pause on back stroke

its a good thing,

Always a CONTROLLED back stroke....just like a golfer

Then a slight pause (pause as long as you like it can be quick or long like buddy hall)

the finish the stroke with the hand hitting the chest.

SET PAUSE FINISH

The pause at the end of the backstroke allows for a more smooth transition between two very opposite actions.

We all do it...some of us use it.

Be consistent and balanced with your pause. Don't pause too long or your confidence will drop with each millisecond :P

My dog's paws during a back stroke

what do u guys think of this?

What's with the question about her paws when I give her a back stroke? Her paws are on the floor; and have to be, for me to pet and stroke her back...

:D

j/k,

Well i'm not sure if you mean pause on the last stroke after you pull it back, or if you just mean pause on the last stroke before you pull it back but, definitely a good thing if you mean pause before you bring it back! Look at what Shane does, he typically pauses right before his last stroke for a good 2-3 seconds and then follows through like a monster. You don't get a much more powerful and straight stroke than that imho.

Both are important. There are 3 stops in every good pool stroke.

Wow!!

All pool players have to make a transition. The good players seem to do it very well. It's not a matter of time BUT a matter of timing.....SPF=randyg

Randy,

In all seriousness, I don't think anyone has ever described the transition better.

If randyg remembers, I had no discernable transition. Even though your arm can only move in one direction at a time (provided your arm is not broken), I was rushing the transition to hit the ball as fast as I could. Now I think I have a very defined pause and it works well for me. I seem to be more consistent.

I had to laugh at the golf reference. You know I can count and visualize the number of good shots I've had on one hand. Every one of those shots was diliberate and felt like I was moving in slow motion. You would think I would learn from those rare shots. :)

Here again, thanks to randyg and SPF, my game is moving forward again.

Funny how something so seemingly insignificant can have such a huge impact on your game

Ever watch Jamie Farrel play ?

its a good thing,

SET PAUSE FINISH

Jamie hits em pretty sporty sometimes but does the SET PAUSE FINISH thing with absolutely no warm up stroke whats so ever..Just locks in pauses till he feels it then pulls the trigger...damndest thing you ever seen..lol

its very very important to have a pause, it will give you a smooth delivery of the cue and your timing of the ball will improve.

you need to break the backstroke down, from the follow through.

exactly how i play houmatroy,

its what you feel comfortable with.

A pause at the back of the last stroke (just before the shot stroke) helps me to gather my focus for executing the shot. It's particularly helpful for speed control.

I don't know, I think all you guys and the pros have it all wrong. It should be a rapid jerky movement back and forth, then jump up as you swing it at the cue ball. I promise, that's the way it should be done:grin-devilish:

I wish everyone I played with knew this...

Pete

Be careful what you wish for

Be careful what you wish for -- you may end-up playing Ismael "Morro" Paez, and you don't have to like it!

I do it to help me accelerate through the stroke. If I am not shooting well 9 times out of 10 I am rushing my stroke and decelerating to adjust the speed.
