Palmer USA cues on ebay

So I will open the can of worms, is it correct to call these Palmer USA cues or should it mention that they are tributes made by Jacoby? I see where they call out the shafts are made by Jacoby but there is no other mention. It is also obvious that Palmer did not use Radial pins but all potential buyers might not be aware. Thoughts?

Although I was in the same boat in my opinion of Dean's practices as Tate, I was coming here to post something similar, after looking at the listing and seeing what you pointed out.

I'd personally say a palmer tribute design, made by the good folks at Jacoby.

I just noticed these. This is a replica/recreation line of cues privately commissioned and made by Jacoby. They're on ebay.

I think it's an interesting project. The quality looks great. Personally I would like to see a model "M" mated with a carbon fiber shaft. I think that would look pretty cool.

Well I know what you mean and I would have rather seen that myself. The Jacoby name is certainly a good one and having the advertising value wouldn't hurt. This way it leaves a buyer wondering, that's why I emailed her and she explained the whole thing.

I'm sure this is a very limited run. The seller readily and quickly told me how the project came about, no secret there. Rather than duplicate the old Palmer logo, I would rather see it say Palmer by Jacoby or something like that myself. Just to be clear, Jacoby was hired to make the cues. I don't know if Jacoby applied the logo, but if I had to guess, it would be no. My understanding is the person who commissioned the cues owns the legal right to the Palmer USA name, FYI.

The price point might be a deterrent, but if somebody like the J design, these seem to be a quality cue.

Oh my gosh, I hope she just misspelled the name. Her name is Edie Wheat *, FYI

* (just kidding),,,her name is Katelyn and she seems very nice and forthright.

Well then
I would assume there is no trademark infringement here as this Jacoby PALMER name looks an awful lot like the 1990s Palmer Custom Cue logo - so is Gene Balner's son involved in this somehow? if not, how would one get the legal right to the Palmer name on pool cues that looks so much like Palmer cues that are still in the marketplace - some on eBay as NOS- being sold for the first time.

I would imagine someone from the Gene Balner (original Palmer cues) family has given a license or release for the name being imprinted in such a fashion on the cue butt plate. the cue looks real nice, but doubt they will sell many at the eBay asking price of around $1700. - not right now anyhow.

Sounds like a damn con going on, I say.

All y'all pool cue detectives better swarm over there and thoroughly investigate the matter.

It's downright serious.

What if somebody was sitting around all broke and salivating over getting a "Palmer" and spent their whole stimulus check on it before they knew?

Then they would run out of Top Ramen and lose money on the cue, too.

The subject of these Palmer USA cues was discussed in the Palmer Group on Facebook when they first appeared over a year ago at Derby City. It is well known that Palmer sold the name after they ceased operations. A fellow by the name of Billy Purcell claims to own those rights and it is he who has had these cues made by Jacoby.

Whatever opinion one may have about them, there is nothing underhanded nor illegal about them being sold under the Palmer name.

In my opinion, nicer Palmer tributes have been made, (Jensen, Rauenzahn, James White, PFD Studios/Paul and Ellen Drexler, and others) most using the Model J as their basis, although a few Model 20 copies/tributes are out there as well. This is not a criticism of Jacoby as they run a fine shop and produce first class work. In this case, they produced what they were contracted to build.

The nice aspect of these cues is that to anyone even slightly familiar with Palmers from Elizabeth, NJ, they are not originals.

Agreed Jay. The story I got was Palmer did not sell the name. When Palmer liquidated Blatt in New York bought the remaining inventory and the name was abandoned. It was adopted without permission by a company in Taiwan in the 1990's and Fred Smith bought the rights to the USA import. Then he passed away a few years ago and Billy Purcell bought the remaining stock and apparently any rights.

Anyway, that's what I pieced together long ago after asking Peter and the gentleman in Las Vegas.

I have 3 of the Taiwan made Palmer cues. They are very well made and play well with
a few mods.
They were sold on ebay and in vegas for $49 - $119. extra shafts were $30 each.
I showed one to Timmy Scruggs a few years before he passed. He said the material
in the butt would cost him over $120. I cut the tips off immediately and put on triangles.
They play well.

Billy is a great guy. I have known him since the 80s. I asked him why he didn't make the joint like the old Palmers. He said he wanted the look of the old Palmers but he wanted them to play great like a more modern cue and felt the Radial pin was the better hit. He feels the new Palmers represent the best of both eras.

Glad to hear that all of this is legit, then. I see no problem with the cue being made under these proper authorities. It does look very nice and probably plays well too. I would agree with other comments that the price may be too steep at $1750, I would want a nice original, not a copy.

I like the Palmers with the windows and big silver rings and white buttcaps. All the things that are not correct to like (for the cue snobs on this site). Like this one: I might pay some money for a reproduction of that one, but not 1750 $, and not with a stupid radial pin. Metal joint with a radial pin looks just stupid and wrong to me. Original joint type, please.
