Say you wanted to build a full splice cue with some super figured birdseye in the forearm. Would coring and plugging the first few inches of the forearm be a good method to stabilize the birdseye? when you do this, i'm guessing the plug does not bottom out in the hole, right? does this mean the area under the plug is hollow, creating a weak spot?

I core the front end and the back end of all the fullsplice cues that I build. I just make sure that I get them to bottom out. I also cut glue reliefs in the core that I am using so that all the air pushes out and there is no voids.
 
If your going to core it....your tolerances should be tight enough that a very minute amout of epoxy should fill any voids.
Just curious why you would think it would be weak?
 
Not a big fan of partial cores. At least in the nose of the cue. Epoxy is great, but not much birdseye left if you do a .75 core. Just ball parking some numbers, at 5 inches from the joint approximately cue diameter .92 minus .750 core leaves you with a wall thickness of .085. I think of it this way, take two .750 dowels and butt glue them together, then slip a .085 thick tube of maple over the joint. Just my take on it. Personal experience is that good birdseyes is pretty stable. Why not core the whole front before you do the full slice. To bad Schmelke doesn't offer that as an option.
 
it kinda goes without saying everything should bottom out and be as close as possible. be it a pin a tenon or a core. i learned a neat trick at barry shop last week about the pin in the a joint.

personally i cue everything a little long and fit and cut until its perfect. i know it takes longer but im fine with that.

nothing in cuemaling is quick. esp if its right

good point.i think Birdseye gets a bad wrap and unless the piece has given you a reason to think it will be a problem i would leave it alone.Birdseye is stronger and plays better than people give it credit.some of it i wouldn't use uncored,maybe with a huge amount of very large eyes or if it just looked weak,but for the most part i don't core Birdseye.
 
I had a Richard Black cue once and a friend of mine dropped it on a hardwood floor and the Birdseye prong shattered like a piece of glass. It might be overkill but I core both Birdseye and Curly.
