Oxymoron - Invitational World Championship

This is getting nasty, so I'll post another question?

Randy, are you the one who the made list of invitees?

( I hope this isn't one of those tournaments where you have to make all of your balls IN A ROW )

Absolutely - And FIFA is putting up the 6.4 MILLION DOLLAR prize fund for the Women's World Cup (World Championships) this year. The winning team takes home one million.

In Pool any PROMOTER can BUY themselves a "World Championship". They can change the rules, change the game, invite whom they wish, and basically do just about whatever they like as long as they pay the sanctioning fee from the WPA. Matchroom has done it. Every year they change something from the break to the qualifying rules. Randy Goldwater has done it by staging a "World Championship" where some obviously unqualified players were invited and qualified players were made to play in satellite events in order to try for a berth.

The WPA is horribly understaffed. The sport of competitive billiards is about as fragmented as a sport can be.

Can anyone name another sport or game that has so many variations as billiards? And everyone claims to be the "governing body" (I hate that term).

It is no wonder then that we get so much debate over these events when the creation of them is mired in a non-transparent and political swamp.

Track and Field?

I don't think that even Track and Field has so many different variations and organizations as pool and billiards.

One thing is for sure though, when the runners show up at events the rules are the same as are the qualifications. A World Championship title in Track and Field events is always contested for by participants who earned their spot and weren't handpicked.

It would seem to me that without consensus a Champion is just a Winner. The does not seem to be any consensus in pool, just tournaments.

I'm beginning to wonder if this will ever end. I can understand some of the criticism about the 14.1 Championship but please, can't we give it a chance to grow into the event we all feel it could be? Have some patience, I'm sure amongst all the posts here there will be some ideas that could be used to improve the event in future years. Nothing starts perfectly, it takes time to iron out the wrinkles.

Bomber is right, the FIFA World Cup is probably the only true WC if you want it to be open to all nations. I would love to see pool have that kind of opportunity, no matter which format it is.

Come on people, we all love our game. We wouldn't be here if we didn't, so instead of the arguing & general nastiness that has been so prevalent here lately can't we try to be more productive? Maybe we can achieve something we can all be proud of in the future.

Thanks for the reply.

To those who don't agree with Randy, Are there enough good quality Straight Pool tournaments in the USA that can be used by BCA-UPA to determine the top Straight Pool players? If there are any, are those UPA tournaments? Remember BCA uses UPA ranking for WPC events. If there is no UPA ranking available then BCA will most likely use informal ranking based on "recent" performance.
