Well, this is painful and embarrasing.

I was using my router table yesterday working on building a poker table for the house. I was using feather boards and everything was going smoothly until one board slipped somehow and shot off the router table accross the room. That caused my hand to slip directly into the router bit.

I lost the tip of my index finger and suffered a sever cut to th tip of my pointer finger. 3 hours in the emergency room and an appointment with the hand surgeon on Monday. looks like I am out of commission for a few weeks. On the plus side, the hydrocodone rocks. I have very little pain right now.

I just wanted to share/vent with those of you that I know can relate.

Typing one handed for now!

Oh man, that sucks. Very sorry hear about your accident. It sounds like it could have been worse, you could have had a totally mangled couple of fingers. Heal quickly.

Hope you get better soon and have no lingering damage. Put my thumb into a kerf cutter a couple years back, lost some feeling there.

Vics don't do much for me, I'm onto Percs. They help some, but I would rather be uninjured.....couldn't even sleep last night..

Hi,

Turn this experience into a positive life's event. Make this injury the lesson that precludes you from ever having another. Us humans learn from our mistakes.

Hope you get better soon.

Bye the way, thanks for not posting any bloody pics.

Best of Luck

At least it wasnt worse than it was. As Rick said turn it into a positive, I accidentally touched my thumb to a 6 wing carbide cutter, got very lucky but I also learned where not to reach for something when cutting.

Speedy recovery to you sir !!

I think a lot of people that post here are typing with one hand...........

Sorry to hear about the incident.
For some reason, too many trades people get cut and sliced off fingers.
Sometimes it is because a something has not been made to push/guide the material through. Other times it is a distraction , as they turn around/look away, the hand/ fingers enter the area of no return.
But people have to realise that machinery does not care what it cuts.Only you do.
It takes time to make things to keep fingers safe. Often the pusher/guide can take more time to make than the item being cut/worked on.
For me,I try to be safe as possible and have quite a few funny shaped bits of wood etc to push guide with.
My favoutite is a block with two prongs that go to the full length of the saw blade. That way the wood is pushed through from both sides until it has cleared all of the blade.I have a similar but shorter one for use with bands saws.
Just some more ideas to help against the odds.

I was using a grinding wheel to sharpen a small tool. I had a glove on, because the tool was getting hot. The glove caught in the wheel & sucked my hand in. it ground my whole fingernail off, 1/2 way through the bone. I looked down & the nail was gone & the bone was ground flat. The blood & the pain came next. Not a pretty picture...JER

a quick pic of the xray. I won't show the bloody fingers.

Get better soon and thanks for making me feel like I'm not the only guy who does stupid stuff and is lucky enough to only get a good lesson...

I think you should post the bloody pics just to remind people that the risk is ever present. One lapse of judgement or a loss of focus for a split second can result in serious injury. These machines are not toys and deserve respect.
