Paul Mottey Cue For Sale

This is an original 1985 Paul Mottey custom built cue.

Everyone likes to know a little history of the stick that they are buying. This cue was designed and used by Cary Cook of Mentor OH. He was an avid pool player and one of the best players in the Cleveland area. He helped form a Straight/9 Ball league over 30 years ago in Wickliffe, OH with many of the best players in the area playing in it. It's still going strong to this day. He also authored a book on bank shots called - Take The “Diamonds” To The Bank. In his younger days he was a golf professional by day and a pool player by night. In 1985, he decided he wanted a cue made to his specifications and have a look that no one else had or ever will have. Being a superior artist also, he drew many different designs and came up with a one-of-a-kind spectacular looking pool cue. Knowing Paul Mottey was one of the best cue makers of that era, he took his designs and specs to Paul’s shop in Pittsburg PA. and had him create this very unique cue. The pictures don’t do this stick justice. It’s a beautiful piece of pool history.

Now, about the stick. It comes with 4 shafts, all 4 different specs for different games and cloth, all made by Mottey. No one needs 4 shafts that are all the same. Here are some of the specs:

16.2 oz butt

1st shaft is 3.5 oz with a 12.85 mm tip

2nd shaft is 3.5 oz with a 12.65 mm tip

3rd shaft is 3.9 oz with a 12.50 mm tip

4th shaft is 3.7 oz with a 12.33 mm tip

Overall length of the stick is 59 inches

5/16x14 stainless steel piloted joint

Multiple mother of pearl inserts

I believe 2 shafts have ivory ferrules

Irish linen wrap

$6500. USA only please. I would be open to legitimate offers.

Thanks ddawg. It is a beautiful stick. It looks better in person. It hits solid. It plays well. Mottey made nice sticks, too bad he doesn't make them anymore. This one was made in 1985. If you're interested in buying it I'm open to legitimate offers.

I don't seem to be getting anyone interested in a collectors cue. I even added that I would entertain any reasonable offers. This leads me to believe that I might be on the wrong website. I think I'll remove this soon and find another sight that maybe has some higher end collectors. If any one has any ideas on other websites that might work for me please let me know. Thanks.
There are serious collectors who regularly patrol this site so that's not the problem. The gentleman who originally designed and ordered this cue from Paul is not well known enough to have a meaningful impact on the value of the cue unless a personal friend of his or a family member wanted it for nostalgic reasons.

Another obstacle for potential buyers is that there are no full shafts. Cary Cook apparently liked skinny shafts, however, the majority of buyers would want fuller shafts whether to play with it or collecting (it's an investment).

It's a cool looking cue and Motteys have a loyal following with buyers always in the mix. The pricing on this cue, however, is so far above realistic value that I'm afraid this is why you haven't been getting any interest. Just too unrealistic of a starting point.

There is a Mottey specific FB group where you could also list it but at this price I'm confident that you will run into the same lack of response.

FTR, not trying to knock your sale thread at all, just trying to provide some helpful input.

Seems like your price point maybe leaning towards a sentimental value rather than what the market value is right now. There is no doubt that Paul built good cues, maybe using Facebook marketplace you'll find a Mottey nut that would make you a "reasonable offer". Do consider that you maybe a little out of the ballpark with the figure you are asking. Even the George case I believe is priced 2 to 3x's higher.
That cue isn't for everyone, you're gonna have to be patient and wait around till the right buyer comes along.

Well said. No one is bashing, just being truthful. Paul made phenomenal cues. No matter who made the cue if you're wanting to ask for a higher price research has to done. Questions has to be asked. Find the Mottey group on FB. Due the diligence there. Paul is still available. If you think you have a Bushka there's people with a whole lot of knowledge on that particular subject. I've seen that first hand. The case is nice but it is listed for more than 3x value. Again research will tell you that. Keep it posted on AZ you never know. Good luck with your sale. It is a beautiful cue. First one I've seen in that style.

Phenomenal and ultra unique cue.

I also believe you need some guidance on your price point, but it is yours and you can try and get whatever you want for it.

I've read a lot of comments on this cue. Some good, some not so good. If anyone has a realistic idea of the true value of the cue and case, I'd sure appreciate knowing it. Please tell me the value and how you arrived at that number so I can sell this and get it to a good home that would appreciate it. Thanks for your knowledge and help.
Post the cue on the main forum and ask the value as has been stated here several times. You'll get way more traction and nobody is going to be negative because you're asking a question and not putting a price in the equation.
