nothing to do with this thread? When I asked you to explain this you of course had no answer because unless you edit or delete your posts there is no excuse for it.

I also apologized to Ross in a PM, gave you two free last words last night but of course you had to have a third and drag me back in.

I just made several posts back on topic as ross requested, but of course you wasn't having that! So here we go again congrats, its pretty clear what your intentions are.

As for the pm's, well lets just say one of the reasons I keep posting on this predominantly American forum is the number of Americans that offer support. Its refreshing to see how many Americans distance themselves from your hate filled racist remarks. The number that have done so diplomatically put still publicly in this thread and others is remarkable.

If you was British and slagged off Americans on a British forum you'd probably get 99% agreeing with you jsut because you're British lol!

Despite having the first two attacks on me in this thread, and then another last 3 last night I wonder how many more you'll have this time? Go on you know you can make that magic 10!

Give it a rest. You continue to label me a racist, when I have continually stated that I am not. Yet, you keep bringing it on. I cannot make myself any more clearer than I have.

There are some legendary players that have never won a world title or US Open, has Parica?

No he hasn't. I believe that Ralf Souquet has won both. I remember that at the 1991 World Championships, Ralf was interviewed by ESPN, and the interview aired during the finals (Earl VS Nick Varner) match. Ralf made the prediction that "perhaps someday there will be a German World Champion." [paraphrased]

I remember a friend of mine saying this; "Those guys have absolutely no idea what they're up against! Dream on! There is no way they can compete over here!"

Well... I had just spent the 2-3 years playing in Europe. I knew about guys like Tom Storm, Mikael Sandzelius, Bengt Jonasson, Gunter Giesen, Ralf Eckert, Oliver Ortmann, Ralf Souquet, Thomas Engert, Norbert Lang, and others that were playing extremely well. These guys were no joke and they would soon test the international pool scene. There was also this Filippino named Bustamante that was stirring things up over in Europe. Few people realize that before Francisco conquered the world, he conquered Europe, not America.

It was only a few years later that Ralf fulfilled his own prophecy by winning the WPA World 9 Ball Championship in 1996, after his fellow countryman OLIVER ORTMANN won it 1995.

What is scary, is that Kunihiko (the first Japanese Champion) won the WPA World 9 Ball title almost 10 years ago! By now, there are probably 200 students of his just salivating ... waiting to kick the world in its ass.

Two- time Champion Fong Pang Chao (aka Fang Pei Chao, aka Fang Pang Chao, aka Feng Pang Chao, aliases courtesy of Allen Hopkins) He won his first World 9 Ball Title in 1993. Think about how many 12 year olds in Taipei can put together a 8 or 9 pack. It's scary. Now think about how many kids are aspiring to do that in Manila. Double scary.

It should be noted that on the womens side of the coin, the last American woman to win the World 9 Ball Championship was Loree Jon Jones in 1993. The last American to win a title on the WPBA Classic Tour was Jeanette Lee, who won the 2001 BCA Open 9-Ball Championship. That was a very long time ago. All of the new WPBA stars are coming from other parts of the world (Jasmin, Xiaoting, GYK).

I still believe that with players like Justin Bergman and Landon Shuffett on the rise, that the US will be well represented in the future. However, unless the US players start paying from their heart (and not their wallet) it will be a long, uphill battle. That's how I see it.

Just want to straighten up that Takeshi Okumura won over Yasunari Itzuzaki (sp?) - both from Japan, at the 1994 WPA World Championships, held in USA.

But!

At 1993-95 and -96, the cream of the crop, meaning the REAL pros, were not playing in the WPA tournaments, as of Don Mackey's PPBT.
So, these year's stated above, there were two World Champs. At WPA, there were Europeans, Taiwanese and Japanese + some Americans. At the PPBT, there were Philipinos and the top Americans.
Strickland took part at WPA WC at least in -96, bcos he had some problems with Mackey's organization (surprise).

Before Cardiff at 1999 (Matchroomsport's professional WPC, recently held in Far East Asia), only years 1990-92 & 1997 are TRUE 9-ball World Championships.
At 1998, when Takahashi won, there were many of the top pros, but still many missing also.
At 1999, as Matchroomsport came, there were still also WPA WC, but it was over shadowed badly by the WPC held by Matchroomsports. Luckily, WPA and Matchroom united later..
B4 year 1990, I don't know much about. Just saw some clip where Nick beat Grady in some sort of a WC final, probably 1988.
Can Terry or someone enlighten a little bit about the Championships from the 80's? I would be happy if so. This is bit off topic, but at least my post cleared something about Oliver's WC at -95, which IMHO is not a REAL WC then again.. :p

Hate that stuff, to be honest don't drink British Beer, Stella is the best (but that's not German ;)).

Mistake haha, I remember who they played in the final very well, 1966 was/is a divine year! Besides how can you compare your 3 world championship wins to our 1, was the field strong enough, were they open world cups?

Markus,
That was a pretty accurate post! I personally would still consider the all the World Champions TRUE champions because they DID win over the field they competed in and it's not really their fault if some of the tournaments were pared down due to political ranklings between orginizations.
Here is a list of the winners of every tournament that was billed as a World 9 Ball Championship from the 1980 starting point. (My list goes back to 1962 when Lassiter reigned)
1980-Jim Rempe Jimmy Reid
1981- Mike Sigel
1982-Nick Varner
1983-Buddy Hall Allen Hopkins & Ray Martin
1984-Earl Strickland Buddy Hall
1985-Mike Sigel
1986-Mike Sigel
1987-Mike Sigel
1988-Earl Strickland
1989-Nick Varner
1990-Earl Strickland
1991-Earl Strickland
1992-Johnny Archer
1993-Fong Pang Chao Johnny Archer
1994-Earl Strickland Takeshi Okumura
1995-Oliver Ortmann Johnny Archer
1996-Ralf Souquet Rudolpho Luat
1997-Johnny Archer
1998-Kunihiko Takahashi
1999-Nick Varner Efren Reyes
2000-Fong Pang Chao
2001-Mike Immonen
2002-Earl Strickland
2003-Thorsten Hohmann
2004-Alex Pagulayan
2005-Chi-Ching Wu
2006-Ronnie Alcano
2007-?????????

Keep in mind that, like modern day boxing, at times pool had several competing orginizations or promoters that billed their tournament as a "World Championship". Some had stronger fields than others, but nonetheless, they were strong fields.

Also keep in mind that the modern majors attract far more players than in the past. In some "World Champoionships" of the past, you were lucky to have a field of 32 players. I'm talking mainly about the 1970's. Today, qualifiers limit the WPC field to 128. The U.S. Open, the Derby City Classic and the Japan Open all boast huge (225+) fields.
