Hi all,

I recently picked up a cue made by Dale Patten. Dale has been in the business for a long time and used to sell a line of cues that was endorsed by his brother in law, Ritchie Florence.

The cue was purchased from Dale by the guy I bought it from in 1978. It has a solid ivory joint and rolls straight as an arrow. It even has a set of old yellow Bakelite JP's for the butt and original two shafts (the third shaft is by Patten, too, but was made later on). The cue has that nice, old school feel and hit to it. Solid as a rock with a great "ping" sound.

My first question is that Dale used to use a lot of Szam and Spain blanks. I don't recognize these as either, but wanted to throw it out for your opinions. The colors are a mahogany brown, orange, light orange (or maybe yellow), and natural.

Next question is that the cue is real dirty and alot of the finish has worn thin or off, which has allowed chalk blueing to creep in on the butt around the bottom of the points. There are several player's dings, but nothing horrible. I know with a lot of the big names, you shouldn't refinish the cue unless there is damage, etc. I tried to buy a Patten from Raist Chin before he passed away. He had Proficient refinish his and it looked great, but he felt it hurt the value a little. The guy I bought this cue from took it in to Kerry Zeiler to have refinished, but Kerry wouldn't do it because he felt it would hurt the value.

I would like to get some opinions from you guys. What ya think?

Thanks,

Steve

Was that the one off ebay just recently? If so it was on my watched list. Nice pickup.

Classic looking cue, Steve. Too bad it doesn't have a piloted steel joint!!! ;)

I've seen a couple Patten cues over the last two years...but I know less than approximately nothing about 'em....

Talk to ya soon, sir.

blank is neither szamboti, or spain. but nice cue. patten got blanks from other's also. points to wide between at wrap.

Thanks for all your input! I went ahead and sent the cue in to get her cleaned up yesterday. I'll post up some pics when I get it back. Bryan Mordt is going to do the refinish. It's a player and I think it needs a new clearcoat to keep out the elements. One thing to have blueing on your shafts, but it just shouldn't be on the forearm :D ...

Steve,

I agree that the blank is not a Szamboti or Spain, but a very nice one nonetheless.

I had a Patten Merry Widow that I got from Dale back in the late 90's. I spoke with him many times, and he was a great guy. He talked as much about making custom car parts as he did cues, but those were some great conversations. As far as playability goes, I will tell you this - That Patten is the ONE cue I regret selling, and is the standard by which all other stainless steel jointed cues are measured. Absolutely amazing player.

Finally (and it seems you've already made this decision), if you are going to keep and play with the cue, I would recommend a refinish. Dale used a Varnish finish (at least he did on my cue), and it wasn't as durable as the modern stuff most cuemakers use today. Not only that, but the cue should be whiter when it returns, as the varnish did tend to yellow with time.

Either way, enjoy your new cue!
